Don't they cancel school on days when there's voting? I hadn't heard anything.

Schools will be open, they only close schools on normal election days, not for primaries or special elections.

Barbara is correct, go to your normal polling place within the 33rd district.

I'll be at Hillside, doing my Civic duty as a poll officer, I hope to see many of you there.

seems to me, there are quite a few "politically educated" individuals on this site. Can a couple of people provide the positive reasons to vote for Stanton, and for Herring. I have read a lot of negative stuff, but not much positive. Barbara, afgm, Lee, I kinda expect some responses from the 3 of you.

Charles ... where did you vote last time?? That's the normal location you vote at.

There are two polling places in Broadlands: Hillside Elementary, and Eagle Ridge Middle School.

If your voting location had changed, you would have received a new voter's registration card with that information.

If you haven't voted in a while, you may not be able to vote in this election.

If you're not sure where to vote, here's the Virginia State Board of Elections locator page:

    http://www.sbe.virginia.gov/cms/Voter_Information/Where_Do_I_Vote/Polling_Place_Lookup_request.asp

    Hope this helps.

If you want the positives on both sides, you could try www.herringforsenate.com and www.mickstaton.com. That's the campaign sites, so I'd bet it's all positive info for each candidate, respectively. I personally am voting for Mark Herring because of his proven support of education, his experience and proven record of smartly managed growth, and his support of Gov. Kaine's transportation plan. Also, I like the fact that he's lived in the county and seen it grow over the past 32 years, and that he has the experience of 44 years behind him.

Herring was also endorsed by The Washington Post and the Loudoun Easterner. I haven't seen any endorsements for Staton yet.

Frankly, I wish Minchew was still in the race. We would of had a substantive debate on issues. Extremely unfortunate for both Loudoun and the Republican party. I lobbied hard for Minchew and thought he had a good chance to take the race.

I've been listening closely to both camps. Most notable to me is the problem solving references. Staton is all about "holding the line against Democrats", "revenge for the lose of his father-in-law", "wants to go to Richmond to straightening that place out", "signed the no tax pledge".

From the Herring side, I hear, "work with all parties and work on solutions", "reaching across the aisle and understanding all sides of the issue", "working to reach consensus on real issues transportation, education and safety".

Staton seems to think he's at war with anyone who's a Democrat or someone who is not his type of Republican. Herring comes off as thinking everyone is a neighbor with a viewpoint. He may not agree with the view, but at least he'll respect it and work with it. This is one of many reasons why I think Staton learned and follows a lot of the tenets of the Black strategy.

I don't agree with everything Herring says, but I do think he'll work with others and try to figure out the mess our county is in. We need roads, tax control, education assistance, etc. To me, Herring has a better shot at bringing home results. Staton stands a good chance to end up like his father-in-law, ineffective, paralyzed due to inflexibility.

My other reason for supporting Herring is I think a Staton defeat is best for the Republican party. A Staton defeat will help kill off additional extreme politics offered to us by the Black/Staton/Delgaudio faction. If Staton wins, it will re-energize the BBers (Black Brigade) In fact, there are substancial (inside the Republican party) rumors that Staton would endorse Dick Black to take his seat on the Board of Supervisors. True or not, it is plausable.

AFGM, I'm glad you added the disclaimer that they weren't exact quotes. Where have you heard anyone in the Staton campaign say it is revenge? That is pure Blackout.

The biggest issue I see here is catch-up.

Obviously our growth has outstripped our infrastructure. To a certain degree that is normal: what business goes where there isn't a customer base to support it? Does it make sense to build roads to cornfields because houses might come some day? (although, this weekend I got to see where a lot of our road money goes--we went to farm country--real farm country--down near Port Republic to get a puppy. Another thread for having a new infant! We took the scenic route down: 29, 211, 81. 211 was an eye-opener. Miles and miles of beautiful spotless two lane, good shoulders, clear lines, not a pothole in sight. Not another car in sight either, for 15 or 20 minutes at a time.

