Has the HOA ever thought about building a sports pavillion like the one in the Village? I know my family would love a place that our girls could go during the winter to shoot hoops and I bet there are a lot of families who now own gym memberships who would rather have one in the neighborhood?

Dream on... dream on..... dream until your dreams come, oops got side tracked. I seriously doubt there has been land set aside to do something like that. I know I would pay higher fees to have one here too, nice in the winter time. However, I don't think it is as possible at this point.

if you talk to people about the other ones.. its not that great of an idea in all regards. sizing it for the community is a big challenge. Basically one facility for everyone leads to crowding and lack of competition to innovate.

Would be nice if ida lee was closer, but all said and done, having private options are probably better in the long run anyways.

Well, that's too bad. Looks like the YMCA fell through.....what will happen to that land?

Not to mention, some idiot kids took a knife to the cocoon one night at the Pavilion, costing thousands in damage.

That Pavilion was installed by the developer, primarily as in inducement for people to move out here to the sticks. There really wasn't anything out here, and that provided some recreation.

The land is still slated to be a county owned community recreation facility. I have contacted Scott York, Lori Waters and Steve Snow's office to get the money to build it on a bond referendum. Unfortunately, it will probably be several years before this happens.

But of course South Riding's getting their county-funded rec center soon. (Sorry-couldn't resist).

Happy Thanksgiving to you too, Mdcrim.

Phase 1 has been bid, and does nothing but replace the existing Arcola community center space. It is on land proffered to Loudoun when they rezoned SR.

You should hear the screaming down here that that is ALL that is happening yet, when we NEED an complete indoor pool facility (hear the sarcasm?)

Seriously, something should be done to get the Broadlands center back moving up the queue--that seriously sucked when the Metro Y pulled the rug out from under the deal.

The Metro Y had it's part in the debacle. But I also blame the Board of Supervisors for losing focus. The public private partnership Y could of been worked out with a little tender loving care. Other things seemed to have taken precedent. It was a good match. Unfortunately no one wanted to care and feed the opportunity.

Hopefully we can get someone on the Board of Supervisors to start up the CIP and bond process to get a facility on track again. It's unfortunate but I think we've lost 5 to 10 years on the project.

I understand Cliff has contacted our representatives but so far has gotten no response.

That is unfortunate, because my kids will be grown in that time.

Remember - the motto of Loudoun County is: "We bide our time". Just keep that in mind.....explains a lot.

Instead of a nature center, which for the majority of our neighborhood serves no purpose, why didn't we build a small indoor gym space. How about the space next to the pool on Waxpool, what is that used for? I really think our teens could use an indoor gym space that could be used for a variety of purposes. We could even rent out that space for youth teams looking for gym space which the county does not have enough to meet the needs. I personally know of softball and basketball teams at the travel level which are without places to practice in the Winter. This space doesn't have to be as extensive as the Village has, just a sports court would do. Oh well, I know I am kicking a dead horse.

This horse has been dead and buried long before you moved here. All the amenities in Broadlands were built and proffered by the developers of Broadlands: Mobil Land Co. => Terrabrook + Van Metre => Van Metre.

The homeowners had no say, and since there's no land for much of anything else to build, we probably won't see anything else done by the HOA until we have some additional funds that we can set aside.

FWIW ... for what about what you'd pay extra for at the sports pavilion, you can get yourself a membership at a local gym. Probably is more up to date, with good staff.

Actually I don't personally need a workout type "gym" as I have one in my basement. I think what the neighborhood really needs is a place the kids can go, when it is cold outside, to let off some steam and get physical, shoot some hoops, play some volleyball, ect.

FWIW ... when I was young, and it was cold outside, we made do, and still shot hoops, played stickball, etc ... outside.

You also probably walked to school in two feet of snow uphill both ways and played baseball using a rag for a mitt. You must know my dad.

Well ... there was two feet of snow one year, and yes we walked to school about a mile and a half, uphill, but only one way, lugging a bookbag about the size of today's backpacks.

We really don't have a visitor's center any longer, its the Nature Center. About half of the building contains the HOA offices, the other half is used for environmental and nature education, and is the location for many of the HOA sponsored events, and summer classes.
