Noticed this on the Greenway Website:

Since you travel the Dulles Greenway regularly, you've more than likely noticed the banner announcing that TRIP II is "Expanding to Meet Your Commuting Needs." Due to the increasing number of vehicles using the Dulles Greenway (over a million vehicles in June 2004), four new lanes are being added to the Main Line Toll Plaza. This will ensure that commuters can continue to get to their destinations in a timely manner. All of the new lanes will incorporate state-of-the-art smart highway technology, including electronic toll collection. Costs for the four additional lanes are estimated at $3.1 million. The Dulles Greenway will utilize monies from TRIP II's Improvement Fund to finance construction costs. We expect to have the four lanes operational in December of 2004. Construction will primarily take place during off-peak hours to minimize any inconvenience to commuters. If you have any questions or concerns about the construction, you may send an email to Ann Lawler, Marketing & Public Relations Manager, at aelawler@dullesgreenway.com.

Guess this is what they will be using the toll increase for. Havent they noticed that the toll plazas arent always the problems. It the idiotic design where 4 lanes at the toll plaza must merge into 2 to get to the main toll road and in the evening the reverse. I hope these new lanes are going to be "Smart-Tag only" Would be cheaper than building the booths,etc..

ALso speaking of toll attendants - have you ever noticed there are sometimes 2-3 peopls hanging out in the SmartTag lanes? I presume they are looking for toll runners - isnt that what the cameras are for? Whay are we paying for these people too.

Thanks.. I looked on their website the other day after the banners were up.. guess the webmaster wasn't in sych with the laborers :)

I see the backups at the booths being three fold

    1) backups from the cash lanes clogging the two lanes approaching the booths
    2) too many cash users, not enough exact change or smarttag users
    3) the backups heading east going up the overpass PAST the tollbooths.

The last one is the one that urks me the most. There is often a backup approaching that overpass, and as soon as you crest it, its wide open. There is absolutly no reason for backups between there and the tollbooths at all. There is never trouble with people merging back into two lanes from the booths (except the usual unfriendly lane change), and there are ZERO merges or exits past the booths until you hit the tollroad PAST the overpass. yet there is consistantly backup approaching that overpass. Mindboggling. Next thing you know.. we'll hear cries for 'all roads must be straight!!! curves are dangerous!'. Because there are two curves between the toll and the overpass :)

As for the people at the booths.. I think most of the time its people moving between booths, or possibly checking on the equipment. IE, checking the smarttags are registering as they should.

The number of toll runners is insane... more so on the toll road then the greenway from what I've seen.

It doesn't suprise me about the toll-runners... after all, the greenway is the epitome of highway robbery 8)

A pro-rated system (just for smart tags is fine.... incentive to get one) would be great, but I guess it would cost alot to implement...

Sometimes (before the Boycott) I go through with my EZ Pass b/c I forget to swap it. That could account for some of that.
