70% of the people at my church always back in. The time they spend negotiating the parking pretty much negates the (supposedly) shorter time it takes them to exit the spot after doing so.

    I understand the pull through.
But what about (at the mall parking lot, say during the crazy holiday shopping peak) the laborious procedure of blindly backing a huge SUV into a space, which often takes a few tries as dozens of other cars pile up around the scene since they can't get by. It's far worse than a parallel park, which most people will avoid at all costs. What's up with this?

...and then they can't open their back door to get their stuff inside, right? People do that at the grocery store too.

Yes! It appears to defy all logic. So I'm wondering if there is some benefit to this maneuver which I'm not aware of. Maybe it's to practice hand/eye coordination? Or you get a special discount on your insurance if you can demonstrate this skill? Surely it's not just to irritate other people!

I back in at Church. It's surprising to me the number of other Church goers who will not let someone out of a parking space and into the exit line. If I'm facing out, I feel more confident about edging out into line.

Yikes! Church-goers so impatient and ruthless?! There must be quite a rush to begin the week's good deeds if escape strategies must be planned in advance.

I lived in AZ for a number of years and there I learned to be choosy about where I parked because of the sun and the heat. So in the summer, even now that I live here, I'll try to find a spot under a tree, or if that isn't available, I'll find the one that allows the least amount of direct sunlight into my car. Sometimes that means backing in because less heat/sun gets into my car via my tinted rear window than it would if I allowed it to come directly in the windshield and fry my seats.

Can't speak for everyone, but my husband will back me up on this one... I'm pretty anal about where/what direction I park. (To the point that he often :shakehead: at me.)

And please continue parking your cars in your driveway so they block the sidewalk. I mean, parking on the road? How could anyone walk that far?

    AFGM -

When I’m on duty and we see this we usually creep up behind the car / truck and lay on the air horn. The don’t usually park there a second time. Unfortunately, in the state of VA, we don’t have the power to write a ticket. Only cops and fire marshals can.

As for pulling a hose through a car, it wouldn’t never happen. We've all seen that picture before to, and trust me, it was a probie that must have done it. (and gotten seriously h3ll for it!) If that situation did occur, we would simply break one window and unlock the doors. :)

Parking backing in was taught at my corporate safety driving class (also my husbands). App corporate america beleives it is the safest way to park because a high % of accidents occus when people back out of their parking spots.......

It is funny to find this thread today. There was an emergency at the Safeway parking lot yesterday (Fri). Car caught fire near Radiance. Fire truck, rescue truck and police car came in to respond. At the time they pulled in and drove by the cleaners there were 4 trucks parked on the fire lane! 2 deliveries, 1 Brinks ($), and 1 FedEx. Luckily they were able to continue to drive past all 4 of them with no problem.

Worse than vehicles parking in those lanes... is the horrible access to that plaza. If we had access to/from Claiborne - response vehicles could arrive so much faster.

Not to go off topic but this is in the works. The HOA just got Saul's new plans for a light at Demott and Broadlands Blvd, with 2 left turn lanes and a right only entrance near Starbucks.

You'll find all your answers in the earlier posts referring to self-importance! What posters are complaining about pertains to them and they don't even see their actions the same way. There's always an excuse.

OK BAND PARENTS - QUEUE UP!. Driving around the queue to pick up your little precious is rude and dangerous. As you go zipping past the other patiently waiting 'rents you could get real up close & personal with one of our band kids - which would NOT be a good thing - understand?

I think the point on backing in is... the time spent backing in is done where the person is already in the travel lane and can see..

    vs..

backing out into the travel lane when they can not see. Making it much easier to pull out into traffic.

So... take longer to pull in, but be safer to pull out.

Personally I was never good at backing in.. so I never do :)

If drivers cannot safely see backing up then they shouldn't be driving the vehicle;)

Ever been parked next to an SUV. Quite hard to see traffic in the lane sometimes.

The rule-of-thumb used to be do not back in when there is other traffic in the lane that would have to wait on you.

    Whatever :rolleyes3:

Everyone knows that practically in a parking lot, especially with vehicles around you your vision is limited.

Not so much the cleaners, but the ABC Store - now that ticks me off.
