What would be the reason for a prison in Northern VA.

One reason lorton stayed as long as it did was politics from DC and supposedly the criminal families from dc through daily buses could see their very violent criminal relatives and criminal family members. Prison that hold long term inmates should be built in as an isolated location as possible and as far away from civilization as possible. There is no reason for a prison for long term extremely violent inmates that makes any sense economically or otherwise in northern va or near any major metropolitan area. Further if their not yet caught criminal pals should up for a visit in a rural town prison they certainly would not be able to blend in and cause even more problems as easily. Also much harder if these criminals escape to get back to the city and disappear.

^ Lee, it can't be too difficult to stand out in a town such as Bluemont. Even though Bluemont is located in Loudoun County, it is rural. Furthermore, if an inmate were to escape, it would be no different than escaping from a prison down in southern VA, as Bluemont is also isolated.

I do see your points paki!!! But seriously do you really think they the residents would really let them build a prison on some of the most expensive real estate in VA when there are so many other spots to build one. And where the prison employees can live very nicely instead of driving from where ever so they can find a place they can afford to live. I really don't think so. There would be even a bigger uproar then there is to those proposed power lines. Besides a lot of powerful people live out there. I just don't see it.

I'm with Lee -- too many wealthy and influential people in Western Loudoun, so for one reason or another it won't happen. It would make a lot more sense to build it in the Warrenton/Front Royal area, where it's easy access to I-66, Rt15, Rt17, Rt29, and with I-81 a relatively short distance away.

Now I have seen some pretty small DOC facilities, so I could envision possibly a small facility that houses nonviolent offenders and blends with the surroundings. I still think it would be fiscally irresponsible though.

Consider all the opposition over the years to Disney's America, Dominion's power lines, widening Route 15, another Potomac River crossing (mainly from MD), the Saudi Academy, affordable housing in Ashburn Village, a psychiatric ward in the Broadlands hospital, the race track, group homes, etc.

I have to agree with Lee and Earl4 here; I just can't picture western Loudoun rolling out the welcome mat for a prison.

The HUGE difference is the state of Virginia does not have to ask for permission.
