Does your teenage driver use Truro Parish to get to Briar Woods?

I don't normally drive my child to school but did this morning. Maybe this happens all the time, but it was the first I'd seen of it and I go this way out of Broadlands alot.

As I was waiting to make the left turn from Truro Parish on to Belmont Ridge, 2 different cars full of teenagers (and driven by teenagers) made a left turn on to Belmont Ridge from the right lane of Truro Parish. This was done at the same time as the person in the left lane was turning left on to Belmont Ridge. Belmont Ridge is dangerous enough without simultaneous left turns. It was around 8:45 and the left turn lane was only backed up 5 cars deep, so there was still plenty of time to get to school.

I used the opportunity to tell my permit driving child if I ever found out he made this manuever his license would be mine for a long time. I wish I would have paid more attention to the cars or I'd post the details. Everyone whose child drives this way to BWHS may want to have a quick conversation with their child before someone get hurt in an accident.

I drive my son to school a couple of days per week. I'm glad you posted jsut for the heads up. I cannot believe how dangerous that is. Is there anyway to send an alert to LC Sheriff and have a car stationed to watch traffic for a few mornings. I have not seen your experience but now I'll be on the lookout. What I have seen is the right lane going straight into the baseball parking lot in order to U turn and then turn right on Belmont Ridge. Although this is perfectly legal, I've seen cars cross over Belmont Ridge when I clearly would not have chosen too. Also, when in the right lane they slowly inch out into the intersection until it is clear on the right and thereby blocking any ability for the left hand turn driver to be able to see which only makes the left turn lane longer. Anyone heard of a possibility of a light going in there? Why did they put one at Broadlands Blvd and not at Truro Parish???:screwy:

To add to that....as the parent of a permit driver......drivers under the age of 18 are only allowed to have one other non family member in the car with them. If the cars were full of other teenagers, chances are, they are in danger of getting their licenses taken away. Now I know the driver could be over 18, but if they are still in high school, they probably are not.

That's not exactly accurate. Virginia law prohibits driving with more that one non-family passenger less than 18 years old until the holder has held a provisional license for one year, and no more than three non-family passengers less than 18 years old until age 18.

I've seen the same maneuver trying to make the left turn from Croson onto Belmont Ridge. It's a popular tactic among the high school set, apparently.

As part of the proffers from Broadlands, the Developer was required to pay for four-laning Belmont Ridge Rd from Broadlands Blvd to the Greenway. They also were required to install the traffic light.
The Broadlands Developer was also required to provide a new 2-lane segment of Belmont Ridge from Broadlands Blvd to Truro Parish. The money for the other two lanes, and a light at Truro Parish/Belmont Ridge, is to come from proffers from the other communities on the west side of Belmont Ridge. I talked with county transportation a few weeks ago, and they are doing the work to see if there is enough money to get this section completed. Should know the answer fairly soon.

The Croson intersection is getting seriously out of control. I go that way to pick my girls up from daycare (in Brambleton) and have not waited LESS than 10 minutes to make that left turn any time this week. (That's 10 left turns, 10 minutes+ each time.)

I determined today that it's faster to turn right from Croson onto Belmont Ridge, turn left at the Winnie the Pooh church, do a circle in their lot and right back onto Belmont Ridge. Passing Croson I saw that I would still have been about 8th in line to make the left turn. So from Milford I really need to go up Claiborne to Broadlands Blvd and take my left there to get the light onto Belmont, I guess.

Either Truro Parish or Croson REALLY needs a light - probably both. Any chance that Windermere or the Alexander's...whatever it is...community is proffered for a light at Croson?

Not sure about the status of a light at Croson until Belmont Ridge is widened to 4 lanes. At that time, a light would most likely be required.
The county is moving forward with getting the money to finally complete the missing link of Claiborne Parkway between Croson and Ryan roads.

I think it is ready for a light now. It is a nightmare trying to turn left onto Belmont Ridge during rush hour and when sports teams have practices/games at Brambleton Fields or need to get to Briar Woods. I witness cars turning left being very aggressive to make the turn.

It is also a combustible situation when you have the car up front waiting for 900 car lengths each way before turning, thus frustrating the drivers behind.

That intersection gave me a heart attack when my son was driving to school in 2009. And I hated that he had to drive on Belmont Ridge. When he was a freshman, the first year the school opened, they were talking about widening Belmont Ridge, so I was hoping it would be complete before he had to drive. At one point, they started, but stopped. So I can imagine how bad it is now. It's an accident waiting to happen.

Croson definitely needs a light BADLY....It takes me FOREVER to get onto Belmont Ridge from the left lane...Its just a matter of time before someone has an accident trying to be aggressive in taking a left turn because it takes too frickin' long to get onto Belmont Ridge road. When is the COUNTY going to HELP???

I have a permit driver in high school and have instructed my child NOT to ever turn left onto Belmont Ridge Road until there is a red light. Our route to the high school from Ridgeway includes making a right onto Claiborne, a left onto Croson, a right through Belle Terra neighborhood, a right onto Ryan and with the new back entrance to the high school, a right onto North Star.

It would be really cool if the people traveling on BR would slow down and allow a car or two to get onto the road...

You are kidding me! That is a great road to be learning how to drive on! I remember when I was in driving school and another driver crossed over the yellow line into my lane literally causing me to run me off the road destroying both of my tires and nearly hitting the tree.

Why do people think Crosen is so much worse then Blnds Blvd? there is no additional inlet or outlet of traffic between those two roads on Belmont.

Sorry, you are correct. When I was writing that, Turo Parish is actually what I meant, not Broadlands Blvd.

My point being.. what makes Crosen any more 'dangerous' or different then Turo Parish?