When we got to Harrisonburg and headed southeast into the hinterlands, it was on a fine wide four lane road out of town. Not a car in sight. Turned off onto the road the farm was on, and expected gravel. Nope. Two lanes, pristine. Lines, shoulders. For two and a half miles past big legitimate farms. Not a car in sight!

The reason we are playing such catch-up is two fold: planned growth underwent a(n illegal) moratorium under the 99 Board. Ergo, by-right land rush went wild. And the same people who put that board in office lobbied the heck out of Richmond and the Fed to NOT build roads, because it would make growth come.

The missing piece is that when a smart growther tells you they are for transportation, they do not mean roads. They mean transit (with astronomical subsidies) and transit oriented development (fine if you have transit, but if you don't, what about that dense little vertical sprawl zone full of people with CARS?).

I have yet to meet a smart growther that wants roads--and the only improvement any ever seem to temporarily support is whatever isn't on the table at the moment.

The huge frantic push to elect Mr. Herring is because he is a Democrat who was available, and able to move. It must be "proven" (on a 30% turnout? a 20% a ...what%) that NVa is entirely Democrat...so the larger machine can work toward Warner in '08.

Staton gets to the meat of the matter, and is remarkably able at getting the truth on record. That doesn't mean the papers will print it--particularly the Post. Their obsession with Loudoun is ridiculous--we are only "news" in Paris and Rome because the horses of the globally wealthy live here, and need to be a short uncluttered drive from the Kennedy center. When one has thousands in pocket change to hand out in contributions, pols are only to willing to make us a test tube.

I think it is appalling that that is okay with some in power. And I think it is even more appalling that people with no better sense say things like "I want to be a buffer zone!" because they honestly bought last-house-on-the-block syndrome.

If Mr. Herring does win, I strongly suggest we start screaming loud and long "Show us the money!", but don't get your hopes up: We'll hear how rail is the real magic bullet, and we won't see the money anyway because the point is to feed the larger political machine in Va.

    Business as usual.

I don't think it means Staton will magically get our roads fixed, but it will be a better step toward it than a Democratic "proof" for the spin machine.

afgm well said, and I agree 100 percent. Further I am neither republican or democrat I used to lean republican but these days I lean more democrat. We need change in Loudoun. This article is in the Post today which is why it is even more important to get the right local elected leaders to crash this good old boy party in Richmond and stop the insanity.

    Barb,

The revenge reference is validated by the following quote from Staton's campaign manager. This was part of a secret mailer that went out to Staton supporters. I'll post it all here for context. But note the part about "...Mick is the son-in-law of Delegate Dick Black...now is your chance to fight back and defend our conservative values...you will be doing a great service to Delegate Black."

    "Dear ************

I wanted to take this time to introduce myself to you and let you know that our whole staff will be working very hard to make sure that Mick Staton will be our next 33rd District Senator. Mick is the son-in-law of Delegate Dick Black and he is a great guy who is a pro-life, pro-gun, and anti-tax candidate. Even though we lost a great conservative in this past election I want you to know that now is your chance to fight back and defend our conservative values. By helping Mick you will be doing a great service to Delegate Black. Please join me in helping to get Mick Staton elected to the 33rd District Senate Seat. If you would like to volunteer for the campaign please contact me at the information below. Thank you and I hope you have a Happy New Year!

    Barb,

You say, "Staton gets to the meat of the matter, and is remarkably able at getting the truth on record." You've got to be kidding. The red meat I read from him this weekend, via a mailer, was rancid.

I laughed when he says, "On the Board of Supervisors, Mick Staton, successfully spearheaded the largest tax rate decrease in County history". This is a verbatim quote from the mailer, I imagine others on the forum got the same piece.

This was his lead in on the mailer. What is he talking about, I certainly didn't get a tax decrease. But wait, read his statement closely, "largest tax rate"...oh he didn't lie. We did get a tax rate decrease, but our assessments went through the roof. He twisted the facts to portray truth, but he sure is misleading.

