The dude has a life expectancy of 10 years. This is NOTHING. If I were one who lost my life savings thanks to him I'm doubting I'd feel one bit better right now.

Maybe if we threw torture in there somewhere? :rolleyes3:

A coworker today compared this to the Enron debacle and said since the $$$ stolen was greater makes the act more criminal. I don't believe most of the blue collar workers at Enron had the disposable income to invest the way Madoff's clients did and in each scenario, lives were ruined.

    Prison trivia question:

While many criminals have been given hundreds of years in prison as a sentence, they either get parolled or die in prision long before serving the full sentence. Who was the US prisioner who actually spent the most time (one sentence) in prision? Actual years spent in the cage?

    :)

that's why they should just behead him and stick his evil, blood drained mug on a stake outside of the offices on wall street to deter other investors from trying the same shenanigans. SAVE TAX PAYER DOLLARS and SEND A MESSAGE- DONE AND DONE.

    THIS. IS. SPARTA!!!!!

Manson? Nah he is but a young pup at "only" 38 years in prison for his last conviction(convicted 1971). He is way way down the list. :)

Don't assume that the longest serving prisoner is/was in a Federal Prison. May be he was, maybe he wasn't. (snicker)

Concerning Madoff, here is a PDF of the sentencing http://i.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/images/06/29/madoff.sentence.transcript.pdf

What is especially chilling is that for the purposes of sentencing, a "crime level" based on the amount lost is used as guidance. The highest level is Crime Level 52. The loss limit for Crime Level 52 is $400,000,000. The guidelines never considered a crime to involve a loss higher than that. The amount that Madof stole may never be known but is estimated at at least 10 times higher than the maximum limit as defined in Crime Level 52.

Even the judge remarked that Madoff's crimes were off the charts by orders of magnitude.

Madoff destroyed families as if he attacked them with a weapon. If he had burned down all his victim's houses and destroyed all their material possessions, he still would have done less damage then his fraud.

It is so hard to put his crime in any type of prospective. IMHO, In some of the cases it would have been more merciful if Madoff just killed the people instead of destroying their lives like he did.

Madoff's statement would have been laughable if the circumstances were not so tragic. Madoff talked about "mistakes" he made and was unable to fix. It takes a long stretch of imagination to consider a fraud scheme lasting almost 30 years as a "mistake"

Now what has to be determined is what prison he will be put in to. Let's hope it is not one of the more "comfortable" ones. Even though this is technically a "white collar" crime, the extent of the destruction does not warrent any "comfy" sentence IMHO.
