Ventilation is not necessary, at least not compared to using a kerosene heater--this oil filled unit does not create carbon-monoxide. The oil is encased in aluminum and has heat fins on it. The oil is then heated up to the temperature you set it at and normal "air convection" will circulate the warm air throughout the room. We chose the oil filled unit because it is very efficient in retaining heat due to the heat capacity of the fluid, eventhough it takes awhile to heat up (not ideal for quick heat output, but rather sustained and efficient heating). Here is a link I found to give you a better idea of what they are. Mine is similar, but they all basically do the same thing. We turn ours on when we put the baby to sleep and turn it off when she wakes up (7-9hrs/night) and it only adds about $5/mo. to our electric bill.
The only limitation is that they recommend not to put the unit too close to curtains, furniture.....we have ours about 8" away and we have had nothing close to a problem.

    Hope this helps some.

Washington Gas will put you on balanced billing so you're not shocked in the winter, Virginia Power does the same. We've always done it that way, it's wonderful! Also - having a gas fireplace doesn't help. That's why we have a woodburning one and LOVE it.....yes - it's more work, but it is well worth it! At least we can build a fire and not have to worry about the high gas bills.:D I'm originally from Buffalo and having a gas fireplace is unheard of.

Yes, the budget plan is the best way to keep from gasping every month when you see your bill...at least you'll know what to expect every month. As for the drastic difference in heat in the levels at our townhouse, we insisted Van Metre send the heating guy in to regulate ours during our first walkthru (we were toasting upstairs, freezing downstairs). We are now comfortable throughout the whole townhouse. The main floor family room is still a bit cold, but mostly because of the floor to ceiling windows in the kitchen. Lined drapes did the trick there..

This is surprise for me jumping from $160 to $280 from last month to this month. Not sure weather/temperatures variation is that $100 difference from Dec to Jan.

You have to keep in mind that besides the temperature being colder the past month that unless you have locked in on a certain rate for the year you are paying for your gas based on the price Washington gas bought the gas from whoever they get their gas from. Their prices vary by month. They have a link on their web site that will show you the past years prices they have charged their customers on a month by month basis.

Our bill was a very shocking $400!

Does Washington Gas allow you to lock in a rate or must you switch to a competitor to do this?

We're in a classic in southern walk ... $550!!! That's just for two adults and a cool setting on programable thermostats.

We're topped out at $427 in a Jefferson. And that is keeping the 1st floor and basement at 58 degrees overnight and the upstairs at 69.

If we had better windows, all of our gas bills would be lower. The windows in our house are terrible.

Holy big bill Batman! So our bill this month is $100 more than last, grand total of $286 in a townhouse w/new lower sashes for our windows installed. What are your monthly payments on average if you do the payment plan w/Gas?

We have a SFH (Birchwood Model w/fully finished (and therefore heated) basement). Our last bill amount jumped from $220 in December to $380 in January. We are on the budget plan, however, and therefore we only have to pay $85.

$400 a month for gas is still ridiculous, but at least it is managable w/the budget plan...

We have an unfinished basement and probably keep heat at like 74 - due to very cold master bedroom and the fact we have a baby.

We are not on the budget plan - I thought you had to be 1 year into your home before you could do one?

I noticed some draft coming in through the windows and around the door lock of the front door so I know we have cheap windows for sure. Our old townhouse must have had some nice windows as we never noticed any draft except by the sliding glass door and one electrical outlet (go figure).

We signed up w/Washington Gas after our first months' bill (we closed in November). I hadn't heard anything about the 1-year requirement until I read it on these boards. Give them a call - it can't hurt.

All of our windows are drafty. I was pretty disappointed when I realized it. I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that windows are not a new invention. I'm pretty sure they make windows that are good at keeping out the cold. You would think that in a moderate climate like ours, the windows we have purchased would be able to handle the cold. Maybe I'm just being silly, though...

My Jan-Feb bill was $404 (spruce model), despite the fact that I was out of town for 10 days of the billing period and had my thermostat set at 58 and my water heater set at "vacation".

Be careful how low you set the thermostat when you are not there - sometimes it can take *more* energy to raise the temperature back up to comfortable levels than it would if you lower it not as much. I'm sure there is some formula out there that can calculate the optimal home/away therostat setting.

Our last bill for January was well over $500. We live in a Spruce w/o a basement. It's just my wife and I. I am really concerned about this. My Friends who just bought a new house in another development about the size of ours say that thier gas bill was only $350 for January. They leave the theromstate at 75 degrees all the time.
