One of our neighbors has a plow attachment for his pickup truck and he usually does our street regardless of the other plows (I don't know who is supposed to do our street here in Ashburn Village). It's nice and helpful for everyone. He's co-owner of Ultra Turf landscaping so I'll give him a plug here since he's so nice to his neighbors.

People need to be courteous neighbors and shovel their sidewalks, too. Seriously, if your 19 year old son can get out and build a snowman, he can shovel the short sidewalk in front of your house. I'm just sayin. The dogwalkers will appreciate it.

Not to mention those of us who will be walking our small children to the bus stop tomorrow morning.

When you get turned over you will be turned over to VDOT (I am almost positive High View is a VDOT street) so the chances are you will get even less plowing done then. I am glad our street is not on a hill but we are VDOT and they have not even come close to plowing us. With all the budgetary cuts I will be very surprised if we see anything.

Staci - VDOT was out last night past 11PM plowing Ridgeway/Claiborne.

All in all I pleased with the response time from the HOA & VDOT, with yesterday's snow fall.

VDOT will do the main streets ... ie Ridgeway / Wynridge, Claiborne, Demott, Broadlands Blvd, maybe even Vestals and Elzey but not too much with the interior ones.

Though as I typed this VDOT did come down my street spraying sand. Well at least he came down as far as my house and then decided to turn around. Anyone looking for sand for a sand box I have plenty on the road in front of my house!!!!! Looks like someone was trying to create a beach

I think your street goes to VDOT, not the HOA.

Cliff, I live on Windy Pine Ct. in Southern Walk and the snow plows never hit our street. It's treacherous just taking our kids to the bus stop this morning. I believe our street is still the responsibility of the HOA - to whom do we speak to get a snow plow out here and make sure this gets addressed in future snow storms?

I leave on Ellzey and this happens every time it snows: the townhouses on Bankbarn are plowed and the driver comes out of Bankbarn and plows the snow right up to the opposite curb and we have to go back out and shovel because the snow is again on the sidewalk.

Also something interesting yesterday. I was out talking to a nieghbor and the plow machine comes up the path behind the townhouses, turns right and does the sidewalk up the street to the corner then goes across the street, plows the sidewalk in front of the corner house (this is not a common area), lifts his blade and goes out on the road. Can we get our sidewalk plowed by the HOA?

Call the HOA Office. 703-729-9704. This street should be either the Developer or VDOT. I do not believe it is a private street that the HOA will ever maintain.

Afraid I have to disagree with you there Cliff! Ted does a great job but is not overzealous. He's been doing my neighborhood since I've lived there and his priority is to make it safe...I've never felt that he was just "making work".

Maybe he sees kids standing there sometimes so he thinks it's a bus stop and wants to be helpful? Just guessing.

I think back to last year's dumping of tons of salt for a light, overnight dusting that was completely melted and dry by noon the next day.
Not a wise expenditure of limited HOA funds.

Excellent observation vacliff. Folks need to get a thicker skin around here when dealing with the white stuff. For the most part, main roads and thoroughfares are clean and safe. It's only the short distance out of neighborhoods that can take time and care to get through. I'd prefer to see money saved on short lasting snow storms and be available for truly necessary uses. I do think snow contractors take advantage of the opportunity and the paranoia. It's a lot easier to spread chemicals and material on a road with a couple inches of snow then in a half foot or so. If they get a chance they're going to take it. It's also easier on their equipment, less breakdowns. Easier money to make. Someone not directly in line for a pay check needs to make the call on whether material needs to be put onto the roads.

It only takes a little practice and patience and folks can deal with the neighborhood challenge. Heck, maybe folks from Michigan can start holding driving classes for those in need.

And if you had followed up with Ted you would have come to realize this was not him dumping salt for "a light snow"... It was because one of the trucks he used was sitting in that location waiting to be maneuvered. However unlike Ted's normal trucks this one was unable to completely turn off their salt spreader. By sitting in 1 location waiting for the snow the salt slowly sprayed over hours. After Ted realized the imperfections of this spreader he did not charge us for the used salt and he makes sure that he only has trucks that totally shut off sit idled. Sounds like a very responsible contractor to me.
