SoxFan - I have been asking that very same question for a couple of months now... "If not HCA now, who and when?

Many people focus of HCA's past theivery. I do not like that myself but they are willing to build here NOW (complete circe 2008) and it is not HCA that I want here, it is another hospital providing additional services that we need.

I sure hope the "Sox" you are refering to are the Red ones!

Yours truly - another member of the "Nation"

Thanks for the attempt Thunder. Maybe we can get Donna to post the text on her website. In fact, that would be a way to drive traffic to that site, and read angles on this issue.

I did have a problem with Donna's mailing, it was guised from a member of the HOA board and quite frankly when sending something out stating you are a board member and thanking the people that voted for you - you should consider that not everyone has the same view as you on the hospital point but maybe agree with you on other community issues. I felt that your opinion of something should not get clouded in with your office position especially since there is no "real" majority in who if for or against the hospital. If the majority of broadlands residents were for the hospital and needed the board to reflect this view point in meetings with BRMC, would you be able to do that? After your mailing I have serious doubts. Not a personal attack on you, just a concern.

    Homer-
It is accurate. BRMC is approved for 40 juvenole/adolescent beds ONLY. That being said, if the hospital is built, they can at some time in the future request more mental health beds for adolescent/junile or adult beds. They would have to go through the application process with the state to get them approved.
    T8erman-
    Thank you.
hberg- It would be accurate to represent that the results of the survey, which did show that of the responses received, more people did not support it than those that did. When taken in the context of the entire community, the survey clearly did not indicate whether the majority of the residents did or did not support it since the majority of the community (60%) did not respond.

But we've seen what the SCC cares for NoVA residents opinions. They only care about one thing, money. If it's the SCC decision HCA can do whatever it wants when it gets here.

    T8erman,

I didn't know there were any other kind of "Sox"'s! Go Red!!!

    Homer,

What is SCC? I would think there has to be some kind of authority monitoring all hospitals activities. There must be some kind of accountability as to what they are doing and if they are doing what they are licensed for.

The SCC is the State Corporation Commission. They're the ones who gave the Greenway TRIP corporation the free pass to our wallets and will allow Dominion Power to clear cut the trees on the W&OD trail. They may not have anything to do w/ the Hospital but it is indicitive of Richmond's attitude towards this area.

    Cliff,

You are one arrogant fellow. What makes you think I need more education on this issue? Because I don't happen to agree with you? Sorry, but I would bet my life I know a lot more about it than you do, so give it a rest. And I'm glad you finally read up on the proposal, so you can stop giving ridiculous answers like that one you posted a few months back about the mental health beds coming here as a result of the Winchester facilty closing down. And considering how gung ho you are on this project, I would have thought by now you could have at least responded to my several requests to show how the breakdown of services matches up with the county's dire needs for a hospital.

    hberg--

Donna's mailing might be put in better context for you if you take a look at the May 2004 Broadlands newsletter, page 9.

A portion of the July 14th letter from Tony Raker, Community Relations Director, Loudoun Healthcare. Editorial comment: I wonder if they will be busing ambulatory patients over to support their cause.

"There is a picnic at Cornwall beginning at 4:00 pm on Monday along with continual shuttle bus service from our parking lot to the County Building. You won't be stuck at the meeting! I know it is hard to find time what with work and family -but your presence at this meeting is critical. Many have said they will come -will you?"

    Brooks5-
Well I am glad you claim to be well versed in mental health care. When I asked about it you never responded and until now, given any indication you have any background or knowledge about adolescent/juvenile mental health. In my opinion, you simply used inflammatory words about mental health care designed to scare people. In fact, after having visited the facility and seen the services provided and after talking to the Doctors there, I believe some of your comments to be flat out wrong. I guess you can call that "arrogant" because, based on your posts about the issue, it did not appear to me you are well informed on the issue. Sorry. So, now that you have enlightened me to the fact that you are informed on the issue, and still oppose those services here, that's fine. I respect that. I won't persue the issue any further.
You seem to have misread my comment a while back about Winchester closing down mental health services. A poster questioned whether this area was appropriate for a mental health care facility. My comment was that since Winchester stopped providing services, there are none from Winchester to Arlington. The Ashburn area is about midway. To me, that would indicate an appropriate location. You need to go back and read it. I in no way implied the beds were coming here because of Winchester.
You also have missed the post that specifically listed the breakdown in services in response to your request. Take a few minutes a scroll the hospital posts and you'll find it. I'll give you a hint: "MSFLYNN" listed it.
It's also interesting that LHC agrees that some of the additional services that BRMC will bring to the county are needed. Example: LHC has recently put in a request to perform cardiac catheterizations, something that the BRMC will perform.
Since you don't like it when I presume to know about your knowledge base, what SPECIFICALLY do you want answered? I can get you the phone numbers and you can ask them yourself. That way, you won't have to wait for my "arrogant" responses.

