    Chsalas and others--

Krystal Hamburgers (similar to White Castle but located in the Southeast and based out of Tennessee) are great!

    www.krystal.com (Krystal's site/info.)

Sonic's Drive-In--Sonic's is expanding to Fredericksburg, VA areas and to Fairfax within 2 years. Closest location is Massaponax, VA. Great burgers, shakes, and ice cream desserts, etc. Sonic's is also in Winchester and Fredericksburg, VA with NEW locations according to their web site.

    www.sonicdrivein.com (Sonic Drive-In's site/info.)

Sonny's Real Pit BBQ is from Florida and has restaurants in Southeast areas up to North Carolina (Charlotte/Concord Mills areas). Great southern BBQ with "fixins".

    www.sonnysbbq.com (Sonny's BBQ site/info.)

Piccadilly Cafeteria is a great "old-fashioned" cafeteria restaurant. Closest location is Richmond, VA. Great southern food and desserts. Great prices like when kids meals are under $2.00. Based in the Southeast also.

    www.piccadilly.com (Piccadilly Cafeteria's site/info.)

All the above are great Southern-style chains. Makes me homesick--:(

My vote early on was for in and out burger - no you can also add in Whatabuger - had one in Texas in May and it was very close to In and out! And of course there is nothing on earth like the venerable Vienna Inn! Haven't been back forever but their chili mac is to die for!

Well Redon, that'd be due to the fact that these actually taste like the best restraunant burgers - real ones not chain food.

i dunno- i lived in FL and have had whatburger, sonic, white castle, (in NYC) krystal and sonnys- in and out is the only one i don't know. but NONE of the aforementioned come close to foster in my book- maybe Sonny's but it's been too long- i'd have to have another one. the others reminded me of a junior varsity mickey d's burger, ick

but to eat his own- guess that's why we alreaedy are glutted with burger joints... something to please everyone.

I've never known a person with a nut allergy...I only hear about it on Dateline or 20/20 or something =) Are you allergic? I thought I heard something about possibly nut allergies being related to roasting nuts. What I heard was that in other countries where they don't roast nuts they don't have the same % of allergy sufferers. *shrug*

I doubt that a store will stop selling stuff w/ nuts for such a small percentage of customers.... unless the owner or somebody has an allergy I guess.

Yep in fact it wasn't until the last decade or so that it really popped. Never did I hear of these kind of food allergies - except for shellfish, and also Bees (not food I know) when I was growing up...

Ok and so we all like burgers...and steak! Um my vote for that was the great ones I had growing up NW of Chicago. Man they were yummy and the fat tasteed like nothing else. Now most steaks are dry and stringy and grisly, so we always get rib-eyes.

Nut allergies are more common than you think. The problem with nut a shellfish allergies is that you are NEVER sure of what type of reaction you will have. It may be "hives" or an anaphylaxis (sp) response and your throat closes. There is no guarantee of the same reaction so you may start with hives and then procede to the anaphylaxis reaction which is why it is so important with these types of allergies to make sure there is no exposure.

Last time I checked the FDA regulations state the equipment that processes nuts "has to be visbly clean" in order to not put a label candy, cookies, etc. For example, you buy ginger snap cookies and you child has a reaction and your child has a reaction. The package does not state the product has nuts or was processed on equipment with nuts. You call the manufacturer and speak to an Executive VP. They explain the above rule and you ask them wouldn't you rather make sure that no child could be harmed by there not being a label. The response was repeating the same message as before. So you ask the VP a question. My toilet is visbly clean would you eat off of it? The reponse was "NO, there are germs and things on it that you can't see!" after that you ask "Do you see my point now?" Then the response is "Well, we will take that into consideration"

I could go on and on, but I hope this helps you and others to understand a little more about this issue.

    Enjoy!

one of my kids has a nut allergy. i think a nut free shop would do really well.

