We now have two flyers from two different scout troops selling mulch. Troops 970 and 1154. Does anyone know which one actually represents scouts from Broadlands?

Actually, they both do ... each one is sponsored by a different church or organization, and they cover all areas of Ashburn. FWIW ... if you look at March's newsletter (I got mine today), they both have ads, placed on the same page ...

I'm having macabre thoughts of "scout mulch"..... good fertilizer, but wouldn't want the cub scout yellow and blue in the beds....

Troop 1158 is an Ashburn boyscout troop, with leadership by the boys themselves....meaning they plan and advertise their activities, including the fundraisers. They meet at a church in Old Ashburn, and the troop has about 30 boys who are residents of Ashburn. One family moved to Purcellville, but are still active in the troop.

Troop 970 is a much larger troop, with well over 100 scouts. They meet at Sterling United Methodist Church, in Sterling Park. They have scouts from Purcellville to Great Falls, including several Ashburn families, and there is an emphasis on parent involvement in the troop.

Both troops have excellent, albeit very different programs and philosophies. All profits from the mulch sales go directly to the troops themselves (vs. a portion going to the National Council, as in popcorn sales) to support major expenditures. Usually, these are the camping trips the boys go on. I can't speak for troop 970, but in 1158, the boys have individual accounts, and the money they earn by participating in the mulch sale, may be used for any of their scout expenses (uniforms, books, equipment, camp fees, etc.)

Thank you for asking the question! And thank you for your support!!

P.S. It is recruiting season. Call me at 703-729-7320 if you have a son entering 6th grade next year, who would be interested in attending a troop event!

Sorry for the confusion - I was referring to the two mulch ads in the March Broadlands newsletter, for Ashburn troop 1158 and Sterling based troop 970.

There are several boy scout troops in Ashburn - 4 to be exact. They are 1158, 1154, 997, and 760. In addition, the surrounding towns have troops, like 970, that kids from Ashburn have chosen to join. The nice thing is the boys have several troops to choose from, and each has a unique program. The confusing thing, is they all sell mulch!

These are a list of the Goose Creek District troops and their communities, per a publication last year on the district website:

    163 Purcellville
    572 Potomac Falls
    711 Purcellville
    760 Ashburn
    761 Sterling
    950 Potomac Falls
    956 Potomac Falls
    961 Hillsboro
    962 Lovettsville
    966 Sterling
    968 Sterling
    969 Hamilton
    970 Sterling
    982 Leesburg
    997 Ashburn
    998 Leesburg
    1154 Ashburn
    1158 Ashburn
    1159 Leesburg
    1430 South Riding
    1550 Leesburg
    1576 Sterling
    1910 Lucketts

    Hope that helps! DEB

970 Troop has a significant number of the members from Ashburn. At least 20 members are from Ashburn (my unofficial recollection)
