I'm all for a prison and a nuclear power plant...anything that creates jobs and tax revenue for the county is a good thing by me. They can put it in my backyard. I'm no Snob. I dont think I should be treated better than other neighborhoods because I have more money than they do.

HCA is also a for profit, publicly owned company, so you cant fault them for wanting to put a hospital in a place that makes them and thier shareholders money. Why would you ask them to to do otherwise? They also create jobs and economies for the county.

I also dont think its fair to say that other municipalities of VA "hate" us for being NOVA. Tidewater (as a former resident you know) is actually a larger tax base and larger population with the same issues we have (did you read the papers down there too?). The Virginia-Pilot and Ledger Star were always full of transportation and other politics of Richmond stories.

Finally, I think what has been suggested is that the other hospitals you mention do not either support a full range of services or cannot handle the load of a growing population over the long term. You seem to dance around the services issue and view a hosptial as a cookie cutter facility as if all hospitals are alike. They arent. Services are needed today, not in 2010. We cant wait till then, Even 2008 is a stretch. Lets hope you dont require services before then.

And yes,VA is pro-business, it is also Right to work and predominantly republican - those things go hand in hand a lot. Its neither a criticism nor a boast, just a statistical fact.

It's not about a Class issue it's about what makes sense. A mental ward accross from the playground and schoolboard when it could easliy be moved doesn't make sense.

We are not a business entity and should not be treated like some company to be raided for profit. Do you want Healhcare run like Enron?

I've lived in Norfolk too. You wont see the bias in the media. Its embedded in the politics and people who have lived in VA for generations. It may not be visible to you but its there. Your experience w/ the SCC is the tip of the iceberg. Tidewater may have been the top tax bas but it wont be for ever. This area will eclipse it if it has not done so already. Tidewater has the same problems we do and receives the same shaft we get from Richmond. If you don't think so check out all those nice new empty highways circling Richmond now.

I don't see Fairfax scrambling around adding new hospitals b/c of the load Loudoun is putting on it. My doctor is at Fairfax Inova which is only about 20 minutes away. There is hospital within five miles of here. If everyone must have a Hospital nect door what about Purcilleville, and the towns out west? This stance is alarmist and I don't see how Loudoun suddenly needs a mental ward in a residential area. I've said before I would support the hospital with out. I have no idea wether hospitals are cookie cutter. I don't care. I don't think this area is appropriate for mental health care. There is a greater need for Maternity here then Mental and we had to fight to get any Maternity in the BRMC.

Pro-business does not mean Anti-Resident. And neither have anything to do with Right to Work. Why do we have zoning if not to protect the rights of the citizens?

As a previous posted said, why should the survey be the end of it? How many more families have moved in knowing the hospital is a possibility? Does their buying here imply that they are for the hospital? Who the heck knows? A survey is nothing more than a generalization. Unless there is a 100% survey, who can say what side is the majority.

Apply that to the last Presidential Election! Bush still won even though he had less votes and at less then 60% of USA voted.

Good point. Let's apply your analogy: even though the "pro" side got less votes than the "anti" side, and less than 60% of Broadlands voted, then that must mean that...the pro-hospital side wins! Yeah! :)

Pats_fan, you're right. The pro-hospital side did get less votes and did "win"! (per Broadlands newsletter) The HOA UNANIMOUSLY supports HCA's hospital in Broadlands!

One more point. Blame HCA for our lack of a third hospital within a few minutes drive (existing hospitals in Landsdowne and Reston). If HCA had picked a more appropriate site, the hospital would already be under construction.

I'm willing to bet that Donna and Neil would take exception to this comment.

I'm sure they'll understand that I was referring to the former Broadlands newsletter since I stated "per Broadlands newsletter."

Thanks for the doc! This is the Needs assessment for the County's Comprehensive General Plan and is not some biased document but rather a Government Commissioned study. The entity that did the study is a regional commission (http://www.novaregion.org/hsa.htm).

