Everywhere I went today, I saw orange and maroon. I think it sends a signal that, despite the horrible and unforgetable incident yesterday, Virginia Tech and the Virginia Tech family are strong.

    My wife was sent these:

We're Alumni from '90-'98. My condolences to the fellow Hokies affected by this tragedy.

So today, i'm listening on the radio and i hear them talking about the convocation yesterday, and the moving speech at the end that a poet did. At the end of it, they broke into the "Let's go Hokies" cheer. The radio (and i use this term lightly) personality says, "it was a moving speech, but i don't get the cheer at the end. it didn't fit. i just don't get it."

He's exactly right--he doesn't get it, b/c it's a VT pride thing. in my opinion, it's no different than the chants of "U.S.A." that broke out at Ground Zero after September 11th. I had a friend down at VT who went to the convocation, and he was moved to tears by the speech, and the follow-on cheer, where everyone united as one to show their Hokie spirit. If you've been there, you get it.

I saw that portion of the ceremony yesterday and thought it totally fit. I can't remember her name but she is a world-know poet and a professor at Tech. I understood the chants at the end and it brought me to tears. You're right, it's just like the pride after 9/11. They are strong, proud, together in their grief, and together in their rebuilding.

CindyB--The poet's name is Nikki Giovanni. She was my professor for a semester of creative writing and she was AWESOME! I was driving home when I heard her speech and I burst into tears. She added the perfect touch to the convocation. I have such fond memories of my years at Tech...that will never change. GO HOKIES!

Very touching -- all the attachments people put up today were very good. I even put one in my cube.

I was talking to some people at work, everyone has either dug up an old VT shirt they had or have gone out and bought a shirt for Friday. It's very touching that the Orange and Maroon Effect will sweep not only Hokie Nation on Friday, but America. It's great that the whole country gets to see how strong and united we Hokies are.
I'm heading down for a graduation on the 11th, and i don't know how it's going to feel seeing AJ and Norris. The area on the drillfield in front of Burrus Hall looks to be enough to bring anyone to tears. I'm looking forward to paying my respects (and finallyseeing my buddy graduate at the ripe old age of 31 :) )!

    A Call For Reason

IMHO - this is a very good, sound article. I only put this here to point it out, not to cause some debate over it.

Anyone know where to go in this area to get a VT shirt for tomorrow?

Hey...was that a swipe at the burgundy and gold of the 'Skins? :)

My wife said Target had a bunch of shirts yesterday. We will be wearing our maroon and orange tomorrow (we are both JMU alums). Go Hokies!

Well, Champs (at Dulles) has about 6 XXL Sweat Shirts left and a nice selection of ball caps. They have some stuff kinda in the right colors, but not really.

And in the What in the Hell were you thinking? Department:
As I stood there looking at the hats the nice lady next to me piped up and said (for no reason): "You know, if I had a T-Shirt company, I coulda made a killing on this!"

I swear - I could NOT make that up if I tried.

I think it's kind of sad that people are capitalizing on this by trotting out all sorts of merchandise. Same thing happened after 911 too. :(

I had some luck with the Foot Locker at Fair Oaks (I got a XXL) and ****'s at Fair lakes said they would have more VT items in on Friday, but for now you are free to choose from their maroon and orange $50 Under Armor shirts.
