Hello... it's me again. :blahblah: We've decided we're not going to fly in February for a few reasons, and would like instead to find a nice romantic place to go without the munchkins. I was looking forward to going to the Greenbrier (I've been there, hubby has not) but it looks like so many things are "closed for the season" and due to open in the spring that I'm not sure that is where I want to head after all.

So... to pose this question to you all again... where would you go for a few days with your spouse/significant other in late February? Romantic getaway within driving distance of 4 hours, give or take.

    Thanks!

I was just online looking at The Homestead. Looks a lot like the Greenbrier -- but they have more things open in Feb!!

Would have mentioned this also but it will probably be tough to get in at this point for February.

Unless you book MONTHS in advance it is difficult to get a reservation.

You could check also out Annapoils. Plenty of B&B's and a quaint city atmosphere.

I have always loved the Inn at Perry Cabin in St. Michaels. Never been in the winter but I hear they have a great spa that is now open.

    Spa? Did someone say "spa"

The reviews on tripadvisor.com are NOT favorable to the Homestead. Bah.

Off to check out St. Michaels...

We went to The Homestead in March of 2002--a lot was still open. I played a round of golf, and although the greens were basically frozen I had the course pretty much to myself. We loved it and would not hesitate to go back in the winter.

Looking for something really within driving distance? Try Lansdowne Resort. The hotel has a few restaurants and amenities (spa, pool, etc.). You can also eat at the new clubhouse restaurants so you won't have to eat at a single place. Since you don't have to leave the resort, you won't feel like you are just miles away from home. Best of all, since you are just a few miles away, you don't need to plan around traffic or have the traffic and return drive ruin your relaxation.

Homestead has a very similar feel to that at the Greenbriar. If you liked the Greenbriar, my guess is you'll like the Homestead.

Their weekend packages can include meals at the hotel, which I recommend. Not many restaurants around the Homestead. Downtown there is a few but we really found no reason to go there other than to lounge and shop.

Some things not to miss things, from our perspective, the Jefferson baths (go more than once), the indoor swimming pool, and sign up for the nature hike. The guide is fantastic. He's been doing it for years. They have a tea service in the afternoon which is pretty cool, relaxing.

They also have skiing and ice skating. I think that is a little hit or miss, but it's been years since I went there to ski.

The place does seem to emphasize golf, it has a beautiful course on site. We're not golfers so don't know much about that.

If you're looking for a nice drive. We have shot down there the quickest way just to get there for the weekend, then left noon or so on Sunday then took backroads home. I think the route is 11 but not sure. It parallels 81.

Website is very informative, and customer service is outstanding.

I don't golf (ewww!) - still found the place stunning, great food, too.

Here's my idea---go downtown. You can be there in 40 minutes, there's TONS of adult oriented things to do, and stay somewhere posh like Hotel Rouge. Party like rock stars!

I second vote for Nemocolin. Falling Water is awesome. Kentcuk Nob (another FLW house) is about 30 mins away and is neat too.

I would also vote for Hotel Rouge downtown. We've talked about that but haven't done it yet.

I give a thumbs down for Landsdown. We did a weekend there this August on a full package given as a gift. The spa was nice but there was nothing to do. We've done a lot of the wineries, etc and really just wanted to stay at the hotel and relax. I didn't think it was worth the price (around $800).

FWIW, we had a great time at Greenbriar in February a while back: spa, great food, breakfast in bed, falconry, and a tour of the bunker.
