Madcat, we probably have more common ground than you think. It's just boring to agree with everyone all the time ;)

Absolutely love hockey and have a son who sleeps with his hockey stick. Are you from up north? Favorite team? (Don't say the Red Wings, please, ha ha!)

But if they were all the World Cup then would it be the World Cup?

Answer this: when soccer is mentioned why do so many have to say how much they hate the sport?

If the question of a baseball stadium came up most everyone would talk about the stadium; not whether they liked baseball or not. But with soccer it always how much they dislike the sport. Which is fine that you hate soccer or think it is boring but that has nothing to do with the stadium.

I guess if soccer were so unpopular then it should just go away like a bad restaurant.

And now I have gotten way off topic. ;)

    Regards,

    Mike

    Yup,

You do notice that I asked how you felt about a soccer stadium being built and 2 people had real answers. The rest was the stock.Soccer is boring stuff. Typical.

They don't? Or do you mean they dont care about it. Look at the CFL...losing money. NFL Europe gone.

Exactly. Which is why soccer is only worth watching every four years :D

Um, they play soccer in the stadium. I am assuming no one is going just to see the stadium. Inseparably linked!

To be honest, I think there are 2 reasons people will mention that they hate soccer. (1) They get sick of soccer enthusiasts trying to force the sport down America's throats in a sense, trying to convince us to like something we simply don't like despite the fact that it's the world's most popular sport. We don't care, we don't like it.
    (2) Because as your post shows, soccer fans are wayyyyyy too sensitive about it, and so it's fun to see you get all riled up defending the sport! Kind of like soccer players are--owee, they fall down all the time and are so dramatic in the way they flop around.

See, you get all riled up and say illogical things and end up sounding like a 7 year old, ha ha. I mean that in a kind way, really. Anyway, the market will dictate whether it goes away or stays.

My advice. Love your sport, support it, wear your favorite team's jersey, encourage your kids to play...but don't expect others to like it and don't get defensive when they don't!

    Have a great night :)

Skull, don't be so sensitive. Opponents have cited two reasons we wouldn't be in favor of a stadium here--we don't have an interest in the game and we don't want added traffic. Both legitimate reasons.

We're in America. Americans love football. I don't expect Europeans to like our football nor do I expect Americans to like soccer in the same way.

    Sensitive. Me. Nah.

Traffic is a good reason for opposing the stadium. And as for people in this area not liking the sport I dont think that is legitimate. They are not trying to form a team with supporters coming from this area, they are possibly thinking about moving the most popular(in the long run so forget about LA) team to a different location if the deal does not go through in DC.

As for the we are American comment. Well that seems almost xenophobic. We are in America. And in America there is a great mix of all types of races and cultures, many of which love soccer.

As for the stadium it is called a soccer specific stadium, but that wont only pay the rent. They would have concerts and other events there as well. As well as being the home to the DC United Academy and the U-14 and U-16 Boys teams as well as the U-13, U-14, U-16, U-20 Boys and U-14, U-15 Girls teams.

But traffic seems to be the biggest issue that people have with the staium possibly coming here. Fair enough.

Oh, I almost forgot that I have to prove that I am an American.

Im watching the Nats shut out the Reds right now.(nevermind Griffey just hit an RBI)
I watch every caps game during the season.(That might make me a canuck though:rolleyes: )
And I will spend this fall watching the Eagles squat away another season(but that might make me an idiot.)

Skull, of course it's legitimate. The question was whether we'd want a soccer stadium built here. You asked my opinion. Since I don't like soccer, I wouldn't see the benefit to a stadium. But if there is enough interest here, then go for it. I don't commute or drive much here anyway so traffic isn't that big a deal to me. I just like busting on soccer, ha ha.

Let me clarify so I'm not accused of being xenophobic or any other kind of phobic. I know there are many who love soccer here, but in America, football is the most popular sport by far and soccer doesn't even show up on the radar screen (like my beloved hockey). Actually, that's a good analogy. Canadians are wild about ice hockey and I love it, too--but I never expect it to be as popular here as it is in Canada. Same with soccer.

Don't be goofy--you've served our country. No one is questioning your patriotism (though many qill question your choice of football teams!). Have a great night and enjoy your home brew.

As for being goofy, well I was actually being goofy. I thought this thread could use it. And I can't enjoy the homebrew. Too many other people did over the past week and I only have two left and I promised one to Cliff.

    Cheers.

A stadium would never happen here. If there wasn't enough support to to MLB here (remember the proposed site near Innovation Drive where they would have turned the quarry into a lake outside the stadium?), there would never be enough for futbol. Skull-You should have been here for the debate/debaucle around Disney's America! That was entertaining.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disney's_America

That got killed just because you could SEE a bit of the highest building/attraction from one area of the Manassas Battlefield. And then, lets not forget paramutuel betting and the slow and painful death of the horse track.

I also love that one of the other arguments against all of the above is that they just bring in "low wage" jobs. As if 500 nail salons, chinese food restaurants, and big box retail bring in Ph.D. postions. I'm with Lee--this place has missed its opportunity to be someplace creative, attractive, unique, and exciting. All we ever do is say no.

Anyone want to talk about the hospital? :)

I do wish I had seen some of this. I do hope that the stadium stays in DC...I just dont see this area as being good for a stadium. It looks like this are likes to kill ideas before they can bring in money. Too bad.

Lest us not forget the Taco-Bells, McDonalds,Subways, papa johns and pizza huts.

Read my posts please. I didn't say everyone and all things being equal, I would much rather live in Fairfax County over Loudoun County.

Don't underestimate the welcome mat that may be there for MLS. A major supporter of MLB was our own BOS VC Bruce Tulloch. He finds these things very intriguing, as his company would love to get the concession contract for a large venue created by these sports leagues.
