We have a porch on our house and there are several cracks very unattractive running through the moulding as the house settles. I was told that to fix them would be futile because they just recrack. Is this true and can someone recommend how to fix them?

it wouldnt be a bad idea to replace it with PVC mouldings... that way you'll never have to deal with splitting or much maintenance again... tart lumber has alot of moulding... and HD/Lowes has a smaller selection, albeit mostly a bit cheaper.

My house did the same thing. In some locations I replaced the damaged areas with PVC moulding, and in others I patched it. Eventually, in the patched areas the crack reappeared. Not surprising, as the crack was caused by tension, and patching doesn't remove the tension.

The PVC stuff is fantastic. Cuts like wood, even can be router-ed like wood. As long as the surface is going to be painted, PVC is the only way to go. J.T. Hirst in Leesburg has an extensive selection of PVC material.

It is similar to Tart. It's been in Leesburg for years; started as a family run business; was recently sold to a larger entity, but the culture seems to have stayed the same.

The address is 41 Catoctin Circle S.E. It is located right behind the Sheriff's office. The Sheriff's office is right behind a mexican restaurant. The mexican restaurant is on the other side of Catoctin Circle from the shopping center Ben Franklins is in. A little hard to find, but you'll find good service there. I like going there because they tend to carry different brands than the box stores.
