I went to the SunTrust in the Safeway yesterday and was floored to hear that they are remodeling the store. Not trying to start another thread about the number of grocery stores, etc. but this really surprised me. The ladies at the bank said that they are coming in with jackhammers, etc. soon - so not a minor remodel. Not seeing how this is necessarily going to help them...

A cashier told a customer in front of me that they are making room for a lot more organic products.

I'd like to see more cashiers in the lanes, and unless they install self-checkouts, at least one express lane should ALWAYS be open.

I don't understand the complaints about lines at this store.

Worst I've ever waited is like 3 people. Yes, at rush times there are lines, but they are not long. I've had worst line experiences at Wegmans almost everytime and HT if you don't use the self-checkout lines. I like the customer service the best at HT but don't like their limited selection in several items I get. Wegman I find to be the cheapest, but their selection of certain items is even more limited and is farther away.

And yes, avoid the Safeway store at all costs right now. They originally only had a few aisles pulled down, but now most of the store is and they are not stocking well because of it.

I love self-checkout. Except for one thing - if I'm going to reduce the store's head count by using hte self checkout lane - I want a discount! 10% is not unreasonable.

Considering grocery chains live on like a 3% margin... yeah it is :)

Plus many items are high theft or low margin compared to others.

I just wish they still taught people how to bag! And Safeway's excuse of putting the bags on that stupid belt (when there are no baggers) instead of in your cart is absurd and insulting. Put the bags in the cart!

I agree with this - especially when they move on to another customer while you are still trying to get your bags off the belt and in to your cart.

I don't have that problem when I bring my Wegmans bags in. It forces them to work with the bag more, and then they put it into the cart.

not to mention how much expired stuff they put on "sale"! my kid couldn't find a bag of cheetos that hadn't expired July 1. produce is rarely good- NEVER as good as Wegmans. I've had stank herbs from there that weren't expired- just likely improperly heated and cooled to the point that they turned GROSS.

mngmnt is screwed up there- no WAY should a safeway IN a community with so much opprotunity be soooo bad.

Has anyone complained to the Safeway home headquarters about the store in Broadlands? It seems to me that a lot of people are disatisfied with it. I've found expired food at all the grocery stores to be honest. Just bought a gallon of milk at Giant....the expiration date was well enough ahead of time and guess what??? It was spoiled. And I can't tell you the number of times I bought bannanas from HT and the just wouldn't ripen....at all..hard as rocks....

OH Brother! What I do is investigate and get names and keep working my way to the top...usually DOES bring results.

if i were a paid consumer advocate i would definitely have the time to do that. but since it's not a monopoly and i have choices in this matter, i moved on.

i HAVE been known to do exactly what you suggested, and it does pay off most of the time!

I like Safeway for the convenience - I can walk there and also for the 20 cent discount when you spend $50. Every saving helps with the gas!! I buy all my produce at Wegmans, since I work close by to them.

i went to safeway for some quick non perishables the other day and the final total was $46.48. I almost spent $4 more on unnecessary junk to get the discount, but then i realized i would spend $4 to save $2.72!!! Kinda funny.

but if you DO actually have $50 buck to spend there- the additional discount IS nice. :)

I was there this evening (a Sunday) and as usual there were two lines open and about 20 people standing in line. They can renovate all they want, but I can't see that store ever adding to its customer base as long as they skimp on open checkout lines.

Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed that HT's produce section is going downhill, too? I'm finding myself going to Wegman's a LOT more often than I used to. I'll battle the traffic for fresher produce.

MY personal problem at Wegman's is that I can't just bop in and out for a few items. I always wander and spend WAY more than I really needed to just because they have such cool stuff. Not a good money-saving technique.

For several months we've found that HT's produce just isn't worth it. Even on things that seem ok in the store we'll find that they just go bad much quicker than expected. We'll buy a few items from Giant but for the most part try to get as much as we can on trips to either Wegman's or Whole Foods. It's certainly not ideal having to drive past so many other stores to get to either of those. As far as the cool stuff, spend some time making a solid list before you leave home. If it's not on the list, don't put it in the cart.

IT's sad too, HT used to have a great selection of produce. I would goto the new giant for meat and HT for produce...now neither place has anything of excitement...so I also goto wegmans and Costco for my meat.

guess whose good...? BLOOM. got Rainier (Golden) cherries for $4.99/lb instead of SAFEWAY'S $6.99/lb, AND they were sweeter and more plump frpm Bloom. got apples, grapes- delish. and CHEAPER.

I WISH I had more time- I would put together a staple shopping list with brands, just a SMALL one, and buy the EXACT same things at Wegmans, Teet, Bloom and Giant. I would LOVE to compare on any given day the price differences.

I wouldn't bother with Safeway- they are in big trouble here- even some of the CANNED goods are expiring on the shelves!
