Trust me when I say we pay more than our fair share of taxes. The problem is the misuse and mismanagement of those funds. Just blindly giving them more money is the worst possible solution as it only promotes more fiscal irresponsibility.

There's no reason for elected officials to earn as much as they do. There's no reason they warrant the exhorbitant security fees to protecte them, they're just not that important. We shouldn't be purchasing $50 hammers. Unproductive government employees should be easier to terminate. The "use or lose" budgeting process has never served a purpose. The list goes on and on, the money is already there.

Actually, the whole area was once known as Farmwell (thus the subdivision called Farmwell Hunt, as well as the road). However, in the late 1800 or so, an ash tree was hit by lightning and burned for over two weeks.

Thus the village of Farmwell was renamed Ashburn, and has been known by that name for most of the 20th Century. The original Post Office from the 40's & 50's is located on Ashburn Road across from Ashburn Presbyterian Church (founded in 1875, original sanctuary built in 1876), and was the local Domino's Pizza location until it moved to the new Giant shopping center a few years ago. That building will be demolished in a few months or so to make room for a medical office building.

Not that this is worthy of any dispute, even an academic one, but while it obvious that the area along Ashburn Road between what is now Farmwell Road and Route 7 (which runs through old Ashburn) would have been called Farmwell or Ashburn, my limited research indicates that there were, at least for non-postal purposes, areas considered as "Ryan" and "Waxpool" further south and west of old Ashburn. On a couple small old maps I have seen, there are express designations for "Ryan" (basically where the old houses along "old" Ryan road are, which now dead-ends into the Greenway), as well as "Waxpool" in the area behind Steam Valley Animal Hospital and the old baseball field. It would certainly be consistent for those hamlets to have been called that, more or less, since the roads leading to them are so named. My guess is that when the post office was established in this area, Ashburn was chosen because it was the largest hamlet and along the RR line. The PO designation then just expanded to cover the whole area.

Perhaps it is time for a Local History forum on here?

I'll check with one of our older members at Ashburn Presbyterian, Ruth Boone Judd ... she's somewhere in her 80's and taught in Loudoun Schools in the 50's & 60's ... on the area designations. FWIW .. she had the current Loudoun Superintendant in both her public school and Sunday school classrooms.

I'll also check with Walt & Bootie Eamich, both long time residents of Ashburn (and members of APC), on some of the designations.
