Ok, I'm gonna vent so get ready...

So, how hard is it to put your trash in a trash can? I live in a townhouse and for some reason the HOA feels we're not worthy of a trash can. But, we called AAA and got one anyway for a whopping $3.50 a month added on to our HOA monthly fee. Money well spent so that our trash doesn't fly down the road, hit people's homes and cars, land in neighbor's driveways or in the road where people need to stop their cars, get out, move the trash just so they can continue down the road! Come on people, is it really that difficult or that expensive? I'm so tired of cleaning up other people's trash! And, on recycle day...now that's fun, too. RECYCLE BINS ARE FREE FOR EVERYONE...JUST CALL AND GET ONE, PLEASE!!

There really should be a rule about this! I can't stand another season of picking up my neighbor's trash!

Can anything be done about this? I really thought people had some common sense and would do something to prevent their trash from flying all over Broadlands!

The builders aren't much better! There was some siding on our street the other day. If that stuff flies around too much someone is going to get seriously hurt or someone's property, seriously damaged!

    :(

I have been known to collect the trash and put it back on the owner's door step (a lot of times you can identify its origin by an address on a piece of mail/etc.). It has worked for me in the past.

If that doesn't work, less subtle hints might work, such as securely affixing the junk under their windshield wipers...

Too funny! I've put it on doorsteps before but it tends to fly away before the owner returns! Hmmmmm, under the wiper? I like that idea!

I live in a single family home and when I left this a.m. - there was flying trash all over - so having a trash can doesn't necessarily solve the problem is the owner fills it so high that the top doesn't cover it. Another problem - some people in our neighborhood cut limbs from their trees and left them unbundled in the street since Sunday....not good.....

I agree trash flying is a pain...but regarding the toters...the HOA doesn't deem town house dwellers - and I am one - unworthy of receiving one, many have told the HOA that they were too large to fit into our garages and would rather purchase a small one that actually stores inside...just a reminder...cans must be stored out of sight on nontrash days...on a windy day like today even the most conscientious homeowners trash may end up flying around the block, so maybe we could all try to be a bit forgiving and give each other a little help with keeping our neighborhoods attractive and trash free...

The trash cans that aren't AAA aren't really that much smaller...but, they are much lighter and have a tendency to fly around. (our can fits just fine in my 1 car garage) But, those aren't the people that annoy me. It's the people that put lightweight stuff out on the curb when they know it's going fly. I know they know it's windy so why not weight it down or get a can? I agree that sometimes things happen even though people try really hard and things can't be helped. But, those who don't even try are the annoying ones.

I help all the time, just wish I didn't have to do it twice a week on trash day!

Who told HOA that they were too big for their garage? Nobody asked our opinion. I'd much rather have a mandatory fee for the cans and have everyone have one. I know not everyone feels that way, though.

    Robin-
The simplest thing to do is knock on the doors of the homes with the offending flying trash and politely tell them what has happened and offer some suggestions to secure their trash. The problem is even worse with newspapers on recycling day. I have had discussions with a few neighbors about this issue and have had great success. It really isn't hard to do. If you are worried about confrontation, a polite note left in their mailbox may also work well for your situation.
Regarding trash cans, I live in a single family home and do not like nor have ever used the green AAA behemoth cans.

Just last week one of our neighbors put out boxes with moving paper just shoved in...need I say what I saw when I got home from work?? Brown packing paper all over my yard, driveway and flower beds! All I do anymore is shake my head in disbelief.

PS, don't leave notes in someone's mailbox...it's against the law.

Don't forget that the wind is strong enough to blow a trash can over during the middle of the night and trash then escapes. That's what I observed on my street.

Knowing how windy it was going to be last night, I placed my can on its side so it couldn't fall over and the lid wouldn't come off. Simple solution...

    Dixie-
Then go with Plan A and actually speak to a neighbor. Or, of course, put the note in the paper slot in your mailbox post, if you have one, or between the box and the outgoing mail flag, or in the front door, or......refer to Plan A!!

vacliff - Plan A is the best bet, I was just repeating the advice Neilz gave a while ago and actually in the last Broadlands newsletter there was a big article about the illegality of leaving notes inside mail receptalces.

I myself have been a recipient of nasty grams in my mailbox from a neighbor and it's so immature. People will write things freely that they would never say in a "real" conversation.

I have a different concern here. I live in a townhouse and have my own toter. However, AAA people pick up the trash and just throw the toter. They don't care, where they leave it. My wife keeps complaining about this. Last Friday, I was home and was observing as to how they are handling it. They just took the toter, emptied and left it right in front of my drive way and by the road. It was not really by the road. It was in the road. Why can't these guys put it back in the place where they took it from?

Last Tuesday, when I got home, I couldn't find the lid (ofcourse, I have my own toter. not AAA one). The toter was lying right in the middle of the road t obstructing traffic. Finally, I found the lid in the yard of the house across the street. Had AAA put the lid back and left it, the lid wouldn't have gone that far as it fits tight with the toter.

Can we raise this as an issue at HOA meeting or something?

Robin: When I spoke to HOA, they mentioned to me also about AAA toter not fitting in my garage.

I hate to complain about the trash company because they truly work very hard often in poor weather conditions.
They are generally in a full run down our entire street.

That being said, I often witness poor treatment of the cans and recycle bins. Many people on our street use
their own containers for recycles to at least split paper and cans/glass/plastic. The trash people generally
throw these receptacles from where they are standing to wherever they came from. I often find them blocking
the driveway. One time they even threw it right into my driveway when they saw me backing out.
