What is going on with the grass medians along Claiborne Parkway and Waxpool Road?! The grass has not been cut in weeks and the weeds in these areas are TALL. If this was my yard, I would have been cited from the HOA. I understand they applied weed control, but those areas had not been cut for weeks prior to the application and now another week has gone by without cutting the grass.

The grass median, or should I say weed median, along Broadlands Boulevard across from the shopping center looks HIDEOUS! Additionally the intersection of Claiborne Parkway and Wynridge Drive looks AWFUL! The hay that was put down in these areas just caused more weeds to grow. Are there plans to clean up these areas and possibly put down some sod?!

These unkept areas are detracting from the beauty of Broadlands. The HOA appears to be in violation of their own rules!

Completely agree with this post! I would be very angry if I were trying to sell my house the way the neighborhood currently looks. We pay into an HOA with the understanding that the common areas will be kept up nicely, which at minimum should be: grass cut and weeds removed. We personally pay every week to have our yard cut and edged, and spend our own time weeding and mulching. What's the point of all this home maintenance when the rest of the neighborhood looks like crap?!? Please don't tell me it's to cut down on costs. The few bucks we're saving on hoa fees is offset by the lowered home values in a neighborhood with foot tall weeds. Lastly, I've already called and talked to the HOA at least a week ago, and the grass is still uncut.

Having lived here for over 20 years and seeing the medians uncut in an untimely fashion, maybe, a handful of times and almost always due to to much rain.... RELAX! They will be cut when the weed "control" has run its course.

And, of course, the HOA regularly gets complaints from residents about the fact that we even use weed control.

I think your statement is a bit over-exaggerated. I don't see tall weeds as a pervasive problem in this median. What I do see is scorched earth from this very warm summer. The challenge of the traffic light installation project has compounded the effects of nature. I live near here and see HLS out there all the time trying to keep up with it.

Cliff, it's not that weed control is used, rather, it's the aversion to the type of toxins being sprayed by HLS. There are much safer options available, and contrary to popular belief, organic is NOT more expensive especially when you weigh in long term costs to humans and the environment.

Nicest catch-all ever.. emotional, with consequences so vague and remote they can't be quantified. So it makes a great pitch, until you ask someone to actually pay the delta, right now.. then you are asking them to pay for the future... now.

We live in a toxic environment - not emotional so give it a rest already. You can choose to have your pesticide residue coffee and bowel cancer bacon every morning, for all I care. And your damn right if they don't pay the delta now they will pay in the future, but I don't expect many people make that correlation until they fall seriously ill.

To address a few of the concerns, I received some information from HLS.

We are cutting the road way starting today so by the end of this week all road way common area will be cut. The weed they think that they see is not weed but a grass call Dulles grass. The only way we can control this is by killing the grass and re-seeding these area. Also the island along Broadlands Blvd is not part of Broadlands HOA common area. This belong to the commercial association and is on a different turf program than the HOA.
The netting along Wynderidge and Claiborne is only there temporarily and will be removed after the turf fill in or when Van Metre gets off bond with VDOT, but this is being done by VM, not by the HOA.

Also, Broadlands HOA send out information about why the area had not been mowed via the Broadlands Blast. Please sign up if you would like updates about things and don't want to contact the HOA directly.

This 'break' in lawn services actually came at a perfect time. Yeah, my yard was starting to look a little shaggy having not been mowed for ~3 weeks, but its been so hot and dry out I was glad they didn't put extra stress on the grass.
