A friend of mine had adopted a German Shepard mix for 6 years. One Chrstmas Eve, she was fooling around with her two kids in the kitchen while they were waitig for the holiday roast to cool. They were picking off loose pieces of the roast, taking little intermittent bites- all laughing, giggling, tickling - when suddenly their dog lept into the 8-year-old son's face and attacked him. Bit him so hard in the head and face he needed stitches. Sadly, the dog whom they had loved and trusted for so many years, had to be put down before Santa could fill his doggie stocking.

That's less of a training issue and more of an issue of lack of supervision. Children are often not aware of how their innocent lack-of-fear behavior is threatening to animals. A baby walking/crawling right up to a dog and bopping it on the nose or yanking on a whisker is a sign of straight aggression and is treated that way by the animal. You can explain and teach this to a child, but of course an infant is uncontrollable. This was a matter of supervision gone horrible wrong.
Also, **** happens. It's sad as hell, but it's just one sad story. I certainly hope the local town government doesn't start a tirade against mastiffs and large dogs.

That is HORRIBLE! I can't even imagine this poor old man's death.

Yes, another story. This is a gruesome trend I'd like to see resolved. Soon.
