That's a problem. On my street one side is painted orange so you can only park on one side. People also think it's ok to stop on the exit ramp of claiborne and Greenway to run over the median into Starbucks and back. So self indulgent.

OK, I'm getting a little worried that this conversation has lasted more than four hours...just call the police. They'll check the tag number and owner. We just flagged a cop down who happened to be crusing in the neighborhood as we were curious about a car that hadn't moved for a few weeks. We live in the townhouses and someone in the single family homes behind us decided they wanted to keep their junker over at the townhouse parking lot. Good try. The cop went to their door and said move it or lose it....it was gone within an hour.

That would make me angry. But is that really a civil matter? I can't even get the cops to bust someone who had a band in their back yard complete w/ amps and electric guitars b/c there is no noise ordinance. Cops told me the HOA had to handle it.

If the car would have come up as being involved in a crime, etc., it would have become a civil matter. I think the cop did it as a favor...I'm sure he approached the neighbor in a much nicer tone than I may have suggested (or in a much nicer tone than I would have!)

There's a back yard with a band!? LET PARTY!!!! ;)

We had an issue with an abandoned car (stickers out of date) last year and I called Wes to see what we could do about it. I can't remember who he called (VDOT?), and then someone came out and put a notice on it (warning them that it would be towed if not moved). Then it was towed within the week.

I dont know about Loudoun but in Arlington, as long as it is a public street, a car can be parked for up to 30 days. Anymore and it's gone.

Longtimer has a point - there are rules in the convenants that were signed by all who have bought here that cover abandoned cars, trailers, RVs etc.

The best way to handle this is call Wes at the HOA, and he can have it checked out.

It wasn't abandoned now was it? It was a vehicle worth over 30K. This is the slippery slope. Start worrying about this stuff when the HOA can't even keep the dog owners in line.

2 pages of an abandoned car that wasn't, 4 pages of Safeway woes...

I hate to admit it but I miss Chris and all her other aliases! :)-))

Who said the vehicle this thread started about isn't abandoned? It still sits there unmoved. How does the value of the vehicle change that someone abandoned it? Have you never seen someone dump a stolen vehicle before?

According to SarasMom it was moved as of 6/25:

Maybe it was abandoned and then</u> stolen! :)

Better yet, maybe it was stolen, abandoned, and then stolen again! :D

I think the car I was refering to (a white chevy cavalier) is different than the one mentioned at the start of this thread. Sorry if I caused any confusion!

The problem is that with a vehicle, you have it sitting in an open area, with tags that can be used to trace it. With dog owners, the only way to catch them is to walk by the location where the dog is in the middle of their squat, watching it finish its business, then see if the owner will just walk away from the mess with you standing there.

In all cases, the HOA relies on the honesty and integrity of the owners; whether of house, car or dog, to abide by the covenants they signed. If the owner has neither, then all we can do is rely on others to pass on word of the problem, and see if it can be solved.

True, but the dog issue is much greater than the amount of cars that may or may not be abandoned. Lots of dogs around and they poo every day unlike the car(s) that just sit there.

Plus you can't trust everyone to have the communities interest at heart. All too often with HOA those w/o power in real life gravitate towards the HOA like moths to a flame in order to gain the power to make everyone's life a living nightmare. The less silly rules the better. Sure keep your house maintained but don't start sweating the small stuff. (One dog - small stuff, several hundred * 365/yr large pile)

What do people who visit our community for the first time (maybe shopping for a new home) notice first, abandoned vehicles in our streets, or piles of poop in the common areas?

Don't get me wrong, the poop issue is a big one; I have personally told dog owners on a few occaisons to clean up after their dog. But look at the big picture; when abandoned cars start appearing on our side streets, those get noticed much more quickly. Since I moved here 1998, I have noticed a slow increase in the number of abandoned cars on Vestals Gap... In fact, there's an old burgundy car there right now that hasn't moved in 3 weeks. Same spot that another vehicle was 'dumped' for over 8 weeks...

I've lived here for four years and never saw a TRULY abandoned vehicle. If a vehicle is parked long term who cares as long as it's not blocking anything, on a public street and not a junk pile in flames. They way this post is going you'd think we live in Newark.

Plus, as insane as the housing market is here no one is not going to buy b/c of an SUV parked long term. Broadlands is hot!

Homer, the cars that Mr. Linux are talking about were not SUVs. One was a wrecked hoopty with expired tags, expired inspection sticker and expired county sticker. I doubt it was even driveable. The current one sitting on Vestals is a burgandy (trans am maybe?) with license tags sitting on the dashboard. The tags are still current on this one. The thing that makes it so noticable is that it's parked facing the wrong way on the side of the street - makes it really stick out.

Is that on Vestals on the Demott side of Claiborne? I noticed that it was facing the wrong way which is a ticketable offense. This is the area I was talking about where the cars don't fit in the garage so they park em on the street. I got no problem w/ getting rid w/ of junkers. I'm just afraid this will be used to crack down on the residents on stupid stuff. Broadlands HOA is pretty good for now but all it takes is a few folks to make this a bad place to live.
