Went there over the weekend with the family. Great place! Super sushi and very friendly staff. Personally, I like it better than the other three sushi establishments in Ashburn. Anyone else try it?

    Yes,
My wife and I went there for Valentines day (I forgot to make reservations at our traditional Valentines place) and we love it!. Good Sushi is hard to find outside of the District.

Matsuba is located at the Broadlands Village Center (the Safeway strip mall).

Now there's a sign that says "Grand Opening" and the Matsuba has been replaced by Samuri (sp?). Anyone know if this changed hands? Sure hope Sam is still the owner. He was the reason we would go there (oh, and the food is good too).

Interesting. Was Matsuba doing good business or did Sam sell because business was poor? I must admit, we didn't frequent it as often as I would have liked. But the sushi was great. I hope the new place is good.

On another note (sorry for thread hijacking), but Cafe Opera has been impressing us lately. We went there during their first week and thought the good was delicious but th portions were too small. However, since then they have been perfect and we've been getting carryout once a week.

    Cafe Opera delivers too!

I have a feeling Sam wasn't getting the business needed. Everytime we went there we were either the only or one of very few groups of people there. I really like going there & hope it stays around! I'd rather see San Vito kick the bucket than the sushi place (sorry not a big fan of the Vito).

there is a lot of competition for sushi in Ashburn, for instance Nagoya is a tough competitor... that place is always busy.

As very regular customers of Matsuba, we were very disappointed when Sam told us of his impending sale. (We used to visit Nagoya on a regular basis, but Sam's sushi was much better.) His new place will open in approximately 6-7 months, in a new Stone Ridge shopping center at the intersection of Route 50 and the Loudoun County Parkway.

Thanks for the info. I loved how Sam knew us by sight & was super attentive. Any indication why he left? Will it be the same name in South Riding?

Hate to say it, but I'm not surprised they closed. I was in there twice and the place was empty. Part of their problem may have been an inability to communicate with customers. Not being a big sushi eater, I tried to ask questions about the menu. This got me nowhere, since the servers didn't seem to understand me very well and were of no assistance. I stopped going there.

Hi all. I'm sorry for your sake that such a great restaurant is moving farther away from you, but thrilled to hear we'll have good sushi closer to us! Right now we go to Ashburn, Sully or Herndon. If it is moving to the commercial area that's building at 50 and LoCo Pkwy, that is the area slated to be the "town center" for the Dulles Suburban Planning Area (corner of the airport). Stone Ridge has a large commercial area of its own developing, but that community begins on the southwest corner of 50 and 659, and extends south and west from there. Boy will it be nice to have a good Japanese place closer!

Any idea what else is going there? Is this the place where the new Giant is? If not, any idea what else will be in the new Giant center? Sorry if this is hijacking the thread but info is info:)

Hi JenTimC. The new Giant opens tomorrow, just south of 50 on the west side of the Pkwy. I don't know if that section is where the sushi will be, but there is commercial development really starting to take off down here. You can now come down 606 and go straight into South Riding, and that whole intersection is the "town center" area. One of the most exciting things I've heard (to me) is the possibility of MOVIE THEATRES! Hope that is true--we now go to Centreville or Manassas.

p.s. to AFGM--it figures! (kidding, friend!)

    Barbara-
In case you didn't hear there is going to be a large theatre megaplex in Brambleton, opening in '06 or '07.
