We should have the mother of all parades when they finally install the lights. By then we'll all be grandparents and we can blow kazoos from our wheelchairs.

Doesn't look like Snow's help did any good, not that I'm surprised!

what is going on at broadlands & claiborne???

there has been a large white truck sitting there for a week or so now. i guess it is some type of drilling rig that will be used to on the rock that is allegedly holding up the traffic light installation. the equipment operators must be in short supply vs. the physical equipment if the contractor can afford to park their asset for a weeks time or more.

i watched in agony last night as cars were stopped at each corner waiting for the other car to proceed forward and group of young people were also attempting to cross the intersection on foot. i was wondering what was going to happen next... a minor collision or a pedestrian being struck. everything worked out ok after a minute or so of "who has the right if way?" was played by all.

is there anything that concerned residents could do to push this project forward or do we need to wait for a traffic related fatality at that intersection to get some attention?

    morning rant over.

    Last known update info:

Claiborne & Broadlands: The white truck is the primary contractor's vehicle. Supposedly all the footing locations have been dug and they're waiting for the poles FWIW ... this is the light that is being paid for by the developers.

Claiboren & Waxpool: All the footings are installed except for the rock, waiting for delivery of the poles. The BoS Public Safety committee finally authorized release of the money on this county installed light, however, the installation was given the OK by the BoS this past summer.

FWIW ... this light was always scheduled as a county installed light, the developer had already proffered the costs to the county years ago. If I remember right, our former BoS Supervisor did alot to get this pushed up, our current Supervisor kept it going.

Well if they still have rock to deal with. The lights will not operate no matter what else has been done.

Sounds like to me the powers out there are telling you all anything to get rid of you all. :)

I say it will be next year where the rock is still a problem for the lights to operate.

I wonder why they just don't just use another design. There are such things as wires and cameras :) The light in front of my office uses cameras now, no inground loops.

obviously I don't have the insight into the cost of one vs another.. but considering there is really no visable reason to not run induction loops in the pavement at my office, they chose to install cameras. So it can't be that much more expensive. My guess is it has to do with how many 'inputs' you want. my intersection is 4 way, but two of the sides are one lane only. Just speculation..

Check today's Post for an article about the $$ they wasted installing those light cameras on Rt. 7 and now they're going back to induction loops. The cameras are blinded by sun light, don't work if the intersections are too wide, don't work well at night, etc.

Originally should have been Terrabrook ... but now its Van Metre who is paying the bills for putting in Broadlands/Claiborne. FWIW .. they're at the mercy of this company too .. there aren't that many in this area that do this sort of work unfortunately.

Quick question to all ... since there's usually a long backup at Broadlands Blvd, have many people started coming in the 'back way', off Ryan/Wynridge ??

From the Greenway, I've been taking the Belmont Ridge exit and then in to Broadlands through the Truro Parish entrance. Coming south on Belmont Ridge is not a problem. Typical time from where I would exit at Claiborne to my house is five minutes.

I also exit at Belmont Ridge and follow that north to Stubble/Gloucester Parkway in order to get to the Ashburn Village Sports Pavillion to pick up my kid from swim team practice in the evenings. It is quicker than fighting the four way stops at the Shellhorn/Ashburn Village Parkway exit or taking Loudoun County Parkway onto Waxpool.

Having Claiborne go right through to Gloucester and further to Rt. 7 will be nice (except for the increased traffic through Broadlands). Just be aware that there is a four way stop at Claiborne/Gloucester now and there does not appear to be any current work to install a traffic light.

The number of four way stops on these commuter routes is ridiculous. Either development should slow down to keep pace with the infrastructure or the developers should be paying for overtime to get the infrastructure built. We all hear the pounding of nails to build the houses during weekends and holidays, but I haven't seen much overtime on our two lights.

    Jim-

About the Claiborne/Gloucester intersection: the developer already has his plans in to VDOT for approval for this traffic light. Now, it's just getting the approval from VDOT and then installation (which, as we've seen, can take months).

Hopefully this will happen much more efficiently than the Claiborne/Broadlands light...

FWIW ... the contractor was working on drilling something at the Claiborne/Broadlands intersection this afternoon. Looks like, on one corner at least, the channel for the sensor loops through the curbing was being drilled.

Here's an update from the developer on the Claiborne/Broadlands Blvd lights:

Update for everyone on signals. I am not sure if everyone has seen
Brothers working again. They are cutting in the loop detectors
yesterday and today. They should be here until the lights are
completed. They encountered rock on a couple of the foundations that
the have a special drill coming in the end of next week. I do not have
a date from them in regard on when they will be up. I will forward that to everyone once I know. Thanks.

Another signals update, people who were at the Developers Update would have heard this direct. As it was, I had a conflict with my business and had to head to a customer,so I missed it too.

However, Wes told me this on Thursday:

The contactor for the lights at both Broadlands Blvd and Waxpool has said that the lights will be up and flashing by December 17th.

However, they did not give a year so I can't be certain they meant 2005. [:p]

They were using a drilling rig at the 321 Ashland corner of Broadlands/Claiborne today. Does the HOA get the oil rights if they hit oil while drilling?

Depends on which side they strike oil at. If it was across the street where they were drilling, no problem. But by 321 Ashland, that's on Commercial Owners Association land. :(

I live in Southern Walk, so I am SO happy that Wynridge is open. But it seems that there are more and more people on it every day...
