We moved into SW towards the end of February. We loved the neighborhood as well as the foresight of the developers/HOA/neighbors to put in the doggie stations throughout. However over the past few weeks while walking our dog (and picking up after him!) we have been appalled at the amount of poop along the sidewalks and commonways. Unfortunately, we have not actually seen anyone fail to pick up after their pooch so we have not been able to talk one on one. So, what can we do? What can be done? This is just plain gross! [xx(] I hesitate to take my children out with me when I walk the dog for fear that their energetic feet will find a pile -- the odds are good with the number of piles out there especially along Village Drive.

might not be dogs, we have tons of Deer Poop in our back yard. I have actually seen up to 3 deer in my backyard one evening. I live off of Larchmont.

If it's along a path, it's probably dog crap.

There is a definite difference between the two. Deer droppings are round pellet type. Dog poop looks like....well... dog poop.

I see people letting their dogs poop as they please all the time (I live off Tumbletree- the Village Dr. extension). In fact, I've had poop in my side/backyard. I don't understand the audacity of some people.

Watch out especially for the area near the parking for the Miller and Smith model homes. It's a "minefield" as I heard one dog owner state, as he let his dog poop without picking it up.

I've watched dogs poop on the path many times and the owners not pick it up. Mainly when I see this it's younger children walking the animals. I rarely see and adult leave the pile. It's unfortunate because it's really nasty. I feel sorry for all the peoples homes that have tons of poop in front of it.

I know it's not fasionable to carry a plastic bag or pooper scooper but I do it. I can say that even my last home was not this bad. The walking paths at my old home were for the most part clean. I don't understand why people in this area can't clean up after their animals

People in this area make a lot of cash and generally feel entitled. That's why you see so much selfishness such as this and the traffic stuff.

Brim and L0stS0ul, this is not an issue with just this area - it's an issue everywhere! Not just limited to Broadlands. And it has absolutely nothing to do with how much money someone makes.

The bottom line is that *everyone* should pick up after themselves - albeit dog poop, kids toys, their trash, etc.

I agree- the dog poop is a real problem. Is there any kind of fine as there is in some areas?

I was just stating that at my last home in cascades where there was a walking path that went thru 3 different subdivisions there was never this much poop as I have seen in one block here. I don't know what it is about this area but it seems to be worse here in the broadlands. Maybe more people own dogs in the broadlands I don't know. Of course it happens everywhere. It's worse here though!

I agree - it DOES seem to be worse here. We lived in Ashburn Farm before moving to Broadlands and never saw this much poop there as there is here. [xx(]

OK, so we all agree that:
    1) deer and dog poop look different
    2) although there are a lot of deer in our area, it is the dog poop that is more of an issue
    3) many neighbors are bothered by it

So, what now? How do we educate parents that their children are not "cleaning up" after their dogs? How do we encourage everyone to clean up after their dogs? Anyone interested in setting a good example and helping to clean up our walkways so that we can start the spring off with a truly clean slate? Perhaps a poop-pick-up party this Saturday morning?

I'll be happy to carry my heavy duty long neck pooper scooper with me on my walks and pick up any (non-fresh) poops that I see. I will only be grossed out by my own dog thank you :) I will only get the ones that are close to the walking path because I don't like going onto other peoples property to far but I'll pick up what I can

If you see me walking with my scooper feel free to join in :) I only walk down ridgeway though so someone else will have to hit the side streets

If you do it then what's the incentive/motivation for already inconsiderate folks to clean it up themselves. They've already shown they really don't care about others, do you think they'll feel guilty if they see someone is cleaning it up for them?

Yah, let's not do anything to make our community a better place.

Now that you mention it, maybe we shouldn't have those "Earth Days" when we pick up trash all around the community, either. It won't stop the litterbugs. I'd rather look at the trash.

Hey, let's get rid of police services, too. I mean, criminals still commit crimes, right? What good are they???

guilt would be good -- but maybe just a positive role model -- or maybe if there are enough of us out there with our scoopers it might cause some discussions and peer pressure. Either way, it needs to be done -- spring is coming and all of us will want to be able to walk through and enjoy our neighborhood poop-free! We will work on Village Drive from Claiborne. The more, the merrier! :)

I'd rather clean it up then let it stay there. I'm using the path and really it's not that big of a deal to clean it up. As I said I have a heavy duty long neck pooper scooper. I'd rather pick it up than have my dog pick it up if you know what I mean. I'd rather not deal with some of those nasty dog issues associated with that. There is a lot more that can happen than just bad breath...

I am a dog lover. There is a dog who lives in our pack. The humans pick up after the canine. We also clean up after other dogs and people who leave trash in various locations. Most human behavior can be modified with some form of rewards and punishment if needed. This is a tough one. Depsite covering miles every day with my canine friend, I have not seen anyone leave dog waste around. Hence, how can we respond? Yet, clearly many are doing this. It is a minority, however. I suggest that all responible dog walkers take advantage of the fact that they are walking around with bags or some device and clean up after the less responsible.

dcdavis, I too also live off of tumbletree and have seen numerous people who live further up village drive walk their dogs to the model home parking area. But I am most disgusted by the neighbor with the rottweiler who lets the dog go across the street off leash while he stands in his driveway. I also wonder what all these people will do once construction starts on that lot.
