Anyone have any idea why cops are holding up traffic for the past 2 mornings? I was stopped yesterday at Ashburn Village & Farmwell Hunt (? I think that's what it's called there) so a procession of motorcycle cops & 3 "tour" buses could come through.

This morning I missed whoever came thru but noticed a huge traffic backup and the cop was sitting at the light box again.

I'm quite curious as to who the tour buses belong to and why they get to skip traffic lights:)

Redskins training camp? I wonder if the players are staying at a hotel (e.g., Lansdowne Resort) and traveling together to the practice facility in the morning by bus?

My wife and I have noticed the same thing -- it actually started last week. We also think that it is for the Redskins. We have heard that many (if not all?) of the Redskins are staying at Lansdowne.

Interesting -- I'm sure that Lansdowne is now a pretty wild place in the evening.

So let me get this straight. Our county police and tax dollars are being spent to escort football players to practice? What a joke!
Please tell me this is not the case.

Perhaps Danny Snyder is footing the bill for the police escorts.

And what's your point! Perfectly justified for a hometown professional football team. I'd get them anything they want. It is a known fact the Cowboys have become extremely paranoid with the return of Joe Gibbs. Security is paramount :)

    Sincerely,

    Life long Redskin fan.

The Redskins are staying at the National Conference Center on Route 7, but not the actual Lansdowne Resort. Although most of them live in the Ashburn area, it is typical for them to be housed in one central facility during summer training camp (recall they used to train in Carlisle PA and then Frostburg MD) so curfews can be enforced, everyone shows up on time for practice, etc.

As for local monies spent on the team for police escorts, keep in mind that Redskins Park brings revenue into Loudoun County as well, especially Ashburn. Many of the coaches and players live here, I've seen several in area restaurants, and the local media all converge on Loudoun coffee shops, sandwich places, etc. during the practices. I think it is worth the trade off.

I bring money into Loudoun County also. Taxes, restaurants, etc. Where's my escort?
That argument doesn't wash. AOL and MCI contribute more to the local economy than Redskin Park. I don't see police blocking traffic so their employees can get to work.
Don't get me wrong, I bleed burgundy and gold but I don't see why they would be entitled to such privilege.

I remember seeing something in the paper about this, and indeed, the Skins are paying for off-duty police to assist, much as Funeral Parlors make arrangements for the same type of escort for funerals.

Does that mean that if I pay for the off duty police, I can go through the red lights, too. COOL! (Just Kidding)

On a similar note, has anyone noticed the signs on route 28, both north and south of Waxpool, routing people down the Greenway to get to Redskins Park. Talk about a scam. One sign is southbound 28 right in front of the Carmax...

I don't think its a scam, as I suspect VDOT put it up there to route the people heading to the training camp away from the construction area. I do agree its taking the long way around, but if Snyder would pay for the paving of Loudoun County Parkway from Rt 7 to the camp, it would solve that problem. [:p]

If southbound drivers continue to the greenway instead of turning at Carmax they head right THROUGH the construction zone at Waxpool. I don't think it's a scam I think it's just plain stupidity on the part of the logistical planners. Why not turn them right at Carmax, Left at the stop then right on Waxpool to get around the construction?

    WHINE WHINE WHINE

You can argue all you want about if professional sports actually have a positive or negative impact on a region's enconomy.. I'm sure there is plenty of books on the topic. But if you are going to whine, at least do it over something significant. Like the significant tax breaks they get, or stadium financing, etc. Don't get petty over something as simple police directing traffic or providing extra security. Like someone else said, its probably even likly the Redskins are paying for that police help.

Do you cry the same way if a politican gets the escorts? What about international dipolmats who don't give us ANYTHING? What about extra police presence around protestors?

Ah, that's exactly what Joe Gibbs said. That's exactly what Joe Gibbs wants everyone to think. Watch out! We're in for an exciting ride.

Does Joe Gibbs still own the redneck-mecca team?
