I disagree. Stating that there are poor people in Virginia (and in Lynchburg) is a fact. Having grown up poor and minority in Virginia, I know it for a fact.

Actually, the reason I defended Lynchburg as being labeled a "poor community" is because I am from an area south, Danville, that is MUCH poorer than Lynchburg. Plus, there are plenty of other areas in the southern most part of Virginia that's even poorer than that...mainly b/c we never got the same funding for education that Northern Virginia got, but that's a whole other discussion..... I actually always considered Lynchburg as being better off or in the middle class category for the state.

That was not your elitist statement gryphon.

Your elitist statement, dripping with hypocrisy of your supposedly liberal/progressive views, was that prisons should only be put in poor areas. Anywhere but where you live, right gryphon?

And gryphon, just so we can all be clear from which "repressed minority" race you hail, would you care to tell us what minority class you supposedly represent? You are the self-proclaimed defender of the African American race and you attack us caucasians as members of the "slave master race", but I don't believe you have ever referred to yourself as black. You are always pretty careful about referring to yourself as simply a "minority".

It might be helpful for us to understand your perspective and the racism to which you have been exposed if you would clarify your race for us. Thanks.

I recognize your viewpoint. However, I respectfully disagree. I've been to Lynchburg, and it is the practically the definition -- in my mind -- of poor. I'm sure you could find poorer areas, but there's plenty of poverty in Lynchburg.

Not an elitist statement -- it is true due to very simple economics. A prison is to a poor community as a Verizon corporate office is to an affluent community. Poor communities are less selective about which employers come to their areas.

I know what we should do then. Before we build any more prisons let's bury all of our nuclear waste in poor areas and then build the prisons on top of them. Since poor people don't care what jobs are available as long as there are jobs, this should solve a lot of problems.

No "Spin Zone," T8. Instead we got the "Ignored Zone."

Yup, gryphon is a minority all right--he's a member of that repressed class of gun-toting liberals!

Gryphon, you've got no credibility on race/discrimination issues if you refuse to answer the simple question--what is this minority class to which you supposedly belong?

At Killer_Bee was banned for SOMETHING. Had I been a moderator he/she/it would have been banned for their anti-ABC Store thinking!

Rural Virginia already accepts a disproportionate amount of the nations trash, especially from the NY/NJ area, IIRC; so somebody beat you to the punch on that.

Sewage treatment plants are local -- there's one in just about every modern community in Virginia. That, unlike prisons, is not something that is typically located in a remote area. Leesburg doesn't hide theirs in a poor part of town, though -- the hideous odor is used to welcome visitors at night at the most heavily traveled entrance to Leesburg, Route 7.

I brought up the issue about prisons being constructed in poorer areas with my friend over at the DOC. He says that typically, prisons are built in these areas in order to provide the locals with jobs and what not. However, he says that NOVA has needed a prison for years due to a few high-crime locations. What has prevented the VA DOC from constructing a prison here, was Lorton, a prison that was run by the DC DOC. Now that it is closed, VA DOC feels that it's time for a new prison to be built here. Unfortunately, Loudoun County has the potentially bad-end of the deal. As Barbara had said earlier, this will be an interesting issue to follow.
