what's up with the bright red LED price sign? you can see it miles away. i'm thinking planes heading into dulles might try to refuel there also. great idea for safeway... airline refueling.

That LED sign is horrible. It does look like runway lighting. Pretty tacky.

I can understand the reason for it, its much easier to change the price using an electronic sign, but I don't believe it needs to be as garish as it is. You can see it (although not make out the numbers) halfway down Broadlands Blvd coming from the school board offices.

If the Safeway District Mgr is reading, could you tone it down a bit ??

I agree, it's bright but you cant see what the numbers are.

Reminds me of that Seinfeld episode with the Kenny Rogers Chicken sign outside Kramer's window. Too funny!!

IMO with the price of gas the way it is today the 3 or 6 cents makes no difference to me. Shortly after the 7-11 by the Food Lion opened up I did get gas there for $1.78, which was pretty descent. Of course since then, overall the price of gas went up across the board. I do believe that it will be more competitive, but for now it seems to be about the same anywhere you go to fill up in Ashburn. (Although the Exxons are slighlty higher).
As for the "Neon Like" gas price sign, I'm not even going to say what it reminds me of. Pity the people that live across the street. It has to go.

I see that the addition of the Safeway Gas has NOT affected the Sunoco's prices.

    Today's report:
Safeway: $1.919 (Before the 3-cent discount. With the discount - $1.889
    Sunoco: $1.969

I guess as long as people are willing to pay for it, they will charge it...

    Hi folks-
At the HOA meeting a few weeks ago, I promised to follow up on the Safeway Gas sign brightness. I called Safeway directly, but received no response. I then contacted Saul Centers. Here is a letter they sent Safeway:

    SAFEWAY INC.
    5918 Stoneridge Mall Road
    Pleasanton, CA 94588-3229
    Attn: Real Estate Law

    Regarding: Safeway Gas Station
Broadlands Village Shopping Center, Ashburn, VA

    Dear Tenant:

Landlord has received a complaint from Broadlands Homeowners Association concerning the brightness of the illuminated gasoline monument sign. The red LED numbers are very bright and very distracting during the night. Please have your sign company review the sign and tone down or dim the numbers. I have attached a photo of the sign taken during daylight hours showing the brightness. Please notify Landlord within thirty (30) days of receipt of this notice of your remedy. Your help in this matter is appreciated.

Let's hope it does some good!! I would appreciate it if someone would post something here if/when they notice a difference.
    Thanks.

Just an observation while running errands today:
Safeway Gas - 1.86 (before 3 cent discount)
Exxon Mobil by Giant in Ashburn Farm - 1.91
Exxon Mobil by Food Lion - 1.93
Shell by Ice House - 1.93

Rather than get upset by a few cents a gallon, or a few bucks per fill-up...try taking a look at your next paycheck and see the $$$ flying out of your pocket!

then again, it all adds up...

Just bought gas at Safeway at 4:30, prices up to 1.91 for regular (without the card). I guess the stories I saw today about huge price increases in the next week may come true

Atlantic Tanning had their van (with an airbrushed tartlet in a bikini) parked on the curb where there may or may not be a sidewalk going into Phase II. <sarcasm> That's a really attractive fixture to our neighborhood </sarcasm>

Safeway gas is now 2.00 (w/card) or 2.03 without for regular as of this morning. THis happens to be the exact same price as the exxon up in Ashburn Village. Looks like it was fun having a few cents cheaper gas while it lasted....

Actually, I still find that it's cheaper than the 7-11 & other gas station (Mobil?) by the Food Lion. Safeway premium is $2.18 but at the other two it's $2.20+
