And where you live makes what difference in this point? This area has TONS of free parks, etc.

We all rode our bikes, skateboards, played sports, played video games, built stuff, whatever without costing money. If we had money we rode to the shopping centers, played at the arcade, ate, whatever.

Even in that single regard of outdoor activities, this area has lots of parks and trails that other areas have NONE. Do you know how much we would have killed to have a pool growing up? And within bike distance??? Only pool we had access to was the Elk's Lodge which was tiny and we had to have adults drive us to.

I'm curious, what kind of activities or stuff should be available to satisfy teen's desires then?

Do people want a amusement park in their front yard that doesn't charge admission before they will accept there is 'something to do' around here?

Again.. don't confuse civil liability with other things.

If you kid gets in a car wreck, you are FISCALLY responsible (if they sue, it will be you) but if you kid gets arrested for the accident, he sits in jail, not you.

Only stating my opinion from a perspective that I can remember (at least for a little while anyway). Again, it's not if YOU believe it to be true or not, it's if THEY believe it to be true. Fixing that perspective isn't going to happen on this forum.

And yes, I think a personal amusement park would work. I'd like a rollar coaster and bungee jump in my backyard. I'd be a very happy and well-adjusted adult. Would that go against the HOA guidelines?:D

I want a go-cart race track like all-sports. Oh wait I don't have an income so make it free and in my back yard :)

Guinness on tap at home would be the killer thing. Except you have to have the special tap setup. Cha CHING! Yes I looked into it.

How does the kid know what is right and what is wrong if he is not taught by his parents?

It shouldn't be the responsibility of the schools to teach kids morals. Besides, isn't one of the parents of one of the kids a school teacher? I wouldn't want that parent teaching my kid right from wrong since it didn't work with her own child.

There's a huge difference between a licensed driver having an accident and an unlicensed one having an accident.

The licensed driver is allowed to legally drive a car and has both received training and shown some semblance of proficiency in driving a motor vehicle in order to get the license.

The unlicensed driver hasn't shown anything other than that he is breaking the law.

There are plenty of things to do that don't require either money or a car. Try jogging. Or reading a book. That's yet another cop out.

Besides, with no money, how are the kids able to buy the guns, drugs and alcoholic beverages? I bet Mommy and Daddy are subsidizing.

This is exactly the kind of judgment that fuels my "childfree by choice" option in life. What is tragic to me is that this kid made a bad decision that he and his family will have to deal with for the rest of their lives, and complete strangers pass malignant judgment on them and how they raised their kids. Just remember that it could be anyone of you/us in this situation. I am disgusted by so many of these postings.

Huge difference? Difference by law.. not by the situation leading up to it, or the ability to avoid the situation. That's the point. The people and the circumstances would be no different and the outcome would likely be the same. So the point is, the illegal nature of him driving is not the REASON for the accident, its simply one of the facts about the situation.

Drivers ed does very little when it comes to actual driving. I'm sure if this kid regularlly drove cars he had as much if not more experience as a kid who just got their license.

If I recall, for drivers ed in MD I only had to have 2 hours of driving time.

One of the things you learn in driver's ed are the rules of the road. To pass the written test, you must know those.

One of those rules is that you don't drive on closed roads.

It wouldn't be me. My kids know that you don't drive on closed roads. They know that you don't drive without a license. They know that you don't ride in a car without a seatbelt. Why? Because I taught them. That is my job as a parent to raise my kids to live as law abiding citizens who don't endanger their lives and those of others around them. They aren't perfect but they sure don't whine about not having anything to do and they don't mess with drugs and go kegging on the weekends.

You can not say that it wouldn't be you. At the end of the day, all you can do is teach your children right from wrong and then HOPE that they make the best decision for themselves, per your teachings. I'm sure the parents whose children were involved in this accident also taught them that one shouldn't drive on closed roads and one doesn't drive without a license, etc. etc. But, they obviously made the wrong choice which resulted in this horrible ACCIDENT. I was outraged tonight as I read these postings. How dare you judge these parents and children when you don't know them and probably don't know the circumstances of the accident. You have no right and as part of this community, you should be offering compassion to the parents who lost their loved ones instead of judging and basically saying what bad parents they are. Get off your high horse and if you do have children, go give them a kiss good night and thank god that they are safe and alive and pray that they are never involved in a horrible accident like this.

Prosecute the negligent parents who let their underage child drive without a license AND take away any other children they might have an place them in a good Christian home.

smythla - your kids aren't perfect??? Guess you reserve that title for yourself. Based on the intolerance and lack of compassion you show in your posts, I wonder if you have any tolerance or compassion with your children? Or maybe you save your compassion for your cat(s).
