    From Ashburn Farm's web site(http://www.ashburnfarmassociation.org/fttp_status.htm):

    ---------
    Status posted: 5/17/06

Current Status: We have recently found that Verizon has been in our community "measuring areas for fiber optics". The plans for the deployment of the FTTP project in the Ashburn Farm Community have been moved out until later on this year. Verizon representatives have agreed to keep us posted as new updates on this project, as it affects the Ashburn Farm Community, are released.
    ----------

It appears from Ashburn Farm that Verizon is communicating with their HOA. Has Verizon contacted our HOA?

Jim, this is Verizon's canned response... That's what they tell everyone and you never hear back from them. If you notice all their previous 'pieces of information' they always say the same thing, "We're planning on doing X-Y-Z, but we've had to move this out until later in the year." Same line they used on us last year, and you can expect the same next year.

They won't even return Loudoun County's Broadband Czar [FONT=arial, helvetica]Scott Bashore's phonecalls. And when they do talk to him, it's basically irrelevant information. Their not stupid; they know that whatever they tell him will be communicated back to all of us, and then they'll be 'committed'... So, they basically say nothing, albeit these small irrelevant blurbs, to keep us waiting for their 'carrot'.

Verizon always does this; they say they will do this and that, hire a bunch of lobbyists to get a bunch of laws passed in Congress in their favor, and then let us hang to dry as they reap in the profits. Verizon will never run FIOS here unless they can get some sucker to foot the bill for running all the fiber in the hard rock we have here. Ultimately, that sucker will have to be you and I, via our tax money...

This is all my personal opinion and I only speak for myself....

OO is just the new york area cable provider. no chance of that.

For someone looking to host servers, I recommend collocation. If all you need is a website.. things can be as cheap as $10/month for shared servers and you get plenty of bandwidth.

Bear in mind that they will be talking about getting broadband for businesses and government agencies, not for residential. Also note that there will be an update by Scott Bashore, but the bulk of the workshop is a sales pitch by Intel Corporation...

I've gotten suckered into one of these in the past; the first 60 minutes is interesting, the rest of the day is a sales pitch...

Still, I would be interested to hear what Scott has to say.

Keep waiting ... !! Until it makes monetary sense to them, to wit: the number of houses will pay for the cost of digging through all that stone; it won't happen.

I'd recommend getting Fios TV when it's available in your area. We were recently upgrade to Fios TV in Brambleton, and the picture is great. It is such a huge improvement over our old video system. We've had the Fios internet service for about a year;it is very reliable and download/upload speeds (15/2) are great.

[sorry - deleted my last post, wanted to keep things simple]

    maeve,
What do Brambleton residents pay for their 15/2 Internet Fios speed? I know that your Technology fee was recently lowered to $82.74/month for the combo of Fios Internet & Fios TV.

Do you know what the break out pricing is for Internet and TV? As you know, Southern Walk has a mandatory subscription technology fee, too, thus my curiosity. I know of two residents in Southern Walk who moved to Brambleton this year.

Meanwhile, I'm glad that Fios is working out for Brambleton finally. Congrats. I hope Fios comes in quickly to accommodate our north Broadlands residents in the open market.

:pofl: ... oh that made my day ... Verizon, spending money to dig through rock ... highly unlikely. FIOS is only in Brambleton (they have rock like ours) because they already had fibre optics run through the neighborhoods.

They supposedly have FIOS in Pittsburgh too ... where ... not even close to my area.

USAGal, we get our internet and TV bundled in our HOA fee. The technology is mandatory like it is for Southern Walk but we do not have phone service bundled in. Our fee was just reduced as we converted to Fios. I think the tech fee portion of our HOA fee is now $83/month for 15/2 internet and Fios premier level TV. We were not given a breakout of internet vs. TV. That will likely happen as the budget is rolled out. We do have to rent a set top box for each TV (basic box is $3.95 per month, $9.95 for HD box, and $12.95 for HD-DVR box) and do pay extra for movie channels, such as HBO. There's plenty of free video on demand stuff. The best thing, though, is the quality of the picture: It's just outstanding.

For those of you awaiting FIOS, this may be your year. One of my coworkers lives in Ashburn village and early this month the Verizon guy showed up (yes, witht he ENTIRE network) and said "I'm here to install your FIOS, please stand aside."

    **POOF** he now has FIOS.

In December I talked about FIOS with Scott Bashore, Loudoun's Tech Czar. I remember he said that Verizon was putting in the main trunks on the main roads, and I think he said that we may see some areas of Broadlands getting FIOS at the beginning of 2008. Of course, that's just his estimate of what Verizon might do.

He's on vacation this week. I'll check with him when he's back and get the complete story.

I spoke to the Verizon representative for Loudoun County at the OBS meeting last month. Even he had no idea when it would be coming to Broadlands. I gave him my info, but never heard back from him.

I understand that most of the Village has DSL too. The Broadlands is still without even that service. I see no reason why we will see FIOS anytime soon. There is no love for the Broadlands from Verizon. :(