HOW TO PROTECT THE LIVES OF FRIENDS WHO HAVE FOOD ALLERGIES:
    -Never Take Food Allergies Lightly
-Don't Share Food With Friends Who Have Food Allergies
    -Wash Hands After Eating
-Ask What Your Friends Are Allergic To And Help Them Avoid It
-If A Friend Who Has Food Allergies Becomes Ill, Get Help Immediately!

An estimated 12 million people have food allergies and there is no cure. Strict avoidance is the only way to prevent a reaction, which can be caused by even small amounts of a food allergen. Convincing others that food allergy is real is often the most challenging part of living with the condition.

If you are reading this right now I hope you will all take a few minutes to learn a little about food allergies- it can happen to anyone. You, as responsible friends, neighbors and citizens should be aware of the peanut butter that may be left smeared on your child's hand when they go to play on the playground. Just be aware of it and try to keep everyone safe by cleaning their hands and face.

By the way, there is a great peanut butter substitute at harris teeter called "sunbutter" and it is batch tested for peanut traces and has NO PEANUT in it- get a jar! Just try it! It's great!!

The Soy Bean butter is just as good as PB. The Sunflower is good also, my kids eat them both. The last time I check the labels, it said that is was NOT processed on equipment used for peanuts. I will try to check the labels later tonight and let you know.

Also, for those of you who get ice cream from DQ, Milwaukee, Maggie Moos etc please be very careful about letting a nut allergy person eat anything there. I have watched the servers behind the counter mix the spoons up when dishing the toppings. Also, when they are wiping the counters everything is not leaving the counter top and your cone could be contaminated.

OK, I mis-typed! The Soy Bean butter from Trader Joe's say it is made in a peanut/tree nut free facility. (Bought last month) But, I will check the label before next purchase to be sure.

The Sunbutter comes from SuperTarget, NOT Trader Joe's! It also says made in a nut free facility.

I have not read the label of Trader Joe's Sunbutter so I can not confirm it is nut free. sorry if this was misleading to someone. But as always please read the label first.

    Hope this helps.

    Thunderchild, Sunny, and others--

We think the best peanut free nut butter is I.M. Healthy Soynut Butter. Their products are gluten free also. All the grocers stock this product. The nut butters are not limited to just one type. Plain and Crunchy flavors. We make soynut butter cookies all the time and great on PB&J sandwiches.

    www.soynutbutter.com (I.M. Healthy's site/info.)

I.M. Healthy also offers online ordering. Great place to order soynut products. Try soynuts themselves.

Also, you do NOT have to be limited to soynut butter or peanut butter for nut butter flavors. There are almond nut butter, cashew nut butter, and many more varieties.

Our United Foods Buying Club carries over 25 varieties and flavors of nut products, nut butters, etc. I can provide a FREE catalog if interested. Just PM me.

Also, check out my thread under "Area Restaurants..." my post called "Misc. Allergy/Gluten Free..." for recipes and other Nutritional info on allergies, diets, etc.

    Have a good day--

    Foodie

so i started this thread almost 2 years ago, and reading back through it, guess what...? almost everything we all said was missing is STILL missing. only NOW even more is gone.

yesterday all i wanted was a cozy cafe with wifi to sit in and do some computer work without the distractions of home- a good latte, and relaxing atmosphere... doesn't exist in Ashburn. Yes, I could drive to Shoes Cup and Cork in Leesburg and get it, but I really just wanted someplace closer to home since my time was limited.

Aaaall these empty store fronts, aaaall of these repeated businesses (thai and chinese resturants, burger joints, etc.,) but not a single, comfy locally owned independent cafe.

I know the way these plazas are set up add to making it more difficult for an independent biz to succeed, but I sure hope something changes soon so this town doesn't continue to be a revolving door of failed independent bizzes.

So 2 years later Broadlands- what do YOU think is still missing here? My updated list:

    POLLO A LA BRASA JOINT
    COZY CAFE
    KOREAN BBQ
    ARCADE
ADULTS ONLY BISTRO with small plates, great drink menu and live jazz combos (I can dream can't I???)

    your thoughts, neighbors...?
