The Technology Committee is working on sponsorships for our Flick in the Sticks events for this summer. One of our potential sponsors is a pizza delivery company. We are trying to determine the best option for our attendees and welcome your comments and discussion about what you think works best. It's the ultimate Dinner and a Movie.

    Currently, there are two options:

    1) The pizza company will set up a booth/tent on the Nature Center lawn (in the area we don't use for Flicks) and sell pizza by the slice and whole pizzas. They will sell pizza for about an hour before the movie starts. (let us know if you'd want them to sell during the movie).

    2) The pizza company will offer special carry out pricing on Flicks evenings (you have to pick it up from this Broadlands business).

The Technology Committee has been leaning toward option 2, as we have been trying to keep Flicks a totally free event for families. We know that having pizza for sale at the event could be distraction to family members. However, it does offer a nice convenience to have it right on premises. Either way, you're helping to support a Broadlands business.

Please post your thoughts and comments - if you think it's a good idea or a bad idea and why. Pizza is all we are considering right now, so please don't ask us to include your favorite restaurant. We will make a decision sometime next week so we can start to work things out with the pizza business.

Thanks for your input and for helping us make Flicks a fun, family event.

Don't forget, The Lion King on Saturday, June 16 at 8:30 pm.

Just a suggestion - you should probably add a "poll" to this thread. Not sure if it can be done now? Admins?

As far as my response - we really do not have a preference either way... though #1 definitely adds some convenience.

does the HOA get a cut of the proceeds for an on-site pizza vendor?

Nope. Just the convenience of them being right there. And a good deal for our residents, with reduced pricing.

If the HOA isn't receiving a financial benefit from them being there, I would not allow them to sell on-site.

Why? I generally agree with you on most topics, but that doesn't sound right to me. Unless some entity is receiving a cut, the people shall not have the convenience of a nearby service? Sounds like racketeering.

No, a vendor is getting a captive audience to sell their product. They are also using HOA property to do it. And to clarify, my response was only if they intend to set up at the event, not if they want to offer a "carryout special" at their store.
Sounds like a mutual benefit, not racketeering, to me.
And it doesn't have to be a "cut" of their sales. Maybe a vendor could sponsor the cost of the movie, drinks, and popcorn for that event.

well the mutual benefit would be the vendor taking the time, cost, and risk... of staying onsite to sell.. where residents get the advantage of hot food easily accessible.

It's not all upside for a vendor to setup onsite like that.

Personally, I would be against having a vendor onsite during the movie. I think what makes Flicks unique is how it revolves around families coming down and watching a movie together. I don't think it would be fair to some families to have a vendor on site selling their food and by extension, have their kids beg for pizza, etc. I believe most parents want a 'pressure free' activity, that they can attend with their kids without being subjected to x, y, z and spending money in order to avoid 'disappointment'. In my mind, you can compare it to one of those 'candy free' checkout lanes at a grocery store; I would rather have my kids want to attend because of the movie and hang out with their family, as opposed to wanting pizza, etc.

I'm totally for any business that would like to offer 'specials' to Flicks attendees, but only out of their place of business, not on site. If a pizza place wants to put together a special 'pizza package' (large pizza, drinks, etc) for a great price that folks can pickup on their way to the movie, go for it. In fact, I would encourage local businesses to do this. It would give them an avenue to sell their product, while giving families a choice as to how they want to spend their evening.

My whole attitude with Flicks in the Sticks is that we should keep as much of the 'commercial' aspect out of it and concentrate on the event itself and getting families to spend time together in a low stress, fun and safe setting. Parents shouldn't have to deal with "But mom/dad, I want some pizza too! Pleeeeeeeeeeeease! Pleeeeeeeease!". That's one reason that went into us NOT selling popcorn or drinks, but to give it away...

I would hazard a guess that most people will have already eaten dinner by the time the movie actually starts (8:30-8:45 PM).

Now, if Parallel wants to set up a Wine Bar during the movie, I would not vote against it! :D

I understand the convenience of having the vendor onsite, but I totally agree with Eric on this one. It's part of the fun of this event to come with the understanding that you can have a great time with your family and not have to spend anything. You've already paid through your HOA dues. [Note: Each movie costs each resident about 15ยข - up a bit from last year as we had to replace some aging equipment.]

Many families bring dinner - pizza, subs, etc. We were just curious if there was an avid audience for this. I think it's still a good idea to partner with a business to offer a carry-out special.

Agree, I'd rather have post-dinner treats at the movie, such as the popcorn normally provided. Most people will have eaten dinner and moved on to movie treats by the time the movie starts. A special promo would be a good way to get an easy dinner the night of.

Looks like many would be open to a take out deal. I'll work with the vendor to arrange a special price on carry out pizza. Thanks for the input. We'll see how this goes for this year's movies.
