Interesting conversation last night at my small dinner party. My buddy has a new girlfriend and guess what she works for a hospital that has single family residential neighborhoods very close to it . I asked her would she live near a hospital and she said not a chance and further into our conversation she said they get a tremendous amount of complaints from the neighborhood all the time. She said a lot of things that have not even been discussed here about a hospital being close to residential and not just across the street.

And they do not have a helipad. She works for Virginia Hospital Center. Which is not affiliated with either INOVA or HCA although many years ago when HCA got into that big mess with lawsuits they were part of the HCA system but opted out because they had nothing to do with HCA's major problems and went independent.

I also asked her about hospital care between different hospitals she said hospitals are so regulated and the staff that it is hard to have much of a difference they are all basically the same. She had some very interesting things to say about nursing which is becoming somewhat transient with the nickname Traveling Nurses becoming more and more in the medical profession.

I am going to leave you all with that little tidbit and a lot more I have not discussed that I heard from her until the hospital comes before the new BOS. I think you find some very interesting things going on in medical care that much of the public is not aware of. Not that it is bad but things that did awaken my thought process a bit.

The reason I don't want to go into depth this time it will just start another riot with Cliff and his pro hospital gang. I did not mention to her the BRMC controversy last night until later because I did not want to taint the conversation in the beginning. I will do that down down the road with her. But first I want to see what BRMC proposes before the BOS.

The opinion of one nurse, while interesting, hardly carries the full weight of truth.

I have worked for hospitals with single-family residential nearby, and I HAVE lived near a hospital, and I would live near a hospital again.

That doesn't make my opinion or experience more or less valid from hers.

Interesting indeed. I'd be interested in knowing how long she's been a nurse and what her experience in the field has been, and if she is one of those contributing to this concept of the"traveling nurse" phenomenon. From my experience, regulation simply ensures most hospitals provide the same basic level of service, but that alone doesn't guarantee all hospitals provide the same level of excellence in all areas of care. I would very much disagree with her statement that all hospitals are basically the same.

Here you go and all of a sudden you make this great big leap that she is a nurse which I never said. She has been involved in hospital administration most of her life.

And her opinion is not just her opinion have I have going by I also Know plenty of doctors in the medical profession both from designing their homes and as close friends.

Besides this is a land use problem. Land use should be good neighbors and not have this kind of controversy if it is well done and the good for everyone especially those most closely affected. But the unique use of hospital has many other negative issues that go beyond land use that an office project would would not have.

My position has always been about good neighbor development versus bad neighbor development both in the beginning with initial approval. But even more important what are the negative affect the hospital can have down the road with expansion and things that will never go away as getting the helipad approved later and much more, that an office project would never have hanging over the neighborhood.

Boy some of you will write several paragraphs on something that you any thought I was saying.

So why not ADD to the discussion by actually outlining her convincing points? Instead of just TALKING about adding to the discussion?

So yet another post that say nothing and contributes nothing. Why bother posting Lee if you are just going to taunt? If you have something to add.. spit it out. Or can I add this to my list of 'Lee's Coming Attractions' that never materialize?

    Not a nurse

You already do 11 to 12 minutes down the road

I am just saying regulation levels the playing field somewhat when you compare apples to apples.

Also when you worked for a hospital were you privileged to hear the complaints and what they were all about from the nearby residential ???????

You are one person that says you would live near a hospital that has worked for a hospital and just how far do you live from this proposed hospital. Cliff said he lives .6 miles from the proposed hospital yet if you google his address to the school building which is right next door it is 1.1 miles and the hospital will if built on the site where proposed he might even be a bit further, hardly that close to the hospital. even

Lee, not sure what tool you are using to do your distances, but here's the RIGHT tool for you to use. You are probably comparing street directions rather then actual distances. Without being exacting... you can see his estimate is pretty close (depending on which part of the property you want to nitpick over, etc)

    http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=1743012

Is that not close enough for you? What is the threshold of those that matter in your opinion?

You went as the crow flies I went by street addresses.

Wow that is pretty cool how you did that with google maps. :)

Like I said in my above post correct land use is important. Hospitals are a unique in land use as once established they mostly get what they want down the road. Office complexes generally build out and then move on. Hospitals always expand and rarely get turned down for their special expansions beyond their original intentions. Nobody is going to move a hospital once established and the hospitals usually get their special exemptions almost every time.

My argument is not just about the original approval it is the future and the exemptions they will ask for years down the road. An office complex is not going to have those future surprises.

which is why your attempt at calling Cliff wrong didn't really work.

You still didn't answer what distance 'matters' in your opinion. You tried to discount Cliff as too far away to be considered 'close'.

