So, in addition to checking/replacing the batteries in your smoke detectors at clock-change time, tend to your fireplace.

If you have a remote control gas fireplace (the controller is usually made by SkyTech) then you have a reciever/selector that sits under the fire box where the pilot igniter and gas shut-off is. That box has the slide switch that lets you select on/remote/off.

That box also has four AA batteries in it. Or, if you have my luck, four exploded AA batteries.

Any advice on removing the corosion from the contacts? Or is it time to Cowboy Up and order a new unit?

    Thanks for any help.

Use baking soda and water to make a paste and spread it over the tray. brush it around with an old toothbrush to absorb the battery acid and wipe up with paper towel or sponge. then use sandpaper, emery board to scratch the rust off and blow out the debris. The baking soda neutralizes the battery acid which you don't want to stay in there. good luck.

Some people use Cola products and I guess they would work also, but then you have to wash away the sticky cola stuff.

Kaos---any idea how to re-learn the box and the remote? The battery popped out of my remote and now it won't turn on the fireplace. I'm tired of flipping it on by hand--and the Lennox website was useless.

No clue. I have a dumb SkyTech remote, not a Lennox.

Related question... our pilot light keeps going out, even when it's not windy outside. It'll be fine for a few days, then gone. We re-light it. Then we'll be using it and it will stop without us turning it off, pilot light is off. Or, we'll turn it on, use it, turn it off, then next time we go to turn it on again we see the pilot light is out (which of course we don't notice until we are pointing the remote at it trying to turn it on!)

    Any thoughts?

sharse, it is probably dirty and is not able to vent properly. try cleaning the screen above the flame.

    Question:

do you all leave the pilot burning year round? If not, how do you cut it off?

I'm assuming you tried the learn button on the box. Just wondering before we spend all night trying to figure it out.

We turn off the pilot light in the warmer months when we're not using the fireplace. We can access the pilot light on/off knob by opening the bottom of the fireplace screen.

I just replaced mine... $99.00 self installed. The new remote looks like an iPhone!

i tried "learn"--but it didn't do jack. I emailed the company and they told me to try replacing the batteries in the remote and the unit under the fireplace...and standing 5 feet away and clicking the ON button. I didn't have any AA at the time---so i still haven't tried it. i'll let ya know!
