Again I say, I have my own server and host my own web/email as I'm sure several ppl do on here (such as thehouse.net). I'm gonna assume we're fine.

    Hey all.

What the board decided to do was require all users to be able to be contacted. This means having a valid email address (already a forum requirement), valid name, address and phone number if the HOA needs to contact you. All new users signing up will be required to input this information in. All current users will be grandfathered in. If any user does not have this information in your profile (or is invalid) and the hoa needs to contact you for whatever reason, they will ask the admins to temporarily suspend the account until the information is provided.

All future users will not be able to sign up from free email hosting sites, nor will users be able to change their email to free sites. Current users are ok.

Hope that made sense. We don't know when this will be 'made live'. We have to change quite a bit of forum code to make it work.

I went to update my profile to add the required information - and see no obvious place to put it. You might want to add some additional fields to the profile for this information.

It's not in place yet. Thus my message of:

"We don't know when this will be 'made live'. We have to change quite a bit of forum code to make it work."

couldnt you use phone/ip addres range athorizing because it is possible to take the isp's for the broadlans and they all who have a close ip address range for openband and others or the hostname. because i do that ip address thing if possible like my dynamic ip address range is something like 65.246.82.xxx for my self and have a hostname like userxx.res.openband.net (x= an number) it would put some stress on admins but it is useful.

That's not feasible because no one has to route traffic geographically.. plus you assume you can FIND all these IPs.. plus that you could keep this updated.. plus how would you find all these IPs BEFORE someone logged in.. plus no one has to be LOCAL to be living in broadlands or viewing the forum.

In a private network, your peering point could be across the country when you are sitting in your house.

And some folks dial in to a national ISPand get an IP assigned as they dial in. Or they access from work (or hotel rooms from aroud the country).

How do you propose that the web server detect what phone number you're dialing in from?

I thought it was interesting that the FAQ's for the Forum software has information on the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). Actually, I thought it was pretty cool that the have a link to more information for COPPA - and that it goes to the pub our office put out.

Okay - not that anyone else cares about this..but it's my 2 seconds of fame - such as it is....

    Hi folks-
Well, it appears that Chris was busier than we originally thought. The following user ID's have also been linked to the same person:
Killerbee, Stephanie, Dang Yo Huang. Consequently, these users have been locked out.

Why'd it take so long to link Killerbee and Stephanie to Chris? They've been around a long time. I think a public flogging will suffice.

those accounts were all closed together (re killer, chris, etc). The recent change was closing Dang and some other lingering ones.

I'm outraged. Dang was the man of reason and honor on these boards. I shed a proud tear for his untimely demise.

It's sad when one has to adopt an alter ego using naivety and broken english to speak the truth and call people out on their BS.

If Chris (et al) is a Homeowner, what prevents him/her from having a real logon once an appropriate punishment is metered out? I don't think any homeowner should be perma-banned.

Mainly we want to trust people rather then suspect people. Honestly, its simply a matter of free time, not that the user was 'duping us'. The site is maintained by volunteers. When issues that require attention arise, we will investigate, but we certainly don't want to question every poster or account.

As for Homer's comment, my personal opinion is two things:

    1) Just with all community ammentities, if you abuse your privledges you will loose them.
    2) The user has no intention of participating in the forum legitamately as shown by their lack of response to emails, using fake email accounts, and repeated behavior.

If the user wanted to participate legitamately, they would have stopped their charade after getting caught the first time. Instead, they continued it, and still never responded when confronted. The user has no legitimate intentions IMO.

And you can't really assume the user is a resident in broadlands, unless we were to goto the ISP and try to request records, which would probably be a painful process requiring the lawyers. Beyond requiring a return authorization system by either snail mail or telephone, there is no way to validate users as broadlands residents. I don't think there are any account numbers associated with HOA dues, etc.. but I could be wrong. I don't get a bill for those.

    -Steve