My sincerest apologies, o wisest of wise. I mis-read your original post, and thought you said she was a nurse. I shall officially retract the statement!
You are WAY too quick to beat up on other people, considering how much you complain people beat upon you. I thought my post was quite respectful, and was trying to engender discussion -- your reply was anything but.

And I didn't write "several paragraphs" on anything in reply to your posting. Maybe several sentences. Yay for hyperbole....

    Not the point....

I have lived much closer to hospitals in the past. Like, blocks away. within 5-10 minutes' walking distance. Which is what we were talking about... right? Apples to apples?

No, that's not what you said. To refresh your memory:
This is not the same thing as saying "regulation levels the playing field."

Regarding regulation, yes, it does set a base level of care, which all hospitals who wish to be either (a) accredited or (b) allowed to bill medicare must follow. Just because all hospitals have a level playing field to start with, does not mean all hospitals provide the same level of care, and does not mean they are all basically the same. Your (or rather, her) assessment to that effect is slightly disingenuous.

Sometimes, yes. (Ask more yes or no questions, they're easy to answer.)

It's a red herring. How close I live now from the proposed future site of the hospital does not change the fact that, if it were next door, I wouldn't mind living next to it. I said what I meant. I don't expect anyone else to have the same belief as me -- as I said before, my opinion or experience doesn't make anyone else's opinion or experience more or less valid. It is simply mine. I won't write off others' opinions just because they don't agree with me. (Which is to say, I understand people may not want to live next to a hospital, and I would not call them wrong for that if they really feel that way.)

Again, I have tried to be nice and respectful when replying to you, because I know how much you complain about how you're treated in the forums.

    Steve-
This is how Lee operates. He couldn't post a coherent, factual post about something to save his life. Even when demonstrated facts prove him wrong, he will ignore the facts, not respond to direct questions, and resume his some nonsensical points a few days later.
Save your breath! Ignore feature works well!!

Someone shared this post with me.
Okay, Lee. A $1000 bet. Come sit with me in my car. We will drive from the planned main entrance of the hospital to my house.
.6 miles or 1.1 miles. Whoever is closer wins the bet.
Want to put your money where your googling mouth is?

    I'll put $500 on Cliff.

And another $500 on the backtracking that now begins from Lee, with the use of "good buddy" to refer to Cliff now that he's been caught yet again. :nono:

tech when I first got involved in this discussion it was from a land use which does include design uses.

That is still my main objection it is a bad neighbor development as compared to a office development. Hospitals present unique problems over office developments. If this hospital was proposed on some of the vacant land a little further up the toll road toward leesburg you would not see much outcry like the approved rt 50 hospital. It is a location problem being in a residential neighborhood. If you had proposed flex buildings there and someone wanted to build office buildings that looked residential you would hear praise for a land exemption not this all out controversy and hate from both sides.

Tech don't worry how you treat me I have been worked over by the best all my life, you are all lightweights when it comes to that. I believe there are far more complaints about me then the other way around ha ha ha ha ;) then I get emails supporting my views many times that some don't want to say here because of the way a few people on these forums will go after them if they agree with me. :)

The bet's not lunch. I got your note. Was that your car in my drive? I came out on the porch, but the person did not get out, so I went back in. When you want to bet $1000, come on back.
The main entrance to the hospital is at Broadlands Blvd. and Glebe View. Measure from there to my driveway.

Hello Cliff the main entrance to the hospital is where the canopy on the building is not the entrance next to the park.

See you changed the bet already because when you got my note you realized you were wrong so you got more specific to skew the bet. That is how you operate.

Just out of interest, when is this hospital going to be voted on...... OUr county needs the tax dollars, and our community needs the employer and service.

Everybody can not be happy in every situation, but this is for the good

    Okay, Lee.
The main entrance to the hospital has been, and will be, at the intersection of Broadlands Blvd. and Glebe View. Fact.
I said the bet was to the main entrance of the hospital. Fact.
You didn't know where the main entrance to the hospital was. Fact.
The corner of Broadlands Blvd and Glebe View is not the entrance by the park. Fact.
You didn't even know this. Fact.
And you said I changed the rules? You are mindless beyond belief.

But I'll tell you what, I'll still bet the $1000 it isn't 1.1 miles to "the canopy of the building" to my driveway. To clarify it even more for you, measure by road from my driveway to the main entrance, then as the crow flies to the canopy of the building as shown on the hospital plat. Clear?
Now put up or shut up.
    Back to the "ignore" part.

A long long time from now it has to go through the entire process again and I would imagine through review through our planning commission. Unless some shenanigans are played here these are all new people looking at it and this process on something this big takes a very long time. And if everything goes well it could be as long as four or five years before they open their doors. Then you have the break in period to get the hospital operating right and the bugs worked out.