That's not a good reason for it to be in Broadlands when it could have been in Worldcomm campus. The fact is that if HCA would have just bought and built there there would be no issue. Why did they choose Broadlands? Not out of the goodness of their heart. Not becuase we need a hospital within one mile. But because most people in this town have Health insurance and can afford it.

If LCH can fiddle with the COPN then why can't we get that whole area downzoned into something that really is beneficial to the way Broadlands was set up to be? Like a park, dog park, small blding commercial?

My wife reminded me of something the other day. When we saw "office" on the map way back in 1999 we both thought "flat one story warehouse converted into office" b/c that is what we see alot of here. In fact all the offices I have worked in so far have only been one story. And none of them, have been in a residential area. Why is Broadlands "blessed" with this backwards zoning while the Village and the rest aren't?

You hit a few of the reasons why I asked who funded the letter. It looks like Cliff said earlier that the HOA did not, but I still haven't seen an answer (or did I just miss it?) as to whether it was Donna, or LHI, or someone else.

That thought goes with the community newsletter too since there is no clear consensus should it be blatantly biased towards HCA?

I am a Broadlands resident of six years. I have serious concerns NOT about having a hospital here, but about not having quality healthcare in our area. Here are facts based on my experiences that have developed into my opinion about a new hospital here in Broadlands.
I have had a few good experiences at our nearest hospital, and I have also had some alarming, thought provoking experiences as well.

    1. In severe pain, I spent several (8-10) hrs. in a hard chair at the E.R. of our local hospital. After finally bieng admitted, shortly after that I was then moved into the hallway to wait for surgery. I had the privledge of watching and just barely being missed by projectile vomiting produced by a young man who had injested too many drugs. My doctor arrived from Reston hospital to convey how much he wished I had gone to Reston hospital in the first place where I would not have been in a waiting room for several hrs. in tremendous pain.

    2. I was admitted to our local hopsital on a different occasion in need of surgery. I was told the anesthesialogist team did not come in on weekends unless it was clearly life threatening. The solution was to keep me in the hospital until surgery Mon. administering strong pain medicine to me while I waited the 2 days. We (my husband and I) discharged me. The willing doctor who also had privledges at Reston hospital, performed the surgery there within a few hrs.
    3. On another occasion I needed medical attention, we chose to drive the extra minutes to Reston Hopital. This was after going to our local hospital and seeing a very overcrowded waiting room. I begged to go to Reston. I was admitted to Reston hospital comfortably on pain medicine within 20 min. awaiting surgery.
This is not about which hospital would be better, it is about having a choice. In an emergency situation the ambulance goes to the nearest hospital. We do NOT have a choice. My children have a Pediatrician that was chosen based on the Hospital they worked out of. This was Reston Hospital----My choice. All of this is based on real facts, my personal experiences.

I never had a bad experience at Loudon Hospital. I had major reconstructive surgery a little over a year ago at Fair Oaks Hospital, because that is the hospital my oral surgeon has privileges in. I was released on a Wednesday, went home, started having breathing difficulties a few hours later. My husband took me to Loudoun Hospital because it is very close, not knowing anything about the hospital. I was triaged, seen right away, told that I had pneumonia and had to stay. I was also in severe pain from the surgery, they made me comfortable as soon as they were able to, moved me to my room. On Christmas day my IV went bad and they were unable to find another vein. An anestiologist came in (again, christmas day) and took care of me.

This year my daughter has been sick quite a lot, and having taken HER to the ER there we never had to wait more than an hour (which is great in an ER)

I'm sure we all had good and bad experiences in any hospital we have ever been to. Because of my experiences I don't buy 8-10 hours waiting in the Loudoun ER nor the "no anesthisiologist on weekends", I'm sorry. I am not all for the hospital, nor am I all against it, but coming up with emotional stories about how horrible Loudoun Hospital is is not the way to convince me either way. Solid research is what I am looking for. What the hospital will do to my property values is quite honestly my main concern.

In response I just want to make one thing clear, yes, this is emotional however, they are facts and if you go back and read them you will see I also stated I had a few good experiences at Loudoun as well. You not buying my 8 to 10 hr. wait is your certainly your choice, I felt it important to state why I felt another hospital, another CHOICE would be an asset would be a valid reason to be on a forum. Emotional or not.
