Depends on your street. It is my understanding that most of the roads within Broadlands are still controlled by the developer, not VDOT. I would call the HOA first. And I doubt there's any chance of a speed bump.

I ask about this long time a go. The answer, Broadland Assocaition allow no speed bump ever. You out of luck if you need speed bump.

In Ashburn Farm we have dealt with the issue of speed bumps quit extensively.

First, if the road is within the control of the Association, usually townhome roads, we will support a request for speed bumps. Ashburn Farm is responsible for the maintenance of these "association" roads, ie. snow removal, repairs, and replacement. We budget for all of these costs.

There are two options for speed bumps. One is temporary and the other is permanent. Each speed bump costs in the neighborhood of $1500. We have rejected temporary speed bumps as they require installation of spikes within the pavement. We've found that the spikes cause a significant increase in the damage to the surface. Weather gets under the bump, penetrates the holes, and eventually cause premature maintance repair or replacement issues. Therefore, our current choice is permanent speedbumps.

The Association can be put in a tight financial situation if precident is set to allow speed bumps upon request. Several neighborhood have submitted "affirmative" petitions for speed bumps.

To avoid this financial issue; we currently allow individual neighborhoods to decide on speedbumps. After a neighborhood has voted (2/3s required) affirmatively on speedbumps, the neighborhood receives a special assessment for the cost. These costs are spread over a 3 year period. The Association provides the funds up front, manages the installation, finances the three year cost and maintains them. The special assessment is where the rubber "meets the road"...pun intended.

For example, one townhouse neighborhood is considering installing six speed bumps. There are 109 homes in the neighborhood. ($1500x6/109 homes/3yrs = $27.50 annual special assessment for three years)

This seems to be a fair way to go about the process. It is only available for streets in the Association's control. We have not had to deal with VDOT maintained streets.

The Broadlands HOA will consider speed bumps IF it is a street maintained by the Association and not VDOT. We are currently looking at a request now. Our view, like AFGM's, is that a majority (75%) of the homeowners must agree to it and be willing to pay for the cost associated with installing and maintaining them.
Give Wes a call, 729-9711, and let him know what street you are on. He can tell you whether it is an Association or VDOT street.

Here's a novel idea. How about we get the police to do their job before taking more money from the residents?

Ooooh. Don't tempt me. Durning the last blizzard folks in SUVs used the median as their own personal left turn into the Saul shopping center. If I had one I would have put it under the snow. Hahaha.

What streets in Southern Walk are vdot controlled and what are association controlled? Ridgeway, Inglewood, Engleside, etc...?

Ridgeway has gotten to be a real problem with speeding.

Wes at the HOA can verify whether this is true, but I seriously doubt any Southern Walk roads are under VDOT. I believe roads are only transferred to VDOT once a neighborhood is basically complete. There is a lot of Southern Walk still to be constructed! (And it is my understanding that some roads, like the Milford Drive area across from the Southern Walk Model Court, will remain HOA controlled even after the neighborhood is all done.)

    Cliff,

I don't understand why the community must pay more for these speedbumps to be installed and maintained (if I'm reading this right - the cost would be separate from the monthly HOA dues?).

Do I pay more when the playground equipment near my house is repaired? Do I pay more when the pool around the corner gets new pool chairs? Do I pay more when new trees are placed in the ground on the other side of Broadlands?

We're talking about normal maintanenace and upgrades. We should not have to pay 'extra' for something like this. It should come out of the normal HOA dues.

Speed bumps don't work. Some of the prime offenders are giant SUVs who wont even slow down for them. I'd rather see speed cameras.

What Cliff was talking about is by paying more is if a private street (one not maintined by VDOT) wants to have speed bumps installed the that street, and that street only will have to pay extra for it. It is more expensive difficult to plow streets with speed bumps and thus they are subject to more wear and tear then just the general street thus causing the homeowners on that street to incur the cost. This is also why 75% of the residents on that street need to approve them. that street would just have a different amount for their HOA dues just as the town homes are different then the single family and the single family on private streets are different thatn those on VDOt maintained streets. the other things do come out of your normal HOA dues and this would too we would just have a new catagory on assesments townhomes on speed bump streets or single families on private streets with speed bumps. It all gets very confusing after a while

I've noticed signs throughout Ashburn that the speeding fines on certain roads have increased to $200. Maybe we can post the same type of signs on the roads that are having these problems. I know my street is "Drag race" central and its not always teenagers. Someone posted earlier that we should post license plate numbers on this forum to notify everyone of the offenders and maybe that would deter them.

i'm not sure who Homer is taking to in his response about flaming too, but the street I live on is Chickaocan Trail and there are a lot of speeding cars that use it.

    Settle down, Homer.

You may not agree with one or more posts by a particular Member, but there is no reason to start your own "flame war" against every post by that person. Attacks like these are one of the reasons the forums were so unpleasant during the "chris et al." era.

Fair enough, but you were not attacked by flynnibus in this thread. You deleted the posts...end of issue (I understand --- it's late in the week, after all. Only 1 day to the weekend! :)).
