I have noticed in the last six months (since apartments, townhouses, new section of Longleaf opened) the amount of dog mess has increased by about 100%. Despite there being a doggie bin/bag station on a common area opposite my house - there are loads of dog droppings there - within 10 feet of the bags - how lazy can people get. I have two dogs and I would NEVER leave their mess for someone else to pick up or walk in. I don't know why these people think they have the right to not clean up after their dogs - are they lazy, squeamish (if so don't have a dog to begin with), or just plain stupid. When I see someone not picking up after their dog I usually take a bag to them and say I guess you forgot one of these.

I would love to have two of those doggie bag dispensers on my side property, and maybe a big sign that says "Dear dogs, please ask your owners clean up your poop" We have a big problem with dog mess on our side property, however I never catch anyone NOT picking up! I think it is really a sad situation. I don't know what to do about it. It seems that the small write up in the monthly news letter is not making any difference. I love dogs and cats but I do not like having poop in my yard.

My neighbor lets his dogs poop on my lawn (for some reason they don't poop on his!)... I think I should collect a big pile and put it on his doorstep or something. Maybe he'll get the point.

I did that when I had to collect my neighbors garbage from the common area after a dog got into since he doesn't use a can. They started being more carefull afterward.

Speaking of trashcans, we have several neighbors that ignore the rule about not leaving trashcans outside. Maybe we need to have a big front page article in the newsletter with big graphics of the top 10 rules that are abused in the Broadlands.

Boy - I can relate to your frustrations on the dog poop. We have a dog and wouldn't dream of not picking up his poop. It's bad enough when owners let their dogs poop in someone elses lawn or on common ground and doesn't pick it up, but I've seen several instances where they allow them to poop on the sidewalk!!!! UGH! I agree on the big front page article on the top 10 rules that are abused! I've seen neighbors put out their trash two days ahead of the scheduled pickup days - also abuse it by putting grass clipping in the trash.

Great idea about the top 10. I think majority of the people just don't realize they are breaking the rules.

I want to add my $.02 about inconsiderate dog owners. Equally as inconsiderate as those who don't pick up are those who ignore lease laws. Every day I see people walking their dogs leash in hand but unhooked. They obviously know they are supposed to use a leash but they are too lazy to do so. I have seen several instances where a dog runs up barking or jumping. The clueless owner stands there saying things like "oh he's really friendly" or "he growls a lot but never bites" Like that supposed to make it ok. I like dogs but an unknown dog approaching and barking can be intimidating to an adult, downright horrifying to a child. How many stories have we seen in the news about a dog that bites or mauls a child and the surprised owner states "he's never done that before". Even the friendliest dog can be unpredictable. That's why there are leash laws.

I recently heard a terrifying statistic (on the TODAY show for what it’s worth); 50% of ALL children will be bitten by a dog by the age of twelve. Please keep your dog on a leash!

It's just part of growing up. I say let kids live their lives and stop trying to protect them from every little thing (helmets, overuse of medicines/antibiotics, etc.,) It takes all the fun out of being a kid!

I'd venture to say that 90% of that 50% are bitten by their family dog anyways.

    Just my 0.02 :D ;)

An 90% of that 50% are doing something to the dog to provoke it!

Spoken like someone without children! I believe wearing a helmet is required in some jurisdictions and while I am unsure if Loudoun County is one of them thanks but we'll enjoy our bikes with them on!

As for dog bites I am not pointing fingers only pointing out that if a dog is off it's leash as my neighbors pit bull often is, it is illegal and could result in a tragic “accident” that could have been avoided!

So again please keep your dog on a leash and while you’re at it pick up the poop!

Spoken like someone with children in a child centric universe! Oh why won't someone PLEASE think of the children! We all were children once and we were not the brain dead idiots they are portrayed as now.

Granted a dog off the leash is negligence. But does that statistic say anything about leashes? NO! I know animals. Most animals will flee before they attack. Most animals only attack when: (1) they are sick (2) they are scared and (3) backed into a corner. Yes there are some breeds that are aggressive and will attack unprovoked but they were made that way by humans.

Again, I don't object to the leash complaint but this sensationalizing of every issue just because it may affect a child is ridiculous. First it's running in the street, now dogs. Next it will be the ABC store.

Aha BRIM! I just knew you were lurking somewhere ;)! Why can't you weigh in on the hospital where I really have no understanding of the issues and mire things up there a bit!!! That thread needs a little diversity.

I will not debate parenting technique with those without children. Suffice to say you all sure do make assumptions! The fact is I prefaced the statistic with what it was, something I heard on the Today show. I never claimed it was anything other than that. My reply was to BOOMER (and now BRIM), who I know for a fact do not have children. BOOMER stated dog bites are part of growing up, gosh I hope not. But since there seems to be an objection to my use of the word children I’ll replace it.

Therefore; I’ll agree many of those “people” bitten may have provoked it and perhaps it does occur more often with their own family dog. But if all dogs were leashed when they are supposed to be those dogs would have less of a chance of biting anyone while they where on their leash. Additionally if they where leashed we could identify their owners and follow them home and dump dog poop on their lawns!

P.S. Homer-I took my kids to the ABC last week. How did you know?:)

Good for you! I sincerely believe the problem with teen drinking is not the alcohol itself but the lack of awareness of alcohol itself. The Europeans don't have the problems we have with teens drinking themselves to death on their first party.

While I agree with you on the lessened probablity of attack a leash does not always help. For example the two pit bulls that ate the woman in San Fransico a few years back. They were on a leash w/ the owner attached. But there was 100% accountability for the death.

You have to be wary of any statistic you hear or read. Too often theses statistics are taken out of scope or spun to inflame passion or push an agenda. I would especially distrust any statistic heard on any major media outlet. News aint what it used to be!

I agree with Homer. Maybe in addition to handing out recycling bins and trash cans, the HOA should distribute plastic bubbles for the children of Broadlands to roam free in!:D
