yea, I am with ya on that... but when I first looked at the cut, I thought it looked more like someone pulled them apart, not a clean cut as if done with scissors etc. I will take a closer look for gnaw marks... this has me intrigued enough to play detective. All those interested, bring over your CSI kits after 5:00 and we can "go over" the scene of the crime

Maybe it was two teenage squirrels playing tug a war. Please let us know what you find out.

There's quite a bit of drag racing along Broadlands Boulevard, and I don't think just teenagers are the culprits. The drivers look older to me. Regardless, if teenagers are caught, they should lose their licenses (for a period of time) AND the parents should suffer the same fate. That would put a stop to it FAST.

Actually, given the frequency of the drag racing, I am surprised that people would EVER actually walk along the road given the hazard. I see families with strollers out -- generally on the road, not the sidewalk! I can't imagine taking such a risk with a kid.

The bigger problem, in my opinion, is the driving behavior on the Greenway in the evening. Not a night goes by without an idiot on a cell-phone barreling down the road at 90 mph while talking, generally with a kid or two in the backseat. We complain about teenagers, and this is how we are raising them!

I just recently moved to the area and was thinking to myself today how differently people drive here then where I was before... And I was all of 15 minutes away before...

A lot nicer cars... I must admit... but it seems people around here take the power to their head. People compete with other "nice" cars. My dog is bigger then your dog..... blah blah.

    Shame.

gotta love it! looks like you're noticing what a wonderful stuck up area we live in. people around here need to get over themselves...but so long as they keep building starbucks--the better-than-everyone yuppies will come. i thought about putting a beat up pick up truck on cinderblocks in my driveway...

Please don't feel you must remain living in such a horrible neighborhood with pathetic neighbors. You are free to go.

No way...i'd rather live in this depreciating monster of a townhouse and whine about the yuppies than move back to day-laborer central. i didn't say the neighbors were pathetic--just made a general statement that people need to get over themselves. but you get that everywhere. "but enough about me...let's talk about me."

With the remark about "day-laborer central," it sounds like you are turning your nose up at people who built your "depreciating monster of a townhouse." We can't have gorgeous homes without manual labor to build them.

i don't begrudge the workers or how they were hired. Atleast they're willing to work--i'll give them that!!! But i also would hope that Van Metre didn't drive a van down to herndon to pick up their crew for the day.

I was in the midst of the whole day-laborer controversy when we lived down in Herndon. As much as i try to stay non-political, i don't agree with helping illegal immigrants, even if they are willing to do the work cheaper. It's called "illegal" for a reason. But i digress...that's for a different forum.

So....back to these bad teenagers...

ok, follow-up report. I did not notice what I would have called "gnaw" marks on the wire of the lights. I think the main reason why this string was targeted was that it is easy access next to the house on the retaining wall. And I am a little more suspicions of "bad teenagers" doing this because I also confirmed from a neighbor 2 doors down - the same thing happened to him a couple of days ago as well... one string ripped that turned off half his lights... oh well. Merry Christmas and happy New Year.

I had the displeasure of meeting a couple of "bad teens" today. I was sitting in my bedroom watching the football game on TV when I heard a strange noise outside (the back of our house overlooks Claiborne). Saw two teens walking the center median, and one was in the northbound lane trying to break a beer bottle in the road -- it took two tries LOL. They then proceeded to watch as cars ran over the broken glass, laughing. Were they hoping for the excitement of a tire blowout and a car losing control?

They started walking north, so I went downstairs, out the back door, and picked up the largest pieces of the glass. It took a few 100 yards, but I eventually caught up with them. At first they denied doing it, but after I presented them with the glass and a littany of details about where they were and what they were doing at the time (and the visible smoke coming out of my ears and the wild, crazy look on my face) they fessed up! They claimed they didn't live in Broadlands, were here visiting friends, and were walking to the Safeway. I asked them what they were thinking -- no answer. I explained to them that a lot of these incidents have been happening lately, and that they should know residents were waching out for this kind of behaviour. I also told them that if I ever saw them doing something like this again, I would call the cops. I actually thought the one who broke the bottle was going to cry, lip quivering, yes sir, no sir, all that stuff.

So what could I really have done if I wanted to? Could I actually have called the police? What would some of you had done?

Sorry for the long post. I'm still a little jacked up.

    Call the police next time.

It is admirable that you confronted the teens but why put yourself at risk, however remotely possible. Who knows what frame of mind any miscreants may be in. Are drugs involved? Who knows!

Oh, and I would have probably confronted them too! :D

    Polar,

First of all, thank you for taking the time and effort to do something about it. Definitely applaud you, especially when there was a great football game on at the time :)

A few other possible things one could do in that situation:

    1. Make the kids come back and clean up their mess. Obviously have to watch with traffic, sue-happy people, etc. but personal accountability is a good thing.

    2. Call their parents and make them come pick the kids up. Forces the parents to be inconvenienced, and hopefully really PO'd.

    3. Call the police (especially if the parents don't sound too concerned or the kids are uncooperative.

Make sure the kids don't know which house is yours! It's always tough to know what to do in the moment because your adrenaline is running high, but your neighbors (and car tires) appreciate you making the effort.

Give them the choice.. pony up your parent's number.. or I'll make a guess which number it is.. oops.. that's the sheriff's number!

Tell the parents they can come get the kids or you'll call the sheriff. If the kids bolt. Follow.

I doubt that would work. They know you can't force them to stay there until the cops come and they know they're probably faster on foot. And if they bolt, how far do you chase them and to what end? The cops won't be able to find you when they show up and if you manage to catch up to them, you can't restrain them.

Kids today don't fear adults/authority...way back when, yah, they would have coughed up their parent's names but there's no fear nowadays. :(

Sad part is, you could have called the cops but the cops would never have come. The response time is pitiful around here. Had a house alarm and it too the cops more than an hour and a half to make it to our house.
