We moved into a new construction in May, including hardwood floors across most of the first floor. We selected a fairly new type - an antique-wide board hickory hardwood. A few months after installation, we noticed cracks forming on some of the boards. They came and fixed about a dozen at our 3-month walkthru. A couple months later, we found nearly 30 boards with similar cracks. Van Metre called in the manufacturer who determined it was a product defect.

Given that nearly 1/4 of our floor was now being replaced (not toungue in groove - by chiseling and glueing), I told Van Metre that they should consider replacing the entire floor. They assured me the work would look like new, even glued. They came to do the work and, predictably, it's not like new. Several boards stick up slightly and others are creaky. I'm fearing that this will be a chronic issue with our floor - either continually noticing imperfections in their work or finding new board cracks.

It's a distressed floor, so none of this really detracts from the look, but we paid a lot of money for a new floor. We're getting a patchwork job. I'll probably raise hell during our 11-month walkthru. Just curious to know if anyone else has gone through this.

    Thanks

If it's a manufacturer admitted defect, they should replace your floor and bill the manufacturer...in my opinion.

The manufacturer paid for replacement of the specific defective boards - they won't redo the floor.

the 11 month is a great time to raise hell. Nothing is off limits....i figured i had them on the hook for another 30 days, so i blue taped every nail pop i could find. If one board sits higher than any other---tell them you want it replaced. you're right---these houses aren't cheap...and i would hope Van metre would attempt to maintain their perceived higher quality homes. Squeaky wheel gets the grease...keep calling them back.