Funny, AFGM: I never got the top secret mailer. I must not have my tinfoil hat focused right. Maybe so. Good for you to admit that he said rate. Wish you could admit DPV altered copyrighted text for a Herring mailer.

When you have acheived whatever your mission is, do you think the professional Democratic pols you're working with at Blackout will somehow pay you back with whatever it is you (as a Republican?) want? I think it will be interesting to see what NVa gets if Mr. Herring wins. I bet it will be more than Mr. Warner's admin got for us--and it will all be rail that still won't be here for years, while the TODs roll on, and the Fairfax BoS tries to figure out how to legally fine Pulte in perpetuity if anyone in their proposed TOD ever drives a car.

Barb, all I want is good governance. Open debate with all parties. Joint solutions. As a Republican that is what I grew up expecting.

Is it achievable(?), I don't know, but I am positive it is (hopefully was) impossible with the likes of the BBers.

Wish you could admit, your opinion of BlackOut is based on a BBers view. You really don't understand it.

    Gator-

Number one reason to vote for Staton: He understands the transportation needs and will work to get real solutions. In his brief tenure on the Board of Supervisors, he's already working on improving Route 7 between Cascades and the Fairfax countyline, he's secured millions of road improvements to be completed by developers (i.e., not YOUR money, but the money of the new residents pay for these improvements), and is fighting to shorten the length of the process to get road projects underway (currently 4-5 years, and that's before construction).

Mr. Herring, on the other hand, voted AGAINST many developments during his 4 years on the Board- the result of which is countless "by-right" developments which don't have to build any infrastructure outside their property. End result- random developments with no roads connecting all of them. PLUS- you get major gaps in the transportation infrastructure.

In addition, Mr. Herring voted to reduce the capacity on Route 50, and, as Barbara mentioned- he's in the camp that believes it is not helpful to build more roads. The PEC, for instance, opposes any major new road construction out of fear of further development, despite the fact that the new road will help EXISTING residents. (Take the Greenway for instance- can you imagine Route 7 or Route 50 or Waxpool without the Greenway?)

So, all in all, Staton is for improving transportation, getting developers to build our roads, and not taxing us to death in the process. Finally, he's seen enough of VDOT to know that it needs a major overhaul, and he has the guts to take them on directly. Being on the Board he can wave little sticks at VDOT in an attempt for reform, but as a Senator- he could really spur some positive changes that get roads built quicker, cheaper, and more often.

    Hope this helps.

I did not know Staton got the greenway built????? [}:)]

Vdot overhaul started with our last governor who got it under control and a realistic budget.

What road improvement money did staton get us from these developers and what is being done with it??

We don't get enough road improvements or schools for the massive developments these builders want to build for the amount of people they will house. By right is fine with me until we get things under control.

It wasn't too bad here in Loudoun 10 years ago and look at it now what uncontroled and un-smart growth has given us. The real problems have only begun since then. Hmmmm the only major change since are roads getting much much worse taxes going through the roof and not enough money to keep schools up. And real income being eaten alive here as someone posted earlier today. Yep this smart growth really works things are sooooo much better around here!!!!!!! Notttttttttttt

It is time for real change in leadership and we will see that starting tomorrow with herring elected by a landside in republican country. That will be a wake up call for what most of us residents really want in Loudoun.

Here's a last minute note from Herring. I've not seen Mick's but if I do I will post it. If others have it post away.

    "VOTE TOMORROW!
    January 30, 2006
    Dear Friends,

Election Day is upon us and tomorrow, Tuesday January 31st, we have an opportunity to take our future into our own hands. This race is going to be won by turnout, so please remember to vote. Tonight talk to your family, friends and neighbors and remind them how important tomorrow's election is to the future of our area. Together, we can send Mark to Richmond and keep Virginia moving forward.

Mark has continued to cross the district and talk to the voters about the issues that face us everyday -- growth, transportation and education. Today, Mark received the endorsement of the Washington Post, stating that Mark is the "vastly superior candidate" to go to Richmond and work to tackle the issues.

