Wow, everyone out there with pets, make sure your tick treatments are current. I took my dog for a walk out on the trails this morning and by the time we were finished she had 6 ticks on her feet. This was just from the grass immediately beside the trails, we keep our dog on a short leash. She does have flea and tick stuff on her, but I found them before the stuff could do anything to the buggers. They're going to be bad this year.

We've had the same problem with our dog and we rarely take him on the trail!

Wow, we go on the trail all the time. Our dog is on frontline plus - that should take care of them or do I still need to remove them???

We also have our dog on the same treatment - our vet did recommend that we still remove the ticks (including the head)...when we find them on her.

Our vet recommended this as well. She said remove the ticks. It doesn't repel them but it does kill them within 24 hours!

Dogs and Cats can get Lyme Disease from Deer ticks the same way humans can. It takes about 48 hours of contact to get the disease, so remove the ticks as you find them.

For those not familiar, Deer ticks are the very small ticks that look like 'baby' ticks. The big fat ones are not vectors of Lyme disease.

Is there a repellent that works to keep ticks off people and/or dogs? I swatted one off my puppy and I swear the same one ended up on me! Yuck!

I know of some herbal remedies that help repel them. Email me for the "recipe".

I, too, don't walk on the paths anymore. We took our dog down the path that runs across Vestals Gap the other night and came home with 6 ticks on him. We also give him Frontline, but the only thing that does is prevent them from biting him. So, unless we catch the ticks before we get in the house, they just jump/crawl off of him once we're in the house. I found one crawling up my leg the other night. Those things are just NASTY! ::shudder::

Mejrd, I'd be interested in the "recipe" too. Can you post it here?

FWIW ... the best is what the US Armed Forces use, anything that has a good concentration of DEET.

Spray or apply it to the cuffs of your jeans and/or sweatsocks.

There's alot of misinformation about DEET, here's a good page for info: http://www.deet.com/

(commerical plug) Watkins Insect Repellent Lotion is the best selling repellent in Canada, they get some rather large mosquitos and other biting insects up there. www.neil1951.com.

Avon also sells a DEET free product - Avon Skin So Soft Bug Guard Plus Expedition - the dark green bottle. I prefer that to the DEET products for my kids. No, I am NOT an Avon rep., I order online.

I took my dog for a walk along Beaverdam Reservoir this weekend and brought back a number of ticks. One was on him, and a couple others were found crawling around our bathroom (!). My guess is that they hitched a ride on my pants and dropped off when I got home.

I don't do this for my dog, but my borther used to sprinkle brewer's yeast on his dogs' food. Continuous treatment eventually repels fleas, but I'm not sure about ticks.

Definitely still remove the ticks, even if your dog is on Frontline. Usually they die once they get to the skin if your dog is on treatment, but we have still found some of our dogs that have made it to the skin! Check your pets every day for ticks! They are really bad this year!

Agreed - definitely remove the ticks. We give ours Frontline too and he still had one in his skin at the tip of his ear. Also, with Frontline the ticks may wander off the dog and onto your floors, or worse you! That's what seems to happen with us.

    Hello,

My dogs are not on Frontline or anything because it is pecticides you are using on your pets and I stopped it.
However, Frontline never worked for my dogs - I used a different kind called k9 Advantix and it worked.

I walk my dogs every day twice and they had so far only a few ticks on them.

What's your point? That you were lucky so don't worry about it? The tick threat is very real.

    Hello Homer Simpson,

I am sorry you might feel offended and misunderstood my comment. Everybody knows that ticks are a real threat.

For some dogs, Frontline is not working and it is always good to try another product out if your dog has still lots of ticks on him or her.

Have a nice day and a happy weekend.

    Natascha

Hi everyone! I as wondering if everyone who's dogs have contacted these ticks can reply with the exact location of the trail or area you walk through. Ever since I read this post last month I have avoided the trails. I went today for the first time in over 3-4 weeks (my poor dog missed her walks!). We came back and noticed no ticks on her. She is on Frontline Plus and we walk the trail from Milford Drive to Claiborne (right between the apartments and single family homes by the creek). I spoke with another lady with two dogs and she said she had not encountered any problems either. Does anyone think the infestations could be isolated to only some areas? That's why I think it would be helpful if everyone posted the exact location where they are experiencing problems (and whether or not your dog is under any type of treatment). I assume everyone who has posted lives in Broadlands.....
