Anyone have any experience with stereo receivers/home theaters?

I have a relatively new Sony receiver w/Dolby Digital/Pro Logic/etc. and a 5.1 setup. I and am having a problem with the audio coming out of both of my front speakers. I can hear the audio coming through the speakers, but at a VERY low volume. If I turn up the volume on the receiver the volume through the speakers improves slightly, but is still very low (you can still only hear it if you put your ear right next to the speaker).

Audio coming through the center channel speaker is fine, and the subwoofer seems to be operating normally. I'm not sure about the rear speakers.

It loosely coincided with an instance in which I tripped the "overprotect" feature on my receiver -- I got a little bit overzealous listening to a new Linkin Park CD. Could I have blow a fuse in the receiver? Could I have damaged BOTH front speakers at the same time?

Any advice would be appreciated. I would prefer to troubleshoot this on my own before seeking professional advice. Thanks!

In the setup you can (should be able to) set the speakers to SMALL-MEDIUM-LARGE and you can also set the level of each individual speaker. Try that and see if it fixes it.

Another thing would be your soundfield setting. If you have it set to AFD or Studio sound, it'll try to pipe sound into 5.1...turn off your DSP setting on the reciever and it should push through as stereo rather than processing it into 5.1.

Also, what are you using as your source? If it's a DVD player, see if setting the audio output to PCM Audio rather than Dolby Digital works.

Thanks, brim. I check those ideas out.

BTW, the problem occurs no matter what my source is (video1, video2, CD, radio, etc.).

    Hey brim,

Just to follow-up, I checked the Sound Field settings and still couldn't get the speaker volume to go up.

So I unplugged my front speakers and connected my rear speakers in their place and . . . they worked like a charm. Seems I blew out both of my front speakers at the same time. I'm now shopping for a new pair. Lesson learned.

    Thanks for the help, brim!

SInce were on the subject of SONY recievers, I have a question. Looks like I can't get me right front to produce any sound. I have performed the reset, and nothing. The speaker works, I moved it over to the left and it works. I have a SONY STR-DE985. Any idea how much it might cost to get the one channel fixed, or working?

ALso, once I get it fixed,I always seem to have a problem getting the rear speakers loud enough, and the center channel never produces the conversations loud enough compared to the music. AND I have a SONY DVD player hooked up though COAX. When I switch to COAX mode, I get no sound at all out of the receiver, it says "UNLOCK" on the reciever panel.

I really think my kids screwed this thing up.

Gator, Sony receivers allow you to modify the 'volume' for each channel directly on the receiver. Make sure that the setting for that channel isn't set to the lowest setting...

I thought of that, and I did a "System Reset" by holding the Mode button and the power button. It clears everything out.