This, combined with the endorsement from the Loudoun Easterner saying that "if voters remain concerned about transportation issues ... then the voters should choose Mark Herring" only proves that Mark is the right candidate.

We have an opportunity tomorrow, as a community, to make a statement and send someone to Richmond who is on our side. Someone who will reach across the aisle and work with all sides to tackle the issues that we know will make our lives just a little bit easier and allow us to spend more time off the roads and with our famlies.

Your normal polling locations will be open from 6 AM - 7 PM. Again, talk to your family, talk to your friends, talk to your neighbors and remind them how important it is to vote tomorrow.

For our famlies -- for our communites -- vote tomorrow and send Mark Herring to Richmond as our next State Senator

With your support, we know we can win this race.
    Thank you!

    Sincerely,

    Andrew Resnick
    Mark Herring for State Senate"

THIS JUST IN...reported by the reliable, Too Conservative, http://tooconservative.blogspot.com/

Tonight's Republican Committee meeting broke out into an all out verbal brawl. Even the cool handed Minchew couldn't control the likes of the BBers.

    Here's a few teasers:

"...a women then shouted and waved her fist "..and no gay marriage!""

"Eugene Delgaudio than got up...and didn't speak about his ideas, or platform. He simply said "if you want to send Tim Kaine packing, and see Poison resign that's right , I call him Poison...than vote for me""

Editorial note Eugene is attempting to gain control of the Republican committee by running for the Chairmanship of the 10th district.

As the meeting continued Minchew seemed to get things focused back on Staton and away from the lunatic.

"Staton finished with "these people (Democrats) are filled with a desire for power, they will say anything to get elected""

Folks for the good of Loudoun, for the future of the Republican party, PLEASE get out and vote, and put a stake in the heart of this junk.

Vote Herring, he's the best thing for Republicans and Democrats. As busy as things are please get out and vote, head out with the kids, leave work early, call a friend to go vote, do what you can. It really does make a difference.

Edit note: I just spoke with the author of Too Conservative. He was at the meeting, and he incorrectly identify the gay comment to Barbara Black. It was not Barbara Black it was another woman named Barbara.

I appologize to Barb Black for forwarding on an error.

Lee, you are all over the charts here. The Greenway is an unusual animal: opposed as opening up development, yet built by a major PEC donor. My take: since "roads cause development", build one behind the airport and dump it off at Leesburg. Slap a toll on it, and then make sure that all services go there. That keeps houses off the driveway to hunt country (rte 50). Sure worked, eh? (Didn't hurt that there was a proposal to build a racetrack near the end of it either--ah! the rural economy! Bring 'em in, shake 'em down, move 'em out!) Very funny when the 99 BoS passed Moorefield--hailed far and wide as "smart" growth, nevertheless the PEC sent three heavy hitters the night of the vote to say "By right would be a better interim land use." INTERIM? Amazing--build $800K homes and tear them down for the subway? Tells you when they expect it to come.

Now there are delayed services and a planned no-man's land on 50, higher tolls on the Greenway, and a ravening mob to depress any road service plus redevelop eastern Loudoun at urban density.

As I said, Mr. Herring is a Democrat who is available. The volume of expensive publicity says a great deal about how the gears fit together on this. If he wins, the VA Dem machine is moving in high gear to the White House, and to hell with our road fixes--since we all want whatever they tell us we do, right? (The Post is a big help on that--they interview more of their friends--who surely have NO personal stake in their own rural ambience in Unison et al.) If he loses, we lose Staton on the board, probably get a deadlocked board on all major issues (including possibly a replacement AFGM, so I don't know if you need to keep waving Mr. Black like a flag) and reenergize the moonbats who think life revolves around the fact that there should be no one on earth but them--see your own traffic threads for the mentality of just how important some people think they are.

Vote how you will, but be prepared to get nothing that you may have thought you voted for in November--for the "greater good", of course.

    Barbara Munsey, from South Riding.
