They have these signs about every quarter mile on Ashburn Village. We travel over there often to go to Dairy Queen, Ruby Tuesdays, etc and I have to admit, I hardly ever see speeders (or police cars for that matter).

Every time I see those signs I look down to see how far over 35 I'm going. It's a sharp contrast to here in the Broadlands where the back of my townhouse is to Claiborne (and the school speed zone) and I can sit on my deck and watch the motorcyles blast by doing 80 and the minivans doing 55.

I've also heard, although we're not sure, that the extra $200 goes to the HOA.

What is everyones thoughts on getting signs like these in the Broadlands? Does anyone know how Ashburn Village got them?

    John

I think its a great idea. Cars travel much faster on Claiborne than on Ashburn Village Pkwy. Both roads are the major north-south arterial of a planned community. A van sped by me on Ashburn Village Pkwy Saturday and was promptly pulled over by a cop. I have noticed how well people mind the speed limit in Ashburn Village. When they ever finish Wyndridge to 702 then traffic will only increase on Claiborne. Perhaps we could use the money collected from speeders to buy us a light at Waxpool and Claiborne.

We need those speed cameras they areputting up in the NW. That would catch the drag racers too.

This is a copy from a post on the Speeding on Vestals Gap thread (with some edits relevant to this thread):

So the question is, how do/can/should we get this study done? Cliff, any thoughts?

The idea was brought up before and Cliff suggested getting a petition signed and presented to the Broadlands B of D. Then, working with Steve Snow, we could possibly get VDOT to agree to install the signs.

And I would assume then that the extra $200 goes to the county/state/etc and *not* the HOA, correct?

I spoke to Rick Clements, the Ashburn Village HOA president about this. He said it is a fairly lengthy process, but can be done.
The Broad Run Supervisor pushed the issue with the sheriff's office and VDOT to get it through.
The HOA does not get the money.
Ashburn Village has had problems with people vandalizing the signs and there are some that oppose it, but he feels it has had an overall positive effect.
I'm not convinced it is the way to go. I personally would rather wait until the two lights get installed and then see if there is still a problem.

Is there any update on the vandals that repeatedly stole the Broadlands letters? Will they ever be replaced?

The Broadlands letters were stolen? Why would anyone waste their time stealing the letters? What are they going to do with them?

I was wondering what happened to the letters.

BelindaTH, they usually get stolen within 3 months of being replaced... This has been going on for the last 2 years now...

I'm hoping that since it's taking so long to replace this time, that Van Metre is looking into replacing them with a 'single' unit, so that individuals letters can't be removed... If whoever keeps stealing them wants to do it again, they would have to steal the whole thing. Would be kind of hard for them to look 'inconspicuous' running down Claiborne with a 12 foot sign :D

The sign problem isn't about 'what to do with them' its 'just to do it' probably. My parent's community has a one piece sign (engraved wood) that gets destroyed every time they replace it. They've even tried burning it (leaving large black score marks).

Honestly the broadlands sign suprises me if its the one up on claibourne.. pretty lit and high traffic area..

As much as people whine in the accident thread about their kids.. this is an example of not knowing where your kids are.. because something like this would have to happen VERY late at night.

Speeding signs will do nothing to help combat speeding IMO. There is one thing that does.. enforcement. You put a cop on a street and if you see him, you'll drive slow on that road for a few weeks after.

Of course, getting enforcement at will is not an option.
