Honestly, I figured nothing could or would be done due to cost and I am fine with that.

I am just venting because we are going to do swimming lessons at Summerbrook for our son this year and I am dreading the "probable" cold water (to me anyways).

a simple solution to the cold pool is to get your child a neoprene suit (think scuba suit) I saw a couple children at the pool with them on the other day. One slight bonus is that neoprene is bouyant, so that may help the child to learn to swim/float.

As far as heating the pool. Personally I think any extra money would be better spent elsewhere. While adding a pool heater would be a one-time cost, the upkeep fuel (electric or gas) would be ongoing. It may also affect the lifguard contract, since the pool manager would have to be knowledgable in monitoring the unit. All this for something that will only be used 3 months of the year.

That's funny I could have sworn we were talking about a fund raiser, and not having or asking the HOA to foot a bill. It was only asked if it were feasbible.

The second part of your post makes a good point.

why not stick a thermometer in the pool for a few weeks and see what the temp really is (get rid of the subjective) I grew up swimming in springs. 72degrees year round. that's warm in the autumn and frigid in the summer!

Trying to retrofit may be an issue, not to mention the initial cost of a heater. Electric costs around 8K, and is 3 to 4 times the cost of gas to run. Gas costs around 20K, and is cheaper to run than electric, but you're still talking alot of BTUs.

Figure initial outlay of 20 to 30K for gas installation, 20K for electric. Then about 1 to 2K a month for gas, 3 to 6K a month for electric. Possibly costing 6K to 18k for the summer.

That's going to be one heck of a fundraiser.

I'm told that the blanket method wouldn't be suitable in our situation due to insurance reasons and people breaking into the pools, etc.

And if you're talking about solar panels, I've seen backyard pools with solar heaters that take up one side of a roof. Summerbrook is 2 to 3 times as large as a backyard pool. Trying to locate the panels where they would not detract or be unsightly to adjacent homeowers would be a project onto itself.

Would it be possible to get thermometers in the pools and then as part of the lifeguards duty each hour they could record the temperature in the logbook for the pool?

This would be a simple and accurate way to get a record of how cold the pools really are.

I agree. If it's more than anecdotal that Summerbrooke is colder than the others, perhaps at least swimming lessons could be held elsewhere. I didn't sign up after a neighbor said the pool was so cold her child didn't enjoy the lessons there.

It already has solar heating -- the sun warns the pool water. If the water isn't warm enough for anyone, don't swim in the pool...

Just an FYI, went to the Summerbrook pool yesterday & the Southern Walk pool today and I didn't feel a big difference in temperature. Both were very comfortable.
