Our mailbox lock is very damaged and we cannot open it. It's a community mailbox. Does the HOA repair that, or the USPS? We just moved in, and want to be able to get our mail, but getting a hold of the Postal Service is difficult. Thanks!

    Firstly, welcome to the neighborhood.

Regarding your question, we went through this last year. My husband contacted both the HOA and USPS and learned that it is the homeowner's responsibility to change the lock. My husband said he can provide the link where he ordered the lock, if you'd like. I'll post it later.

Best wishes in your new home!

The communal post boxes are USPS property. I don't think residents are authorized to change the lock. You must go in person to the USPS office and request a lock change. Bring proof of residency. It costs $30. If it was damaged they might waive it (don't know, ask).

You can do this at the Broadlands PO, during their wacky hours, however, you must pick up the new keys at the Dulles PO. You'll get three keys. It takes them a few days to get it changed.
