Becuase it is. Having been involved in this process for the past several years, I am know far more than I ever wanted to about how the state controls access to hospital services in Virginia. For another entity, other than HCA, to build a hospital in Loudoun County they would need to receive approval from the State to add beds in our region (the Certificate of Public Need (COPN). Given the fact that the people responsible for advising the state as to whether a COPN should be approved twice recommended denial of HCA's request to simply relocate existing beds in our region (the State Healthcare Comissioner ignored them the 2nd time only after HCA reduced the total number of beds in their COPN) and that this same group of people claim our area has a surplus of beds currently, there is no chance new beds will be added to Loudoun for several years even if we are lucky.

HCA's beds are Loudoun's only option and HCA is not interested in building in the South or West. They are committed to BRMC. No BRMC = No new hospital for Loudoun.

The State Healthcare Commissioner. Everyone seems to forget that the allocation of beds to particular areas (ie psych, med/surg, cardiac care, etc..) if controlled by the State of Virginia. No one, not LHC, not HCA, not the BoS, can change the status of a hospital bed without apporval from the State.

"Because it is" sounds like something my parents used to say. Or "because I said so". The argument didn't do it for me then and it certainly doesn't do it for me now!!

    *** WARNING WARNING WARNING ***

"chris" tactic at play here -- ignoring an entire post of good arguments by singling out a single phrase from that post.

You're conveniently ignoring the rest of my message where I explain just exactly why I said "Because it is".

I'm not taking a "chris" tactic. I'm just trying to understand why everyone is so adamant about Broadlands as being the only logical place for a hospital is all. I'm just not convinced, and I've been listening to both side for the past two years.

So many good things to respond to, but so little time.

Then we will have to agree to disagree. That's fair enough.:)

Whether or not Broalands it the most logical place for the hospital was a valid arguement when this process started. While I would argue that it is, there are valid points on the side of those who would argue against. Problem is that we are past that point in the discussion unless you are willing to wait for the "fairytale" world of the "Comprehesive Healthcare Plan" to come to fruition. HCA picked the Broadlands site, HCA owns the beds, HCA has approval from the State, and HCA can deliver a new hospital in the next 2 to 3 years. HCA is not going to change their mind and build in South Riding or the West and they are not going to start the process over to look for a new location in the East.

Either HCA builds here or there is no new hospital. Not every hospital supporter is adamant about the Broadlands site. However, since we all recognize that a new hospital is needed now and will be desperately needed as the population grows, we all support building the new hospital as soon as possible and that means BRMC.

Haha - Chris isn't the only one who did that! My good points are frequently ignored (except by you, Pats). [V]

Sorry, but I disagree. The tactic of ignoring an entire post except for one or two selected phrases is absolutely a 'chris' tactic. As someone who has been following this issue for 2 years (presumably in these forums), surely you can recognize that. If not, I invite you to read (or re-read) any of the other hospital threads in which chris was involved -- you will see that this was one of "her" favorite ways to avoid responding to the "tough" posts.

Oh, sorry -- welcome to the forums! I see that you just joined the forums last week and have only posted in this thread. Hope to see you around the rest of the forums! [8D]

Edit: this post should go above Homer's (I deleted it for revisions, and, Homer...you're WAY too quick!).

I appreciate and understand everyone's fears about "chris" tactics. However, when people start accusing others of being "chris"-like and such and putting it in such bold WARNING statements, it makes fairly new members like me very wary and even apprehensive to post any of my thoughts and opinions on the board. Please be aware when you do this. We can all disagree on a topic. That doesn't mean everyone is out to cause trouble. This is a discussion, sometimes even a debate, forum.

I don't trust HCA to keep that ratio. What's to stop them from taking away physical beds and adding Adult mental later.

    Homer,

Agree with you on the SCC (Virginia State Corporation Commission) however it has nothing to do with healthcare. I was speaking of the Commissioner of Health for the State of Virgina, Dr. Robert Stroube. He is the only one who can approve a change of status for hospital beds.

It's all in the family down there (which is another thread). Why is Stroube so reluctant to add beds, etc.. This was not just a HCA problem. LCH also was denied.

Lol, AFGM was actually accusing me of being Chris. Haha. It was veiled but you know that's what you (being AFGM that is and not you the reader or Liskey) meant. ;)

Also I think Pats was partly kidding. He's like that. Welcome aboard!

If you appreciate and understand these tactics, then don't use them. They raise a big red flag, at least in my mind. As one who has experienced this tactic on numerous occasions, it does not feel good to craft what you believe is a good argument, only to have it completely dismissed with a quip based on a single phrase contained in the post.

I thought vweisenburg nicely summarized the arguments related to the question you asked. Of course, it is your right to disagree, perhaps even forcefully, with them. Please don't dismiss them out of hand, though.

Like I said above, welcome to the forums! Don't be afraid to post again, we don't bite! :D

BRMC is going to be closer to the west and Purcellville, via the Greenway. Much closer than going down Route 50 to the Fairfax/Loudoun line.

South Riding will need "localized" health care at some point, but the population is not there yet.

By the way, I did not hear any objections from westerners, or South Riding residents at the hearing to the location. I didn't hear everyone, but I did hear a majority. I do recall a few westerners supporting BRMC.

I'll say it again, the only "location" objections raised, at the hearing, came from those with financial interest in LHC and those who live in Broadlands.

Healthcare is a regional issue not a Broadlands issue. That is why the State regulates the timing, needs and services for hospitals. It establishes decisions from an objective point of view. Decisions for the greater good.

The only reason the County is involved in this "healthcare issue" is because of the rezoning request. That's it! If you want to boil this issue down that is the bottom line. The County has zero jurisdiction over the amount, or type of healthcare. The State decides that. Therefore, we are only talking about a zoning issue. In other words, do you want an office park or a hospital? These arguments about types of service, amounts of service, or location of service are irrelevant.