    One point of interest:

Thanks for the link. I've been looking for an impartial discussion of county hospital issues. Is there any reason to believe that this is anything other than an objective and impartial report?

"Was the letter a summons, did they order you to the meeting....what did you do wrong, this certainly doesn't sound good.."

LOL ... I believe they are trying to cover their booties and send the letters via registered mail so nobody can claim they didn't know about the meeting. What did I do wrong ... hmm ... I bought a home very close to where the hospital will be, unfortunately.

Actually you bought a home very close to a commercial development zone that was on the Broadlands plan from day one. That is the real issue. I bet you would be just as upset if they were building seven 5 story office buildings in your back yard as per the original plan. The office buildings would have been alot more obtrusive with virtually all the existing trees removed. How is the hospital worse? At least with the hospital we have been able to have input.

Homer...you forgot the last two sentences of the statement re: additional expenses for the Sheriff's office for security:
"No estimate has been provided of increased costs, but the additional costs have been noted. The Sheriff’s Office has indicated that there has been little additional effect from having the Cornwall Street emergency department."
With your concern over the mental health beds, have you contacted Loudoun Hospital's Cornwall facility to determine the effect on the community? They have adult mental health beds.

Some other interesting pieces of the report...
"Although the Dulles planning subarea is projected to grow from 18,000 to 68,000 by 2020, the data in Table 8 show that there are only about 13 patients a day from that area now. Even with rapid population growth projected along Route 50, the Dulles and Southwest planning subareas are projected to generate only about 75 patients a day by 2020."
"There are substantial advantages to locating hospitals along or just off major thoroughfares. Being along a major highway can be beneficial to the hospital and also to the broader community. It reduces travel time, which enhances accessibility and also aids the fire and rescue teams that bring patients to the hospital and need to return to their base quickly."
"A definition of a health center is needed before judgments can be made on locations of such centers. The types, purposes, and definitions of health centers that would be logical for communities within Loudoun County do not appear to apply to Washington Dulles International Airport."

Umm ... no. When we looked at lots we asked the sales person what would be on the other side of Broadlands. She told us "there will be more homes there". This was MY first experience in building a home, and I learned one big thing ... if I ever do it again the first words out of my mouth when I enter that sales office will be "stop smiling, I've done this before". I did not know to check future development plans, so I didn't do it. Is this my own fault? Sure, shouldn't trust a sales person. She also told us that the wooded areas between homes could not be disturbed because they are "wetlands", what a crock of doodoo that was. First thing that happened after we moved in was that the owners of those areas weeded out all the natural brush and made it look nice and clean ... gah. So I paid a hefty lot premium for the view of a natural area and it disappeared, and across the street we will have a commercial area.

Yes, my own fault, could have done more research. Guess I need to be less trusting and more *****y when I spend money.

I have no idea about Cornwall. Is that a residential neighborhood the size of Broadlands?

The quote below supports your quote above but puts it into perspective by saying "eye towards the future". Which paired with the other qoute about not jeopardizing the existing hospital.

    Now the next point...

Great! WorldComm campus is directly accessible by the toll road!
I think this statement (which I already posted) supercedes the one above:

Agreed! That's what the Comprehensive Plan is supposed to do!

Here's a good one as to why we don't need it in Broadlands:

Missed those big maps and tables saying 'commercial' huh? :)

lessons learned. I'm sure most of us could write a book about dealing with developers :)

I don't really get all this talk about a "plan". As I understand it, sometime after a proposed hospital showed up on the maps where "office" was indicated, the state rejected the hospital. Then, after eliminating a chunk of adult mental health beds, the new proposal was approved by the state and is awaiting county action, which appears to be leaning against it. The way I see it, there was never really a "plan", just some controversial proposals. No one on this forum, even to this day, has any idea whether there will be a hospital on that site. So to imply that someone is somehow getting what they deserve for not viewing "the plan" before making his buying decision isn't fair and wasn't even possible.
