have a delima. My wife and I live on a corner lot. We have had continuing diffculties with dog owners letting their dogs poop on our yard (we love dogs and own one ourselves). We have tried everything to curtail this highly inappropriate activity. This includes putting up signs, installing a remote control sprinkler system that will spray the dog and its owner when they come on our property, and returning the poop in a zip lock bag. Yet, we still find poop in our yard. We just finished a major landscaping project and you'd think that people would have enough sense to stay off of our property.

    Any thoughts or suggestions Thanks

Try posting a sign that says your lawn has been treated with chemicals.

Nothing shocks me anymore these days... Highly inappropriate and rude activity is rampant everywhere.
I understand exactly how you feel.
I think you have tried many more ideas than I could have even come up with, particularly the remote control sprinkler... just wow.
Last year I bought a huge container of red Cayenne pepper and sprinkled it on the main areas of intrusion on lawn, every three four days... you could try that. I am not sure if it works. I just sort of gave up...
I do not have a dog but if I did, I would never let them do anything on anyone's property. I just think it is rude.
I am all for walking the dog, getting some exercise but they should do the business in their own yard.

You could put up an invisible fence up to keep the critters out which I am thinking about doing myself.

I also have a corner lot with a common area on the side and people still let their dogs go through a hundred feet of common area into my yard it is unbeleivable. That is why designated dog parks would possibly help this problem where like in other areas that is the only place you can take your dog.

    ???

For an invisible fence to work, each dog has to have a transmitter collar...they're for keeping dogs in a yard rather than keeping them out, unless you can figure out a way to make each dog in the area wear a transmitter collar.

I say just set up some tasty bowls of antifreeze along the peremiter of your property. :)

Perfect, then if one wants to walk dog then one must register the dog and have the dog wear a transmitter and people that want the yard protected can put up invisible fence. :) Although the dog park seems to be the best solution for everyone.

I am all for the dog park (we have two dogs, one of whom "grew up" in an Arlington dog park), but even that will only work if people are responsible and clean up after their dogs. A dog park is an off-leash exercise area...it is NOT for dog owners to simply let their pups relieve themselves in! In our old Arlington dog park, most owners were not only good about picking up after their own dogs, but also picked up at least one poop left behind by irresponsible owners. That ensured the park was mostly clean. From the behavior I have seen around here, I am not optimistic that the required level of responsibility exists!

Invest in a good slingshot and some rubber gloves. Aim carefully at offender's house or person, pull back and let poo fly. :)

Enough is enough. A sling shot is sounding real good at the moment and no I mean that as a joke. Although tomorrow I am going to have to say something to one of my neighbors, and I am sure this is not going to be pleasant. Here it is dark and I look out the window and see one of my neighbors with a flashlight in my backyard letting their dog take a crap by my basketball court in my back yard. As I said before this person had to go across a 100' feet of common area to even get there. I love animals as much as anyone, but this is too much. I don't want to put up a fence so I guess I will be the one to end this insanity by just a few that ruins it for the rest. I have asked this person before very nicely to stay off my property. I guess they think they are invisible at night with a flashlight, go figure?? what is wrong with this person and a few others. Unbelievable, but I can tell you this will go to small claims court if this happens again and don't listen. Hate doing something like that, but my attorney brother it can be very effective especially when it could cost them and a days work and some money. My brother does not practice in Virginia so he was not sure if Loundoun county small claims would allow such action. I plan to check this out in the next few days and let you all know or if there is someone here that knows maybe you could inform us if this is doable.

    A real pissed off

These inconsiderate people around here have just begun showing up in the last year very weird. I also wonder if they are not really peeping toms using their dogs to disquise their possible peeping sickness.

well, even with everything that we have done, sprinkler system, dog signs, animal control, the sheriff's office and the utterly useless HOA,requesting that owners p/u their dog's poo...we are now going to resort to a surveilance camera system to capture images of the offenders.
Once we have actual images we can then "charge" the dog owners with trespassing, littering and other various health violations (per animal control)...with all this I'd be happy to spend a day in court...if this would ensure neighboors keep their dog's poo & pee off my landscaping and property. I thought having a corner lot would be a great thing - but even spending money to beautify our home and Southern Walk - apparently the dog park is at the corner of sunstone and ridgeway.

"Utterly Useless HOA" - you want them to monitor your yard for dog waste? While they are at it, they can water your new landscapping for you. Maybe they can even take out your trash.

That response what "utterly" uncalled for!

Hey T8erman - since you're not the one that gave the HOA proof, such as pictures of the dog owner on multiple occasions...and then were told by the HOA that we had to call Loudoun County Sheriff's b/c the HOA does not get involved - I would say that calling them "utterly useless" is true and by the way we already have a sprinkler system but maybe you can come over and take out or trash:D...remember on tuesday's and friday's....we can give you the code to our garage make sure you come after 7AM so you don't wake up the wife...who know's she might make you a fresh pot of coffee to thank you for taking the trash out.

How is it the HOA's responsibility to enforce trasspassing laws. I suspect that when you called Loudoun County Sheriff they probably told you unless you have proof that a person's dog is tresspassing, they can't do anything. SO, if the Sheriff can't do anything, WHAT DO YOU EXPECT THE HOA TO DO? I normally attend all the HOA meetings, and I don't remember seeing you there in the past year (unless you went in June, which I missed that meeting). So before you ASSume that the HOA is "utterly useless", maybe you should step back and re-asses what you are asking for, and to whom your asking.

As for the HOA, while I have my complaints, for the most part, the Broadlands HOA is extremly helpful and more than useful.

    Get a grip,

The only thing I am gripping right now is the remote to my spinkler system....which probably got you wet when your dog stepped foot onto my property...or am I ASSuming again. Oh the Sheriff's Office called out Animal Control who cited the owner a $500 fine for not picking up. Tell you what the next time the HOA has their meeting I'll be the one in a plaid suit blowing kisses at you[}:)]
BTW - since you seem to ASSume the entirety of the situation and have a glass ball could you give me the winning lottery numbers for tonight's drawing? That would be far more productive than your comments.

QZPmal, if I could make a suggestion to you, and as often happens on this forum, please don't take this the wrong way, but if you have such a passion for this community and the way things are handled (or not handled) by the HOA, I would suggest that you get involved in a community committee or run for the HOA to make changes. There are several openings on several committees throughout this community and it always seems to be the same people stepping up to the plate to help. It might be nice to get different people involved so they can bring their thoughts and ideas to the table. You need to keep in mind that the HOA can only enforce the already existing laws, we can not override a law. As was mentioned we are not the personal police force for the community. You are not the only one who expects the HOA to get involved in personal matters: dog waste, problems with neighbors, etc. We simply can't do that. The advice you recieved to take your problem to the county was sound and is the protocol that must be followed.

WOW!! And I thought I had problems in "good ole" Broadlands. Your problems trump mine by a long shot. If you have spoken with your neighbors/put up signs etc... why in the world would they continue to be so spiteful?? I truly do not understand people around here [V]

    qzpmal-
As one of the Board members of the HOA, please supply me with the information you provided the HOA and who you gave it to.
If you have evidence of the offending dog owners, and are willing to testify to that fact at a Board hearing, we can begin the process of pursuing the owner.
I can be reached by email through the forums or you can call me at 703-729-7320.
