Does anyone know of a place or phone number to get one of the big stork announcements that are put in the front yard to announce the birth of a baby?

per the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children:

"...the use of outdoor decorations to announce the infants arrival such as balloons, large floral wreaths, wooden storks, and other lawn ornaments are not recommended as the call attention to the presence of a new infant in the home..."

I agree ... lets all shutter our windows and doors, and keep the kids wrapped up in foam so they won't get hurt.

And people talk about government being the 'nanny state' :(

Nanny state? Party pooper? Didn't anyone ever tell you that you are free to take or leave advice, or is it easier to run your mouth (or fingers) than use your head and consider actions from a point of view you might not have otherwise considered.

And you have just as much a right to 'pooh pooh' my opinion, as I do your's and the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.

FWIW ... most infants are taken from homes by people who are 'known' in some way to the family.

I've heard this too, and I have to admit that I think these are cute but I didn't want one when my baby was born. I guess I didn't want to broadcast my baby's stats to every passerby. More of a privacy thing than a security one, but security was also a small part of it. I feel like Broadlands is pretty safe but there are lots of whackos out there...

They should only post them out front if there is something really special about the baby (25lbs, weird birthmark, slight resemblence to Mr. T, etc :)... otherwise you're not special and don't need a sign :)

Yes, I do know that I am free to take or leave advice that is given to me. I was just making my own statement. I'm free to do that, aren't I?

as someone from the small town where that man kidnapped and killed his last victim (Kimberly Leach), from a school where 2 of my cousins were in class, I don't take references to tht monster lightly.

I read the following on CL today:
Hello! I saw the post about someone who was advised to not get a stork because of baby's being kidnapped. I just wanted to let you guys know that I've been doing storks for years (both as my own business and, before that, working for someone else that has her own business). There has never been a reported case in this country of a baby being kidnapped from their home with a stork sign in the front yard. The hospitals are spreading urban legends and unneccesary fears. A stork sign is not any different then a car seat in your car, a stroller out front, a playset in the backyard, a high chair box on the curb for the trash truck... I just wanted to try to ease anyone's concerns over this urban legend. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns about this issue and I would be more than happy to discuss this in further detail if you would like. Thanks!
