Anytime someone is trying to find out more information on a topic I do not consider it a hijack of a thread :)

The NRA has some really good classes on basic gun ownership, and when I was a member at blue ridge (in Chantilly) they often had classes, though I never attended any. I am willing to bet that the collective here and probably even SEG would offer classes for the type of information you want.

Blue Ridge Arsenal allows you to 'rent' different guns. This allows you to try a few different calibers, makes, etc to see what you like.

The Gun Shows do not really have 'demos' but you get to walk around and talk to people who make their lives selling, collecting, fixing, and shooting guns. Everyone I have ever dealt with at these shows has been friendly and knowledgeable. They have a vast array of gun types and you can get a feel for what fits your hand there.

Hope this helps some, I am certain others on the bulletin boards will have even more information to share.

I used to go to Blue Ridge until one day, a couple of guys 2 lanes away from me start shooting their guns 'sideways', gangster style. I immediately packed my stuff, walked out, told the manager that I'll never use his range again after seeing someone acting so unsafely with no repercussion, and left, never to return. That was 12 years ago...

I'm sure things have changed since then and/or it was an isolated incident, but that incident really ticked me off to the point that I'm still not planning on going there anytime soon, especially with SEG so close by. To me, gun safety is primordial and I refuse to be around anyone putting themselves and others in danger.

Just my 2 cents worth of a rant.... Sorry for the hijack...

I canceled my membership there as soon as I heard SEG was coming out to Ashburn....even though I haven't made it to SEG yet :(

You can't even compare them; SEG is so much better... At least from what Blue Ridge was 12 years ago :)

Why should it matter if the "gentlemen" were holding their weapons sideways as long as they were pointing downrange at the targets? Perhaps they were simply seeing what is was like to try that style. Now, if they were being otherwise reckless and not pulled from their lanes, then I agree with leaving.

Sorry T8, but that's not how you properly handle a weapon. I don't care where they were pointing it. If they were stupid enough to do that, I have to assume they're dumb enough to do something even worse. That's when you walk away and let Darwin take over...

I have taken a few shooting classes and have great respect for the handling of weapons, HOWEVER, there are a few circumstance where holding a weapon sideways may be valid. Try shooting lefthanded where the cartridges eject into your face. Police will hold their weapons sideways if also holding a riot shield.

Holding a riot shield is probably the only valid reason to hold your weapon sideways, I'll agree with you on that point. Other than that, we need to agree to disagree...

Here's an interesting article regarding the practice:

Looks like it all started in Hollywood, in the 1993 movie Menace to Society II...

The range officer should have stopped them, since it was pretty evident they had no idea what they were doing. I'm not going to stay in a place that puts my life in danger, and neither should the management of the place...

In comparison, SEG has range officers constantly monitoring all the lanes and they will let anyone know immediately if they're being unsafe.

Let's see.. you ever talk on the cell phone while driving or witness people who do? Do you get off the road if you do see it? That is more likely cause you harm or death then someone canting their weapon while shooting.
If you saw me praticing and I was doing quick draw, would you leave then too? I was taught to shoot as quickly and accurately as possible.

T8, what does this have to do with me not wanting to be around two idiots shooting sideways at a range? It's my prerogative; feel free to defend them as much as you want, I'm done listening...

OK, so, here's some interesting tid bits I have had thrown at me over the past week. As background - I am now an owner of an EBR (Evil Black Rifle - ok, well, carbine actually) and as such sought education at the premier web site for such firearms. I read some things about SEG & BRA, then did a bit of research. Ready?

The owners of both SEG & BRA are supporters of the Democratic Party. So, by default, they support the Dem's restrictive gun ownership agenda.

The attourney that won the DC firearms ownership case was, forcebly, asked to leave the facility on opening day.

Having said that, understand I have a year membership at SEG and intend to continue to shoot there. Also understand I am not, by any lengths, a gun "Nut." However, I post this simply in the spirit of info sharing and full disclosure. I seem to recall that somone from SEG posts here, I hope it's one of the owners and I hope this invites them to share with us the answers to "Whutyoutalkin'bout,Willis?"

Also - I have nothing but good things to say about SEG. I consider myself a novice shooter and those folks are nothing but friendly & helpful towards me.

But you all will understand, I am conflicted.

Wanted to kick this back up and see if we can plan a day/evening at SEG.

Not sure if others caught the gun show in Chantilly last week. Parking was a nightmare and there was a healthy turnout. I picked up "a few rounds" for the range, so I'm ready to go. :)

I can't make this Friday (my daughter's birthday!), but would love to shoot with you all if it ends up being on a different day.
