It's grilling time again, but don't want to pay the mega $$ for Omaha Steaks even though they are the best. Anyone know a good place to buy some steaks (filets, etc) that match O.S. quality? We tried Safeway, but their filets were not that great.

Partlow's Market (http://www.partlowsmarket.com/), at 20702 Ashburn Rd, Ashburn, has a great selection of high quality meats and seafood. We got some NY strips from there a couple of months ago that were awesome. They certainly are not cheap (I think we paid around $15/pound), but they were in a completely different class than the meat you can get at the local supermarkets.

Anyone tried Wegman's butcher shop? I would guess that the quality of their meats is better than that of Giant/Safeway.

Weggies meat is way better than anything around here except for maybe Wholefoods. I usually get the flank steak and even for a tougher cut of meat it was smooth like butter. Plus the price is nice!

Yeah, Costco is good too and the price is much better than Wegmans. You usually get two flanks in the package for around the price of one.

Thanks for this information. I do not eat much beef but this is very helpful b/c my husband loves steak and says stuff like "I NEED MEAT!" I will def check out the "meat" at Costco.
Speaking of grilling. Do all of you use gas grills? I am looking at possibly buying a charcoal grill. I like charcoal... Anyone have any opinions on gas vs charcoal??

I agree that Costco does have great flank steak at a good price.

I recently sacrificed the convenience of our gas grill for the flavor of our new weber charcoal grill. Well worth the extra work. A perfect way to cook flank steak.

Now, that's a debate that will rage for a long time, ever see "King of the Hill"? I use propane for convenience. I flavor w/ marinades. Charcoal does add that smoky flavor but it's more of an art than propane and takes some practice.

Ive had wegmanns and costco steaks.
costco wins. Eventhough I did enjoy picking my unwrapped steak out at wegmanns, and I hate getting in and out of costco (what a nightmare), the costco steak did taste better.
Charcoal grill always tastes the best, but I forgo the taste to the faster and cleaner setup of the gas grill. I can be done cooking using the gas grill by the time the charcoal one is ready to start cooking....

I'm with Homer. I have a propane grill from Barbeques Galore (their "Turbo Select" line). I love it, but I have also been tempted to get a Weber charcoal grill for certain occasions.

I think that charcoal provides a unique taste, but with good marinades (e.g, Stubbs chicken/pork/beef marinades), you can still grill great-tasting meats on propane that rival the taste of charcoal.

Charcoal rules if you have a charcoal chimney starter...it drops heat time significantly. Just don't use any of that Kingsford or Matchlight crap and never use lighter fluid (or the aforementioned brands with fluid built in). It's best to go with natural hardwood charcoal rather than the stuff you can buy at the store.

If you can't get it at the store, where do you get it?

By 'the store' I mean wal-mart, grocery store, etc... You can get natural hardwood charcoal at trader joes, bbqs galore, and other specialty stores. Yo umay be able to get it at wal-mart, I've never bothered checking.

Charcoal has the better flavor. Natural lump charcoal even better! But, alas I too gave in to the gas grill convenience. However, I do use a smoke box in the grill and liquid smoke in my marinades which helps.

Grilling time again? You mean nobody grills in the winter here? We grill all year round...but then we're from Buffalo and the winters here are mild compared to what we're used to!

I grill in the winter. At least when there's not 2 ft of snow on the deck!

Of course we grill in the winter. Last year, I even shoveled my deck during and after the Nor'easter to make a path to my grill. Made a fire in my chimenea while I was shoveling and had a grand old time. Only thing missing was the Irish coffee...
