Have you ever wondered if wearing rubber gloves is doing enough to keep you, your family, and the environment safe while cleaning the house?

Just what are the Dangers of typical household cleaners and how do your cleaners rate for safety?

"When EWG released the Guide to Healthy Cleaning in 2012, some of our scores and findings surprised not only our viewers but us, too. Who knew Lysol made a product EWG can recommend, while many cleaning products marketed as “natural” or “green” don’t pass? We were also shocked to find out how common it is in the cleaning product industry to hide ingredient information from consumers."

We've rated more than 2,000 home cleaning products on the health risks posed by their ingredients and the transparency of their labels. We added nearly a hundred new products, including a whole new category: laundry pods. We've also included more information on allergens - including botanical oils that are known to trigger allergies.

Some of the new items in the database are from companies that asked to be included and whose products score well. That gives you more good choices.

We added new product categories to reflect the growing market for dish and laundry detergents packaged for single use, or "pods." Some of them score well, containing safer, well-disclosed ingredients. But others score poorly, with some worrisome ingredients and very poor disclosure on the label. (EWG had to use documents intended for worker safety protection to identify those ingredients!).

Every product listed is was given an overall grade based on numerous factors

    Asthma/Respiratory

    Skin Allergies &
    Irritation

    Developmental &
    Reproductive Toxicity

    Cancer

    Environment

But the safest and most economical way to clean is to use plain ole vinegar and water. It's non-toxic and safe for our drinking water, cuts down on throwaway plastics and the scent dissipates quickly, plus you'll save $$$.
